Patrick Watson is a writer, director, actor, television host, and interviewer. Both my parents were born and raised in Cuba and I am a first generation American. I remember growing up, my friends would come over my house and look in the pot of black beans cooking on the stove and say "ew[...] looks gross!!!" Who would have known that when I grew up, black beans would be "trendy". :o) Anyway, I've always said that my mother is the best cook in the entire world and it's always been a challenge to get her to pass down her recipes, because she never measures anything.Luckily, I stumbled across this book last week, purchased it and immediately went to my mother's house to get her "expert" opinion...are these recipes authentic? It was great to see the smile on my mom's face as she looked through the book. Not only did she give the thumbs up on the recipes, she loved the artwork. She said she usually uses more bell peppers than recommended in the book, because she thinks it gives more flavor and she said that sometimes she takes steps in a different order, but for the most part these recipes are just right! I can't tell you how happy this book has made me...knowing that I will be able to prepare the dishes I grew up with...it's really awesome!I made the glazed sweet potatoes today to go with our Thanksgiving dinner and they were extremely delicious. Thanks to the author for the wonderful recipes and the artist for the beautiful artwork. I can't wait to make everything in this book!

The book looked like it hadn't been used at all. It also arrived ahead of promised delivery date which was good since I wanted to do some holiday cooking using the recipes in the book.

This book was a gift for someone who recently visited Cuba, and I was told it took her right back there!

This is also a chance to bone up on our menu familiarity once we again get to visit. In the beginning of the book, Llamas explains some of the details of the Cuban Table. Next she identifies frequently used ingredients.Here's just a few of the dishes she tempts us with:* A couple of interesting and very simple soups: Avocado Soup made with chicken broth, mustard and lime juice. Her Green Plantain Soup similarly calls for beef broth, lime juice and cloves.* Jose's Ceviche uses king mackerel, onion, lime juice, olive oil and parsley.* Fish in Escabeche is olive oil, onion, garlic white wine, wine vinegar, spices and fresh tuna.* Glazed Sweet Potatoes is a combination of lime juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, butter and dry Cuban cooking wine.* Her Apple-Flavored Banana Ice Cream is a simple recipe calling for apple bananas, lime juice, 7-year-old rum, milk, sugar, light whipping cream and egg whites.* Black Boy in His Shirt is a rich cake made from cooking chocolate, butter, eggs, sugar, roasted peanuts and confectioners' sugar.A Taste of Cuba is a pretty little Cuban book, only 139 pages, but filled with the little country's unique appetizers, soups, main dishes, side dishes and sesserts. The drawings or illustrations of Cuban life in this book are beautifully depicted! They bring the recipes to life and put them in the social context of life in Cuba. I love looking at this book. The illustrations move the book from 4 stars to 5 stars.Roast Leg of Pork Creole Style and Cassava in Garlic Sauce are both very good.

We love this book! We have made 7 recipes out of this book in the last 3 weeks. Each one was fantastic! My husband's parents were born and raised in Cuba and he is first generation American. I am so happy to be able to make these recipes for him that he enjoyed growing up. We also love the illustations - so beautiful and makes you almost feel like you are in Cuba as you browse through the pages. Love it!

About the Author

Dr. R.O. Parker is currently director and journal editor for North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) and president of the National Agricultural Institute. He is a past director of AgrowKnowledge, the National Center for Agriscience and Technology Education, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. As a former division director at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI), Dr. Parker worked in agriculture, information technology, drafting, and electronics, and taught computer, agriculture, and writing classes. In 1992, he received an honorary state Future Farmers of America (FFA) degree from Idaho, and in 2005, he received an honorary American FFA degree at the 78th National FFA Convention. From 2005 to 2008 he served as a board member of The National Council for Agricultural Education (The Council), and he is the 2008 recipient of the NACTA Distinguished Educator Award and the 2010 recipient of the NACTA Murray Brown Leadership Award. Dr. Parker has authored several Cengage textbooks, including PLANT & SOIL SCIENCE, AQUACULTURE SCIENCE, INTRODUCTION TO PLANT SCIENCE, and INTRODUCTION TO FOOD SCIENCE & FOOD SYSTEMS, among other contributions). He earned his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in reproductive physiology from Iowa State University, and he completed post-doctoral work at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and the University of Wyoming, Laramie.

My daughter competes in knowledge-based equine competitions. Her 4-H equine IQ leader recommended this textbook for studying to her group. It is well-organized, providing great attention to details. For example, she likes the tables of information, such as types of poisonous plants or drugs used to treat internal parasites. At the end of every chapter, there is a review or summary page. Her favorite part is the Critical Thinking/Discussion section, where she has to apply what she has read in an essay type question. If you are interested in horse ownership, hippology (equine IQ), or equine veterinary science, then you will enjoy this book.

