I bought Gunsmithing the AR-15, The Bench Manual by Patrick Sweeney on Amazon. It arrived in a timely manner with no damage. I have volumes 1-4 of The AR-15 and volumes 1 and 2 of Gunsmithing the AR-15 by Patrick Sweeney. This is by far the best of them all. It is listed as a companion volume to Gunsmithing the AR-15 Volumes 1 and 2 but if you don't already have them you don't need them. This book contains more information and in much greater detail than the others. I have always wondered why they never published book like this one with so many people building ARs from parts. This book covers building a custom AR-15 from parts using and comparing some of the most popular brand components side by side. There are step-by-step instructions on replacing and upgrading every single part on the AR-15. He goes into detail about each part and explains not just how, but why. It is well written, easy to understand with a sense of humor.

Uneven editing impairs an otherwise excellent review of the subject by the acknowledged best writer on the subject. Even with flaws, this guide is worth having at the ready when casting a beady eye on our AR, multipurpose wrench in hand....

Much better than I thought it was going to be. I love the author's sarcasm and the insights he provides into the reasons for doing certain things rather than just telling you what to do. This is not a step by step builders book but, gives you better information that will aid in parts selection. If you want a builders guide, just go to Brownells.com and watch the videos.

Good info, interesting reading. New owner to one of these carbines with mechanical background. With this and with Sweeney's Gunsmithing... Vol 2 book lets owners know what can be done to improve their's or consider assembling parts to build one.

Very detailed and informative. This book is a must if you are a first time AR builder or even considering upgrading specific parts, as it tells you what other small and commonly overlooked items you should also take a look at.

Patrick Sweeney writes the easiest to read books on the AR-15 platform. This book is no exception and it answered many of my questions concerning gunsmithing the AR-15. I am most pleased and look forward to more books from Mr. Sweeney.

Wanted a volume that would be useful for someone unfamiliar with details of the rifle. Very informative with respect to building and maintaining and provides some great information on best tools for certain tasks and an assortment of things to watch out for (or at least be aware of) when building an AR from scratch.

Sweeney is THE go to guy on the AR - If you own an AR you should have all three of his books on them. This one is for more advanced stuff.The three books take all the mystery out of the platform and are GREAT for troubleshooting and improving your rifle!

About the Author

John R. (Jack) Deller, Jr. is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State University where he directs the Speech Processing Laboratory. He received the 1998 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award and the 1997 IEEE Signal Processing Society Meritorious Service Award for his six-year service as editor in chief of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. Dr. Deller is the coauthor of Digital Signal Processing and the Microcontroller (Prentice Hall, 1999) and currently serves as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. John H. L. Hansen is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; he holds appointments in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Hansen serves as associate director for the Center for Spoken Language Understanding (CSLU) and director of research activities of the Robust Speech Processing Laboratory at CSLU. He has served as technical advisor to the U.S. delegate for NATO, and he is associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing and of the IEEE Signal Processing Letters. This book is very thorough, but at times it seems like the authors go out of their way to keep their discussion on a very theoretical level.Chapter 1: A highly theoretical review of DSP. You need good knowledge of DSP to understand it.Chapter 2: Goes over the human speech production and recognition systems. Here you get some practical info on the spectral and time-domain properties that distinguish speech sounds.Chapter 3: Describes a model of the speech production based on a series of pulses passed through filters that correspond to features of the human speech production system. Practical issues such as which zero and pole values work best are left as an exercise to the reader.Chapter 4: A lot of mathematics relating long-term statistical properties to those of a short frame of speech data. Contains good info on how to find recursive formulas for statistical properties of speech frames. It is a great shame that the authors don't include examples in MATLAB or pseudo code.Chapter 5: Linear Prediction. Discusses a mathematical algorithm for creating a prediction filter that could be used to predict the next value in a series of data. In speech processing we are interested in using the coefficients of this prediction filter to encapsulate the properties of a speech frame. Examples of 1st,, 2nd, and 3rd order filters would have gone along way to illustrate how to implement this. There are some good formulas to measure the degree of similarities between speech frames based on their LP filter coefficients.Chapter 6: Introduces the concept of the cepstrum. Cepstral analysis allows you to de-convolve speech data to separate the excitation source from the vocal tract filter. That way you can lifter out (a play on filter out) the excitation (responsible for pitch) and focus only on the vowel sounds. As always, how to make it work is left as an exercise.The rest of the book is about speech coding and speech recognition. My class did not cover the later chapters, so I only read the parts that applied to projects.The book helped me understand speech processing journal articles which tend to assume a lot of background knowledge.The theoretical background that this book provides is necessary; good engineers need to understand the underpinnings of their bag of tricks. It is painful, however, at times. To apply the information in this book, you will certainly need a good mentor and a lot of tinkering in MATLAB.

