Lincoln: How Abraham Lincoln Ended Slavery in America: A Companion Book for Young Readers to the Steven Spielberg Film, by Harold Holzer

From Booklist

Lincoln-historian Holzer, one of several scholars who supplied input for the Spielberg film Lincoln, provides the official companion book for young readers. The focus, as in the film, is on the passing of the 13th Amendment to end slavery. However, Holzer’s straightforward account expands the narrative with information on Lincoln’s childhood, his evolving views on the Civil War and slavery, his governance of balancing popular opinion with what he believed to be right, his winning of a second term in office, and how that outcome was unclear right up until the counting of the votes. Although much of this will be known to readers, some of the finer points, as well as some fairly complex concepts, will be new territory. Approximately 30 historical images and photos are promised but were not available for review. A helpful cast of characters and chronology are included in the strong back matter. Grades 7-10. --Enos, Randall

Review

One of the leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln has written a companion book for Steven Spielberg’s newly released film on the 16th president. The book by New York historian and author Harold Holzer, titled “Lincoln: How Abraham Lincoln Ended Slavery in America,” is geared toward young readers. (Lisa Ko, author of The Leavers)The book is a delight, written for young people who may be discovering Lincoln and the Civil War for the first time. . . This may be the book that brings along a whole new generation of Lincoln fans. (Washington Post)An engrossing, well-rounded portrait of Lincoln as a humble, humorous, and passionate politician and humanitarian. (Publishers Weekly)Holzer highlights the emotional turmoil and the rocky political landscape Lincoln astutely navigated to ensure the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. (School Library Journal)LINCOLN invites young readers to explore Lincoln’s life and times. The book engagingly captures the trials and tribulations of the 16th president, making Lincoln come alive for a new generation. It serves as a worthy companion to a popular film. (J. Michael Martinez, Blue & Gray Magazine)

Lincoln: How Abraham Lincoln Ended Slavery in America by Harold Holzer"Lincoln: How Abraham Lincoln Ended Slavery in America" is the accessible companion piece to Steven Spielberg's excellent movie, "Lincoln". The book is intended for younger audiences but it was also enjoyed by this avid reader and reviewer. The book focuses on the evolution of Lincoln's views on slavery and how he was able to politically end slavery while preserving the Union. This well written 240-page book is composed of the following fourteen chapters: 1. The Making of a Liberator, 2. Romance, Law, and Politics, 3. The Lincolns Go to Washington Chapter, 4. The Prairies Are on Fire, 5. Right Makes Might, 6. The Mystic Chords of Memory, 7. A People's Conflict, 8. Fair Warning on Slavery, 9. The Day of Jubilee, 10. Fighting for Freedom, 11. Unfinished Work, 12. Year of Decision, 13. A Fitting and Necessary Conclusion, and 14. Death of a Liberator.Positives:1. Accessible and well written book about how President Lincoln ended slavery.2. Interesting topic in the hands of an accomplished historian. Even handed and professionally written book.3. The book is intended for young readers as a companion piece to Spielberg's "Lincoln". A great opportunity to teach our children an important chapter of our history while enjoying the book on its own merits. The distinct feature that makes this book appropriate for young readers is the author's graceful handling of slavery.4. The book shares many tidbits, personality traits and influences that had a lasting impression on Lincoln. "The horrific sight of human beings shackled together and sold as property may have changed Lincoln's life--and eventually the nation's life--forever".5. Lincoln's background and his political philosophy. "He supported road and canal projects that would link the state more closely and make it easier to ship goods from town to town. He favored a strong banking system that made certain that good supply".6. Lincoln's evolving views on slavery. "Slavery, Lincoln told one audience in a famous speech in Peoria that year, "is founded in the selfishness of man's nature--opposition to it is his love for justice."7. Political dynamics at work. The interactions and tug-a-wars between the separate powers. Lincoln's innate ability to handle conflicts in a pragmatic and focused manner.8. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of Lincoln. Lincoln had a way with words and most of his eloquence is here for all to enjoy. "If Kentucky left, the whole West might be lost to the Confederacy forever. "I would like to have God on my side," Lincoln is said to have joked at the time. "But I must have Kentucky."9. Understanding the political divide. Slaveholders versus the antislavery movement. The quest to keep the Union. "Secession would not be tolerated. The Union must remain intact. Lincoln was willing to make some concessions after all. He promised to enforce the much-hated Fugitive Savage Act, infuriating abolitionists. And he repeated his vow that he would not interfere with slavery where it already existed. But above all, he pleaded with the South to reconsider its rush to leave the Union".10. A succinct account of the civil war. The most important victories and defeats. The reason behind it all, "Some people still insist to this day that the war was all about state's rights. But this is hardly true. The war was caused by secession. And secession was caused by slavery. One issue alone ignited the rebellion: the question of whether the nation could indeed endure half slave and half free".11. The impact of slavery, the book's focus revolves around Lincoln's handling and resolution of it. "The proclamation unrolled before them made clear that the Southern states had failed to heed the president's "fair warning." Rebels would thus lose their slaves forever".12. The impact of the proclamation. "The Emancipation Proclamation effectively kept England out of the Civil War".13. The political process of achieving full freedom. The amendment. The cost of freedom "Freedom had already cost some six hundred thousand lives North and South".14. Lincoln's legacy.15. Linked worked great.16. Excellent Appendix that includes: Cast of Characters, Chronology and the most famous Proclamations and Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.Negatives:1. The book lacks depth which is expected from a companion piece to a movie. In summary, for a book intended for a younger audience I enjoyed this book. Author and historian Harold Holzer should be commended for achieving his goal of turning this book into the perfect reading companion to Spielberg's excellent movie, "Lincoln". It's accessible and covers the history of how Lincoln ended slavery intelligibly. If you are looking for the perfect book to give to a young reader regarding President Lincoln and slavery, you've found it. I highly recommend it!Further suggestions: Harold Holzer has written a number of great books on Lincoln, and of course "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" by Doris Kearns Goodwin from which the movie was based on.