Usually when I rent textbooks I keep the packaging to send it back in and it always works fine. For this one in order to open it you had to toally pull a tab back and like splitting it apart making keeping packaging annoying and difficult. Textbook arrived in great condition though.

If you are looking to save some money and need the textbook for class, this will suffice. It is not printed in the United States and lacks the color photos. However, I brought it to my professor and they were surprised and said it would work for class.

We live on a ranch and I homeschool my two daughters (ages 14 & 16) who are excellent horse women. This text book is well written, contains great images and has excellent course work. Love that the information is in a format experienced and non-experienced horse lovers will appreciate. Also gives tons of education extension ideas and websites. Great textbook or horse book in general.

Probably the best book in my whole library on Horses!!!.....NOT good reference for doctoring horse problems, but GREAT book for farmers taking care of horses..... a great book....

This book is well-written, easily comprehendable, and organized well. It is great for high school age without being so complex that it would be better suited to college. It has lots of illustrations, tables and other information to make it easier to comprehend and more useful in everyday life.One reviewer I read lamented that there was no resource with Question Keys, Tests, and Test Keys. There is!! It is called Classmasters and is on CD Rom. My copy has not yet arrived, so I cannot vouch for it. I have only one small complaint: this is the third edition, and a couple times the questiions at the end of the chapter asked about subjects no longer found in the text. Otherwise, this is a great choice.

I bought this book for my 17 year old daughter to supplement her equine mentorship program for homeschooling. What an outstanding textbook. Very well organized and attractive photos. Can easily be used for about 8th grade through 12th grade. The only downside is that there are no answers to the questions at the end of the chapters and no teacher's guide. This is definitely a textbook format and we both love the book. I have been homeschooling for 16 years and this is one of the best I have seen in a long time. You won't be sorry you bought it.

Learned a lot from this book...never knew much about horses, but this book walks you thru without overwhelming you. Which is much appreciated when studying several subjects at once!!

Barry Goldwater was a politician who wrote a book called the conscience of a conservative. It proposed a number of positions which were popular in the extreme right wing of American Politics in the 60's. Barry stood against Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and was trounced.After that he continued to be a senator for many years. As he grew older his economic ideas remained unchanged but he never joined the rest of the right as it moved to be concerned with Abortion and civil decay as witnessed by the growing acceptance of homosexuality. Goldwater as a person seems to have been honest open and in his personal qualities admirable.The author of this book is a conservative. He believes that Goldwater was perhaps something that he was not. That is a casual factor in the shift to the right of American politics. A far more convincing argument for America's shift to the right is Lydon Johnon's civil rights legislation which changed the old south from a one party democratic province to a two party state. Added to this were the problems that Jimmy Carter had as a president.Goldwaters ideas for America in 1964 were just dumb. (Which is not to say that the man himself was dumb. The world is a complex place and to work out solutions to political problems is never easy) He supported the continuation of a policy of states rights. This policy meant in practice not using federal power to achieve integration. It is clear that Goldwater was not a racist and his commitment to this policy rested on his ideas of government rather than on the true place of Black Americans. His policy however would have delayed the end of segregation for ever. The Jim Crow political structures in the South disenfranchised those voters who would want change. Further he believed that American should fight a conventional war against Vietnam to end the Vietnam war. Further that bombing should be used against Hanoi and civilian infrastructure. Such a policy had the very real danger of involving China in the conflict. His political instinct also lacked sophistication. He was a person who had been elected in Arizona a small state. He had no real idea of the sorts of compromises that were needed to achieve higher office. Of course his refusal to compromise were part of his charm to his supporters.The book is interesting as it is about an interesting man. However the writing is so insular it is annoying. One can understand the author may not like the moderately left wing governments that had been in the 50's and 60's but to call them socialist or big spending lacks an understanding of what those terms mean. In Sweden the government controls some 65% of the GDP. The Labour Party of England in the 40's nationalized the steel industry the coal industry and all of public transport. The United States has never had a either a Labour or Socialist Party. Trade Unions were restricted in their activities to the 30's.

