Review

"[C]overs everything that students and industry professionals need to know about maritime logistics." (Jason McDowell Inbound Logistics)"International trade is growing faster than the global economy - and most trade continues to be seaborne.  Orders may be placed electronically, but the actual movement of the goods still requires ports and ships.  Maritime logistics is thus evermore important for any country's development.  Understanding contemporary shipping and port management is vital for businesses and policy-makers in leading their companies and countries.  Written and edited by some of the world's most renowned maritime economists, this new edition of Maritime Logistics is both timely and important." (Jan Hoffman President, International Association of Maritime Economists)"It is only occasionally that a book of this quality becomes available.  Essential reading for all those with an interest in logistics.  Comprehensive, up to date and perceptive." (Professor Michael Roe Chair in Maritime&Logistics Policy, Plymouth Business School)"[A] timely, informative and authoritative look at the global maritime logistics industry, helping explain its history, considering its present-day challenges and operations and casts an eye forward to its future." (Darren Ingram Darren Ingram Media)"A real tour de force in its comprehensive coverage of the shipping and port industries." (Kevin Cullinane Professor of Logistis&Transport Economics, University of Gothenburg)

as usual its a CILT book by the famous leading publisher in Logistics and transportation Kogan Page!!!!!!

Excellent

I loved it! And I received it on time!!

A rather amazing book that sadly won’t get the attention it thoroughly deserves. This hefty tome provides a timely, informative and authoritative look at the global maritime logistics industry, helping explain its history, considering its present-day challenges and operations and casts an eye forward to its future. It is clearly aimed at the academic or industry participant and for its target audience it has scored a bulls-eye. Yet for the more interested generalist it still offers a lot, although you can understand they are less likely to stumble across it, if nothing else because of its price. It is a bit of an expensive casual read, but still a great bargain if you have a need for it as you will get your money’s worth. This is a revised (second) edition, a worthy upgrade if you will, with new chapters on port-centric logistics in concept and practice, hinterland logistics and global supply chains, maritime transport and logistics as a trade facilitator, and future trends and developments. Don’t worry if you feel that you are treading in deep water, as the book’s team of international experts who act as contributing authors manage to find a level, aided in no small part by its editors, or collective voice that can appeal to audiences of all levels and experiences. This reviewer is no stranger to the world of international logistics and freight shipping, albeit mostly as a passive participant and occasional importer, yet this book managed to throw a lot of “I didn’t know that” or “I had never thought of that”-type reactions in to the reading mix. A lot of the book’s detail went clearly over this reviewer’s head, yet it didn’t feel as if things were being wasted either, and surprisingly rather a lot of things stuck in the mind. Anyone who works actively with logistics could stand to gain a fair bit of background knowledge and actionable industry information from this book. Students and other academics have access to a gold mine. For example, it is not necessarily a given that an importer should have the exporting party arrange the freight booking. There can be often advantages in the booking, seemingly a trivial detail, being handled by the importer. Three sentences in the book, hidden in plain sight, could easily see the book pay for itself within one purchase if that situation becomes actual: “These surcharges can easily raise the total transport bill by 50 per cent or more, and they make the transport cost for ocean shipping complex and difficult to interpret. The chosen Incoterms determine which party books ocean transport. This can also have an effect on the height of certain charges…” Blink and you miss them at your peril!Or what about one sentence, drawing on academic research, that suggests even the method of freight handling and its routing can be a bigger deal than you might exist: “… estimate the impact of time delays on trade, and find that each day's delay reduces the probability of trade by 1–1.5 per cent. Time delay really is a trade barrier, and ocean shipping, which causes structural delays, can be seen as the cause of this.”If I am an exporter, maybe it becomes in my interest to start to look at different ports, for example, as the larger port might not necessarily be the cheapest or the most expedient to handle my freight: delays that annoy my customers might start to have an impact on my bottom line. Maybe I can save my customer money as well by suggesting they book their freight. Little things have a lot of possible impact. The bottom line: if you are professionally involved with maritime logistics, however tangentially, or need to study this area, buy this book. If you are curious and open to new knowledge within the “non-fiction” genre, try to get this book – even if you have to borrow it from a library. Strangely enough, when this reviewer first saw the book’s title and speed-read the marketing blurb, one was expecting an entirely different book. First impressions can thankfully be deceptive!

Ridiculous amount of repetition. Practically all of the sections in the chapters repeated themselves. And the authors waste so much space in the "introduction" section of each chapter - where they take a page to tell you what they're going to repeat in the chapters. I hated reading this thing

I'm a sucker for a Cinderella story, so I was excited to read this story. The story line was of course, predictable in it's more basic elements, yet it was unpredictable in so many ways. I was kept guessing throughout the book, wondering what direction the story was going to take. The dialogue was believable. Along with the complexity of the characters, this story truly came to life. I enjoyed the connection to another of her books, but it's still completely stand alone if you haven't read the other books in this series. It made for the perfect Christmas break reading.

I enjoyed the book even though it is a Cinderella formula as it had a fresh twist. I am not a fan of Cinderella and It took me a few cahpters to get into the book. On reading further the characters developed more depth especially Cynder Glass, the secondary characters were interesting . The "prince " a self made billionaire certainly was differnt from the normal hero . I have a feeling there is definitely a continuation book as the Epilogue could have been more conclusive that is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. On reading the authors notesat the end of the book I got the impression that sometime in the future there will be a book written about Cynder's best friend Lucy and Xander's assistant Wyatt.

The Billionaire's Masquerade Ball features Cynder Glass, her step mother, 2 step sisters and step brother. Add a billionaire rather than a prince. Cynder is still grieving her father's death as she watches her step mother tear apart the event planning agency Cynder built with her father. This is an interesting story where the two main characters refuse to tell each other their true feelings. It is a well written, clean romance that captivated me from the first page.