This book was written to be a companion to the Steven Spielberg Film, Lincoln, currently in theaters. It focuses on the sixteenth president's tumultuous final months in office. Ending slavery was his primary focus. Even if you are not able to go see the movie, you have an abundance of historical detail right in this book.Be advised this is not a comprehensive biography of President Lincoln. It puts a microscope on his struggle to weigh his personal beliefs against presidential duties concerning the slavery issue. The Emancipation Proclamation issued two years earlier only authorized Union soldiers to liberate slaves in the south. A Constitutional amendment was needed to legally end slavery forever in the United States. The book tells us about America during those tumultuous times, Congress, and the people who fought or helped Lincoln.Although intended for young adult readers, the book is well suited for adults as well. Photographs spanning Lincoln's life, speeches, a chronology, and cast of characters are included. Another nice perk is the large type size. Here is an interesting aside. When Steven Spielberg, director of the movie, interviewed historical scholars prior to writing the screenplay, he took notes using an inkwell and fountain pens in order to place himself into that historical period. One wonders if he wrote the entire script in the same manner, with ink staining his fingers.Reviewed by Holly Weiss, author of Crestmont

I watched the movie, "Lincoln" and this book fills in the gaps from the movie. It is a really interesting read, and I really enjoyed the insights you get from the movie and book! Everyone should read this to understand why Lincoln is considered the best President ever.

Love Lincoln stories wherever they are written. This is digging in to the facts of the end of slavery. It is written for a middle school child. I will offer it to one i know when they are old enough.

I thought I knew a lot about Lincoln, but I learned so much more from this book. I wish I had it before seeing the movie. The book and the movie put emphasis on the 13th Amendment with the Emancipation Proclamation a document proclaiming what needed to happen; not an instrument that would end slavery.

I bought this book for my daughter she really likes it. It is an easy read.Came in a week. Highly recomended.

I saw Lincoln the movie, when I read that book it help me visualize more of what it was like for Lincoln.

My wife bought it after watching the movie. It is well written and has some history complimenting to the movie.