In 1962 I was a sophomore in high school. This was also the year I became aware of politics, economics, and social issues. I soon became an ardent supporter of Barry Goldwater, so much so that my nickname my last two years of high school was "Barry." When I went to college in the fall of 1964 less than two months before the Presidential elections, I quickly became radicalized. I abandoned my support for Goldwater and before long found Lyndon Johnson too conservative for my tastes. Through my college and grad school years I thought of myself as a member of the New Left. Shortly after I earned my graduate degree and began teaching philosophy at the college level I became disillusioned with politics in particular and the civil government in general and became a self-styled anarchist. Eventually I matured and when I did I found myself most comfortable on the far reaches of the political right. I had come full circle.Needless to say, I was happy when I received Lee Edward's "Goldwater" as a gift. I read it cover to cover and came to appreciate more than ever a man whom I had once idolized. Not only is this book of 470 pages of text a comprehensive study of his life, from his youth to his eighty-fifth year, but it thoroughly discusses his views (the basis for them, how they developed, how they changed) and as well as many elements of his personal life. Although it is clear that Edwards is fond of Goldwater, he doesn't idolize him. The blemishes in his personality, including the cantankerous side that increasingly manifested itself as he grew older, are in full view, as are, of course, those aspects of Goldwater that made him an endearing person to those closest to him.What comes across most clearly is that Goldwater was always an honest man, true to his convictions, someone who never let the potential for political gain get in the way of standing up for what he believed was right. This is shown by many of the positions he took, no more so than in his ardent opposition to the federal civil rights legislation of 1964, which in his case was driven not because of approval for segregation (something he abhorred), but by his sincere belief in states' rights. Although there were many factors working against Goldwater in the 1964 election, this opposition cost him dearly.During the years Goldwater was a public figure I did not always agree with his positions. But I always respected him, for I knew that what he espoused came from sincerely-held convictions.

A few things of interest I found in this book:* Edward's discussion of the Johnson campaign tactics and how Goldwater was smeared a racist for one vote though his body of work and speeches spoke the opposite.* How Conscience of a Conservative was co-written by Brent Bozell and became a surprise success.* The break-up of the Republican Party and what it was like before. I've had people tell me Roe Vs Wade destroyed the Republicans, but not according to this history. Let alone, it's interesting to read that the NY Times said the Republican Party was dead following Goldwater's defeat ... and then after Romney's defeat ... history repeats itself.* Edward's actually correcting what Goldwater wrote in his own autobiographies and pointing out how Goldwater would mess up dates and comment on stuff or change his opinions as he got older and did more writing. Obviously, one era is more well documented than the other.* It's interesting how Edwards paints Goldwater. He tries to make him very human, a bit stubborn, maybe even clueless at times, but sometimes he gets lost in his own story.Having read numerous Goldwater books, both pro and con, I would highly recommend this one. It's a long read but very detailed.

Very helpful. I did a 8-day backpacking trip in the Northern Winds in Aug 2017 and this book was very helpful for planning the trip. It's a bit bulky to carry on a multi-day trip so I photocopied the key pages. It is well written with interesting general background about the range, and it has very comprehensive coverage of the peaks. I am not a technical climber so can't comment on that aspect, although it has lots of route descriptions for technical routes. I'm a scrambler - fine on class III and ok with a bit of class IV - whose goal is to reach the high summits, and for this it is ideal. The descriptions of the trails, passes and summit routes were clear and (in my experience) accurate without being excessively detailed. It does not include topo maps (I used Larson/Earthwalk Press) but it does have trail maps of each area, which are helpful for getting an overview and planning approach routes. Similar in spirit to Secor's guide to the Sierras, but with nice color photos. Highly recommended.

I have used this guide book for the last 30 to 40 years. I lost my copy so this is why I purchased this one. I'm a 71 year old man and will no longer be climbing in the Wind's but will still backpack to the Cirque of the Towers this Summer and take in the scenery and do a little trout fishing. The book lets you fill in the adventure and do the discovering on your own. If you need to know every turn on every trail this guide book is not for you bot for the adventurer in you I highly advise it. TomP