For those who haven't read any books by Emma St. Clair, Ms. St. Clair writes 'clean' and inspirational romances. Her books aren't just romances, but a whole lot more. The Billionaire's Masked Ball [The Billionaire Surprise Book 4] is her newest book and one of her best. The book is a modern take on a well know story- Cinderella. The story and character were very believable. The story moved quickly and caught my interest from the first page. The main characters had a few problems but it all works out in the end [and the mean stepmother and her children get what they deserve.] I think that anyone who reads romance will really enjoy The Billionaire's Masked Ball. Good Job Emma!!

This was a very good book. Emma is a good author. I have read several of her books and enjoyed every one of them!

Cynder had been in a partnership with her father before he married and then died. She went from being a partner to a coffee fetcher. Then she snuck into a gala that her family was putting on for a billionaire who had started a charity. In trying to get away from her slimy step-brother, she ended up in the billionaire’s arms. And then things got complicated. Delightful read and I couldn’t put it down.

What a sweet love story. Definitely the modern day cinderella story but one that kept me interested and thinking about it when I was away from it. There is a good balance of love and suspense threaded throughout. There is a fun side romance that begins to blossom as well as a good "you got what you had coming" scenario. Emma's stories are always multifaceted and never run flat. Grab this one and start reading today!

I loved this sorry and could not out it down, even though at first I was a little put off by the obvious connection to Cinderella. But I was quickly pulled into the modern day take and the interesting twists. Well told!

As an avid reader of Time Management books, and an all-time Brian Tracy fan[atic] ;) I bought this book actually as a recommendation from Brian, as one of his subscribers to his YouTube Channel. I own 80% of all his books so I guess I'm just spoiled with his way of explaining matters.I just wasn't that impressed with this book in particular. One of the few points that seemed to be the best, "choicest morsels", are found on pages 43 and 146, which all of us can appreciate...Page 43 reads, "Establish daily routines for common work tasks, such as checking e-mail or organizing your day. This allows you to make fewer decisions, reducing your energy expenditure."and..Page 146, "When you have no choice to overwork yourself, try to do so in short bursts separated by longer periods of normal work - or rest... Otherwise your productivity will diminish sharply."The forward is excellent and the story behind the book is compelling, but what didn't impress me is the fact that it's too conceptual in nature and doesn't deliver much in the way of a thinking process, behind the actual practice of time management. The one factor that would have impressed me most, is if the book held to the (1) theme and (2) promise of linking back to 'increased results and saving 90 minuted per day.'These two points were found maybe a few times over the course of 166 pages.Maybe I just need to go back and re-read the book one more time, drawing out some of the more finer points I may have missed."Time Power" by Brian Tracy and "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" is more of my cup of tea, and highly recommended for any who have made it this far, reading my long winded review of Laura Stack's explanation of time management and productivity.

I thought this book was well-researched and well-argued, and there are some great concrete tips, especially about managing the inflow of documents and email. It will probably change the way I triage email, at least a bit.I also agree that the principal of doing one thing at a time and doing it well is something we could all stand to do better. Multitasking is not the greatest productivity aide ever. Rather the opposite. This part was written especially for me and my email process:"Indecision. We don't determine whether tasks are in or out or even relevant or not, so we leave them on our lists, which causes us to have to repeat the evaluation process again-- putting them back into our `decide later' consciousness, lengthening our to-do lists, filling our inboxes, and expanding our perceptions of how much we have to do."Also, I actually did this with my boss, and it was enlightening:"If you made a list of the top ten things you believe you're responsible for, and then asked your manager to do the same, and compared the two lists, would they be the same? If not, you have a problem, because you aren't spending your time in ways that are valuable to your best customer."HOWEVER. I thought it was catastrophically judgy about attention span. Stack assumes that people can just bear down and work, and that this is a matter of willpower. Those of us on the ADD spectrum, who get in a guilt loop about trouble Just Focusing, are ill-served by this attitude. On the bright side, I had one datapoint confirming my theory that I would be made less irritated by a productivity book written by a woman than the ones written by men.Read if: You are looking to become an Outlook ninja. You like the idea of recapturing time leaks.Skip if: You can't deal with "just focus" advice. You are not working a desk/computer job. Also read: Watership Down, my favorite book on leadership.

The book offers some good tips, but feels generic. Lots of the tips here I've seen otherwise. The process is very similar to the David Allen's Getting Things Done methodology. She even references the "Tickler File" that I've only ever seen in David Allen's book. At no point in the book, however, did she mention David or the GTD methodology. Considering that GTD came out in 2001, and this book in 2010, it appears that her 6D's methodology a copy of GTD. There is one improvement though, calling the "waiting" or "pending" file as a "date" file, so you get to that file when a date has reached. She often talks about using MS Outlook for organising To Do's and email, which is fine if you use that, but I've turned my back on Outlook a long time ago, and have never looked back. The last chapter touched on lots of other tips such as exercise and sleep, but stops short of saying why.On the whole, it was okay. It's a good primer if you are now getting into productivity. If you've never heard of GTD or David Allen you would definitely get more value from this book than I did.

I like the book and have ordered more for my team !

At my age, I really have "heard it all before," but we all can use the reminders. I used to teach this stuff myself, but I found this book to be a simple read, a good reminder to help get me back-on-track, and an easy one to share with the "young bucks"--who just do not have the self-discipline and organization with which my generation grew up.

It’s really the same old common sense stuff you probably read in other books or blog posts...

Helpful to focus. Parts feel impracticable

An interesting little tome that can be reserved for easy reading next to a place where your not doing anything.