First, if you're a musician or singer, amateur or performer, stop here and order this book. You'll be amazed at how it enhances your approach to your art, no matter how accomplished you already are. But if you need convincing anyway, here's what I thought.Pedro de Alcantara is a cellist and teacher of the Alexander Technique, a method of achieving conscious control of the mind and body to regain the kind of natural coordination that many of us probably had only as kids. It's widely practiced particularly by actors, athletes, people wanting to overcome pain - and by musicians to help achieve a level of full, resonant and injury free playing. De Alcantara is also an original thinker and writer on all this (plus children's books!).I'm an adult violin student (with a life-long background in other instruments) taking Alexander Technique lessons to improve my approach to playing. My teacher gave me de Alcantara's previous book, Indirect Procedures, to help me developing my performance capabilities. Having benefitted greatly from that book's combination of the philosophical and the practical, I pre-ordered Integrated Practice and devoured it when it came.Integrated Practice is an application - and extension - of F.M. Alexander's thinking into the most fundamental notions of rhythm in practicing and performing music. The first section (half the book) is about reaching your own understanding of the internal rhythmic structure of the piece and communicating that to an audience. De Alcantara anchors the discussion in how humans relate to pulse, beat and rhythm in movement, language and poetry, and brings it into focus as the foundation for playing music. The second section explains key Alexander concepts and applies them to musical practice and performance. The third section develops the connection between the resonance of your instrument and rhythm. You do not sit down and read this book - you engage it. There's a level of energy emanating from the page that demands that you get up and do what de Alcantara requires of you to internalize rhythmic feeling, or organize your body better for playing your instrument or try out the practice routines he describes. He (and the Oxford University Press) provide a web site with over 100 video and audio clips demonstrating concepts and techniques described in the book. I'm constantly getting up to go to a certain clip, walk around in certain rhythm or try something out on my violin, inspired by the detailed thought he's put into making new patterns of playing music accessible and the clarity with which he presents it.On page 11, for example, he says, "Rhythm is coordination, and coordination is personality; ergo, rhythm is personality....[and, later]...Your musicianly duty is to think, breathe, and live rhythm all day long, developing your mastery of rhythm in speech, locomotion, song and dance, and in your every last gesture.... To start your work on rhythm, I propose that you walk in seven different ways."Then, drawing text and music from Shakespeare, Greek prosody, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, spoken English, haiku, Pound, Whitman, Shoenberg and others, he explains his view that rhythm is fundamental to existence and teaches how to become attuned to it (supported by video illustrations). In later sections, he goes on to improvisation, harmonics and other elements of becoming attuned to a piece of music at the most fundamental level, making the connection between the most abstract notions and putting them into practice.I kept feeling, "Wait, how is it that for $30 I get access to this kind of detailed tutorial based on all this original thought - and that, if I'm willing to do the work, will improve my playing right away?"Integrated Practice is the second in a series de Alcantara is calling "The Integrated Musician." I'd never heard the term before and many people may find it hard to grasp at first. But he has a way of discussing concepts at their most fundamental human level while anchoring them in the practical physical demands of making meaningful music. So a musician should just suspend disbelief with the confidence that you'll end up understanding what an "integrated musician" is.Anyone who wants to make music better tomorrow than yesterday will want this book.

Context: I'm a full time piano teacher and musician, so I DO think about practicing and how to make music, and I have dozens or hundreds of books on that topic....I've JUST started this book, but the crystal clear communication style and beautiful organization ... wow... I already know this is one of "those" books where I feel like the author is right there with me, telling me things I really need to know, with 100% credibility and authority and insight. I also feel like HE understands his points very well (with plenty of real world experience), so he is not speculating or guessing or wondering out loud....One way I know it's that kind of book is I find myself pencilling in a check mark or a star or an exclamation mark on almost every paragraph. It's a VERY WELL ORGANIZED book with superb presentation (including a thorough companion website with videos for many or most of the chapters). I have a great feeling about getting deep into this book. I certainly don't feel this way about every book! This is one of "those" treasures. Many thanks!

An insightful, artistic, and thoroughly enjoyable read for anyone studying the relation of body mechanics and motion to music.

All 5's

Clear and practical. Good supporting web videos to boot. This book was recommended reading by Meadow Mount Music School which is described as "... a talent hotbed..." in "The Talent Code."

Every musician should read this. Pedro guides us through our daily practice in a ver fun and effective way. I highly recommend it to everyone.

I've been unable to get into this book. Feels like a doctoral thesis rather than a practical read. There may be value in there, I just couldn't stick with it.

Works very well. Would be nice to have installation instructions included.