In fall 1994, I flew from Cincinnati to Salt Lake City on one leg of a business trip return flight. The flight went farther north than expected, but toward the end it had to head SW toward Salt Lake. I had a window seat and realized I would be flying over the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming! I knew of them, but had never seen them before. I looked down and in a few minutes they appeared ... towering peaks, shining lakes, and glaciers. I knew then that I had to plan a backpack trip to them. Later, upon looking at maps, I realized I had flown right over the high peaks portion of the Wind Rivers ... Gannett Peak, Fremont Peak, Titcomb Basin ... followed by Fremont Lake at the base of the range.When I got home, I looked for Wind River guidebooks and Joe Kelsey's "Climbing and Hiking in the Wind River Mountains, 2nd Edition" was the best. I immediately purchased it and started planning. I made three separate backpack trips to the Wind River Mountains with the help of the book. I have been in areas from Titcomb Basin in the north to Cirque of the Towers in the south. I am a scrambler (nothing over Class 3), but for the hiking part and the scrambling part, the book was excellent.When I saw that this 3rd edition was available, I purchased copies for myself and friends and can see that it is still the same excellent (and expanded/improved) guidebook. It reminds me that I need to get back to the Wind River Mountains again. Besides all the information, the photos (many with climbing routes shown) are beautiful.One thing that Mr. Kelsey does well (that other guidebooks usually don't do) is have a subsection in each section that describes the mountain passes/cols and off-trail routes in sufficient detail, whether they are well known/designated passes or lesser known passes/cols and off-trail routes. I specifically benefited from his descriptions of Pass 11,120+ (Island Lake to Wall Lake; page 182 in the new 3rd edition), Monument Creek Route (Monument Creek to Pole Creek; page 208), and Pass 11,640+ (East Fork Valley to Bonneville Lake; page 257) ... I used all these passes/routes in my trips to the Wind Rivers and the descriptions (in the 2nd edition I used then ... and expanded in the new 3rd edition) saved valuable time/effort.I corresponded by letter with Mr. Kelsey in 1999 and I can see that he incorporates such discussion in future work. For example, on page 157 in the new 3rd edition, he expanded the Knapsack Col discussion, saying that one should bring along an ice ax for the Twins Glacier side of Knapsack Col (this was a subject in our 1999 correspondence).Anyone who loves backpacking and/or climbing has to experience the Wind River Mountains ... and they need the new 3rd edition of this guidebook.

Lots of good info if your planing a trip to the Winds

Excellent book, and definitive for this region. I'm especially pleased that the author was able to correct an error about a "Wolf's Head" climb that had slipped into the second edition.

This has great route information - very detailed. However, it really is more of a climbing/scrambling guide. If you really want hiking trail info, go with the falcon Wind Rivers hiking book.

Great, interesting read. A good addition to any book shelf. As Kelsey says in the intro, this book is NOT a detailed guidebook in terms of technical route descriptions. It is very vague when describing descent options, belay locations, routes or pretty much anything. For anyone considering going to the winds for the first time, this book is great to get a general layout of the area and an idea for a new adventure, but should not be relied upon if you don't know the area or have experience climbing/hiking there.I can see the appeal of keeping the ethics in the winds and the sense of adventure, but lots of confusing/conflicting/misleading and missing information in this book. Just a heads up.For the cirque, "cirque of the towers and deep lake" by Bechtel is a much better choice because it is more detailed and reliable.

We can't wait to find new hikes and enjoy the Wind River Mountains!

The book is entirely a representation of William Chen's "60 movement" Tai Chi form.The title was a bit misleading in that respect.With that being said, the book does cover the “60 movement” in great detail.The form is, in fact, covered in more detail than other books printed in this time period.The information on what I would consider ‘Body Mechanics’, breathing and weight distribution, alignment, were no more than 1, 2 or 3 pages on each subject, for a total of about 12 pages total. Other books have dedicated whole chapters on each subject.The other complaint I have on the book is the picture are black & white and very small with very little clarity (contrast).Sometimes there were as many as 7 pictures on an 8 x 4 page. The pictures would have to be at least twice as larger to be of much benefit.

I think the money would be better spent buying his "Tai Chi Chuan, Art of the 60 Movements Yang Style Short Form" book which has much more details on his style and forms.

I was really happy to find this book on Amazon. I studied Tai Chi Chuan at William Chen's school in Manhatten years ago. Balance is easier when we are younger and practicing Tai Chi helps to keep and restore balance of movement as we get older. It can be difficult to learn Tai Chi from a book or DVD so if you can, learn in person with a teacher.

First, I will say that in general I liked this book. It is a very good description of Master Chen's Tai Chi form... BUT, it is quite inaccurately titled. One would get the impression (as I did) that this would be an in-depth study of Tai Chi body mechanics.... it isn't. In fact there is almost nothing at all about body mechanics of any type.The text is entirely a representation of William Chen's "60 movement" Tai Chi form. There is information on breathing and weight distribution but NOTHING on body mechanics, alignments, or any of the other things I was expecting from such a title. A decent book for what it is, but it should be re-titled "William C. C. Chen's 60 Movement Tai Chi Form Instructions".

This book is an excellent reinforcement / supplement if you are taking Tai Chi Chaun classes and learning William Chen's "60 movement/posture" form. Highly recommend.

Not anything dynamic, William C.C. Chen is saying what most instructors are repeating in the realm of body mechanics. Nothing unique about this book.

Very clear description of the 60 moves of the short form. For me, this book has been more helpful than videos.

If you want to learn Tai Chi, it is best to start by taking a class. A good instructor will cover the basics and correct the mistakes that beginners make. Once you have a feel for Tai Chi, this book is a very helpful guide for refining your movements. It tells step by step how each movement is made. Even after several years after having taken classes and practicing daily, I still find myself referring back to the book.