The Weather Detective, while at times interesting and informative, is not a book likely to change the way you view the natural world as The Hidden Life of Trees did for many of us. Less a book on weather and more on proper gardening practices in Western Europe, I couldn’t help but feeling slightly disappointed when I finished reading.Wohlleben does write with acuity about the need for human beings to reintegrate with the natural world and get out of the artificial technological ecosystems we spend so much of our life in. He provides many suggestions on how to read and interpret nature from southerly winds to different kinds of birds. But the presentation is more of various factoids than of synthesis. While the genius of the Hidden Life of Trees consisted of synthesizing and popularizing a wealth of scientific material and personal experience running counter to our common sense impressions, The Weather Detective has none of this structure. As mentioned, much of it just deals with organic gardening practices. This is great if you maintain a garden but obviously not as interesting if you do not.In short, though the book does contain a lot of wisdom on how to read and understand nature I wouldn’t recommend it unless you garden and are interested in a more scientific understanding of gardening. While not a waste of time for other readers, the book is too unstructured—and doesn’t even have the same elan—to compare favorably with Wohlleben’s earlier mini-classic.

It is a very interesting book, sometimes not comparable to "The Hidden Life of Trees" and "The Inner Life of Animals", but it carries its 'message' and is a worth 'follow-up' of the other two books by Peter Wohlleben.

This just wasn't the book in thought it was. I expected a field guide of sorts that would explain how to read my surroundings for clues as to how the weather would change but this was more anecdotal. What tips were in there didn't have much explanation and often felt tossed in.

Perfect

Wonderful book, perfect gift

How many of us discover the weather from the screen of our cell phone, or television. Wohllbean challenges us to look out the window. This is excellent advice. If you’re a gardener or farmer, you know that the weather five miles from where you are can be rain while you’re having sun. I have friends in Florida who live in an area they call the desert because they get so little rain while those of us ten miles away have a relatively good amount. The only problem with Wohllbean’s discussion of the weather is that in he discusses European weather rather than what we experience in the US. However, what he says about where weather comes from can be translated usefully to the US. The book also has interesting information about pests in the garden and discusses aspects of the weather. I found the formation of hail particularly interesting.Wolhllbean talks about sensitizing us to how what we do affects the environment. Most of us wouldn’t think about it, but painting your garden furniture with wood preservative means the stain will wash away if the furniture is left our during the year allowing the chemicals to seep into the soil. Chemicals in the soil will affect insects and worms some of which you want to foster in your garden. A better idea is to use natural pigments or more durable wood.If you are a gardener, this is a good book. You may know or practice many of Wohllbean’s recommendations, but I’m sure you’ll find new interesting ideas.I received this book from Dutton for this review.

'The Weather Detective' by Peter Wohlleben with English translation by Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp is the third book by the author. It's also continuing in the vein of his other works. In this work, the author seems to want us to slow down a bit and look and listen around us. The weather can be seen in the signs in our gardens, and how the critters who inhabit our yards are acting. How plants can survive in global warming, how much water is enough for plants, and what creatures we should allow in our yards are also discussed. The cycle of seasons, and the moon, and a typical day are opined on.It's a short work, and only the first third is about the weather. I was hoping there might be a bit more content on the subject, but I still found myself liking the work. It's a book to read and relax with. A book to read outside as you listen to the wind and the birds.I received a review copy of this book from Dutton-Penguin Random House in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this book.

As noted by at least one other reviewer, this book is really concerned with gardening tips for those living in Germany and has very little to do with weather as such. And while there are little caches of interesting information here and there, it is for the most part written in a way that it's perhaps more appropriate as a children's book: I don't really need to have someone explain to me why there are seasons, for example. I've not read the author's Hidden Life of Trees, but just by glancing through it, I believe I can tell that it's goingto a far better and engrossing read. If you get this one, however, give it to your third-grade daughter or son for their birthday.

Anatomy Lessons From the Great Masters, by Robert Beverly Hale Terence Coyle

Amazon.com Review

Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters provides an anatomical counterpart to Robert Beverly Hale's classic reference book, Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters. Terence Coyle, who for several years assisted Hale at the Art Students League of New York, kept detailed notes of Hale's lectures and teaching methods. He combined these notes with 100 drawings to illustrate how the great masters portrayed specific parts of the human physique. As Hale points out, master artists such as Rembrandt, Leonardo, and Raphael "absorbed the technical details of anatomy so well that these details could be set down instinctively.... If an artist has to occupy his mind with the task of clumsily grouping the elemental facts of anatomy as he draws, there can be little room left for really important matters--such as the spirit of the drawing and the artist's expressive intent." Coyle provides several examples within the study of each anatomical area to illustrate the variety of styles and methods employed by the masters. The book treats, in order, the rib cage, the pelvis and thigh, the knee and lower leg, the foot, the shoulder girdle, the arm, the hand, and the neck and head. A complete series of anatomical reference plates by Dr. Paul Richer is included. By applying the timeless anatomical principles the great masters have handed down to us, any artist can begin to acquire the means by which to express the "really important matters." --Mary Ribesky

From Library Journal

It's rare to find good, comprehensive books on drawing the anatomy. Each of these the first, the return of a classic; the second, a focused study; and the third, lessons from the masters deserves a place on library shelves. Bridgman was a legendary teacher at New York's Art Students' League. There, he originated a system of drawing known as "constructive anatomy." In 1952, his seven books on anatomy were gathered into one volume, which became a standard work at art schools and universities. Published now for the first time in paperback, it holds up as an indispensable volume, with more than 200 illustrations of hands and hundreds of images of arms, shoulders, heads, torsos, legs, knees, and feet. Fairley's book concentrates on those troublesome extremities hands and feet. Sketchbook exercises are followed by eight detailed painting demonstrations in watercolor, oil, and other media. Fairley then continues on to portraits in which variations in age, skin tone, composition, mood, and movement are integrated. Advanced students will find Hale and Coyle's Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters a rich source of inspiration. Hale, like Bridgman, was one of the great teachers at the Art Students' League. His student, Coyle, gathered together Hale's famous lectures to produce this compendium. Hale drew on principles found in 100 masterpieces by such artists as Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rubens, Raphael, D?rer, Titian, and Rembrandt. In 1995, Giovanni Civardi's trilogy Drawing Human Anatomy (Sterling, 1995), Drawing the Female Nude (Sterling, 1995), and Drawing the Male Nude (LJ 3/15/96. o.p.) reached a high standard for good, basic books in this genre. These three surpass Civardi's works and are highly recommended for serious artists and comprehensive library collections. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Recommended by figure drawing instructor at local college. I have to agree it looks like it will be extremely helpful in improving my drawings.

I had to purchase this book for an anatomy class in art school and I definitely like it better than other "strait" artistic anatomy books. It shows amazing artwork from historical art masters, with accompanying "traces" of key areas, pointing out the muscle groups they show, giving you a perfect example of how to apply anatomical knowledge in art. Plus it has all the standard anatomical charts as well. Really great book. Even if it's not required reading I would highly recommend it if you want to improve your artistic anatomy.

As an artist, I tend to study anatomy. This book is a good one.

Anatomy Lessons From The Great Masters is the sequel, sort of, to Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters (Practical Art Books). Again, 100 pieces of drawings from great masters are selected for analysing.Compared to Drawing Lesson, this book is much more straightforward. The book is really like an anatomy reference which points you the parts of the body to look for. This pointing and labeling of parts isn't really called analyzing. It lacks the insight that goes into the creative process of these art masters. By comparison Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters really explores the thought process that goes into creating art. While there are the usual anatomical reference drawings at the back, showing the bones and muscles from from and back views, it's not as comprehensive as other anatomy reference books. The good thing about this book is of course the figure drawings. Most of them are sketches. It's really inspirational to look at the drawings created around the 15 century by artists like Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rubens, Raphael, and other masters. This book is not really an essential buy unless you're buying for the drawings.I prefer Joseph Sheppard's Drawing the Living Figure which features a similar teaching style and has beautiful life drawings.(More pictures are available on my blog. Great book for drawing!

I got this book first from the public library and it was so good I decided to order it. I was happy with the price too. The book has great samples of human figure by the masters. I haven't read much of the explanations on the anatomy but I have agood background on human anatomy from science classes I took. I drew a few samples already and it helps me a lot when I do my own drawings from life.

One of my best drawing books of the human anatomy from the Masters!

The imagery in this book is excellent. One does not have to travel to all the museums that contain the artwork in order to appreciate the work of the Renaissance. There is detailed bone structures and profiles as well as musculature in the appendix of the book. The book is not as detailed in anatomical references as the work of Raynes, but it is definitely a better one than "Human Anatomy ... Elements of Form" book that I returned. The book is much more affordable for those who want to be frugal with their purchases.