Very thorough book about speech recognition. I should say this book is not quite for novices in this particular field. One should know at least basics of digital signal processing and for that refer to Proakis, Manolakis - Digital Signal Processing. Of course, your mileage may vary.However, there is absence of implementation of real world situations, whether it would be in Matlab, Python etc.

The book is probably the best reference on the field. The authors take their utmost effort to explain even some of the most subtle details but in a unified theoretical fashion. Must buy for anyone interested in the Speech processing Area

I've seen a lot of books on Speech processing, but this one's the best by quite some margin. Rabiner & Schafer's classic could've edged this one out, but it's slightly dated now(1978 was a long time ago!) - it remains a great source for the fundamentals, though. However, this book is uptodate, as well as quite exhaustive in its coverage of the basics. One can get a solid grasp of basic speech processing(eg pitch analysis), synthesis, compression and recognition. The chapters on recognition, especially, are quite impressive,with detailed treatment of all the standard techniques in the field,including Dynamic time warping,Hidden Markov models & Neural networks. Everything from isolated word recognition to large vocabulary continuous speech recognition is touched upon.This book is an ideal starting point for exploring the world of speech processing,which is a very rich area of research and has virtually limitless commercial applications,too.A word of caution though - this is not for the layman.One requires a bit of a background in mathematics,and a little knowledge of digital signal processing won't hurt either.I have only nice things to say about this book.The only possible crib could be the hefty price tag,but then this is typical of books in this field.All in all,it's an excellent textbook,which ought to be read by everyone working in speech processing.

This book covers many aspects of speech signal processing. In doing so, it is a great conceptual primer, but people with specific interests in one aspect or other of speech signal processing may look into other books. I have found it very valuable in clarifying certain concepts and an essential reference for my thesis. Some readers may find this book frustrating in some aspects because they are not familiar with the background of certain topics. It is often best to reread the conceptual portion of those chapters and look for other resources that explain the details of those topics in a more tangible language.

I was skeptical when I started on this book. But this book changed the way I looked a speech processing for ever. Wonderful classic on Speech Processing. I spent many moments with this book and came out with awe and respect for the authors. It is broad in its scope. Thanks IEEE for reissuing this classic.A good book should make you think loud. This one does that job splendidly well.

I want to thank Max Brallier, for writing this amazing book. I was having the hardest time getting my 11 year old son to read, he got this book 2 days ago and he was finish last night. He was so excited talking about this book, it filled my heart with so much joy because I never saw him excited about a book. He is so disappointed that he has to wait until August for the next installment. Again thank you Mr. Brallier

As bought as my review will sound, it's genuine. My son is a pretty common 12yo boy. He's always on the move, getting dirty and paying war with any action figure he can find when he is not playing video games. He can't get enough minecraft for example.I have my done this book as a birthday gift this past November and he finished it in a few weeks. The first time I've gotten him to read a book without it seemingly come across as punishment. He loved it and can express what was going on in the book with excitement and mystery in his voice. It's been a pleasure. Thank you Max Brallier

What I thought would be an adventure book for my son, has turned into a love of the zombie world. With so many books and TV shows with zombies this was easy for him to get into. The kids in the book are smart and show a lot of bravery. There is a real super villain in the series, but most of the story is about the kids learning how to get along and survive the zombies. The book is very imaginative and has us wanting to read the next installment. Don't let the title worry you.

My son is in 4th grade and he is just starting to enjoy reading. As a child who has suffered from dyslexia, reading was something he avoided at all times. Recently he's been obsessed with zombies, so when I saw an ad for this book... I "1 clicked" it. He started the book a few times and kept putting it down, he want a fan of the beginning. But once he got beyond that and into the meat of the book, he was hooked. He read 75% of he book in one evening when he usually can only read about 50 pages in that time frame. He gave it 5 stars and said that 95% of the book is WAY better than Diary of the Wimpy Kids books. I will purchase the next one for him.

My 9yo hates having to read 20min for school every night. Whatever popular books we get from the library, he only reads 1-2 chapters max and moves on to the next. The only book he's ever read the whole way through was Captain Underpants. Until now. I got this one for his birthday, praying it might be "the one." At first, he had no interest in getting a book. The next day, I pick him up from school and he says, "Oh, you know that book you got me? Awesome!" He actually brought to school to read during quiet time, and he turned off the TV on his own at night to read for double his allotted time. I heard him chuckle a few times, too. This lasted for the three days it took him to finish it. Great job, Max!

I like it a lot and recommend it for people who like Monsters, Drama, and Action.This book is like Diary of a Wimpy kid and The Walking Dead mixed together and I almost never read books on my kindle(AKA:tablet) but this book was so fun that surprisingly, I was not glued to my kindle playing a game but a book.Seriously, a BOOK!?

This is a wonderful book. I met the author in the summer of 2015 when he was in Princeton, NJ at a children's book show (before the release) and he spoke briefly about the book. The inner child was very excited to actually read the content. When it finally arrived, I was delighted to find that it was well written and the illustrations are wonderful. The format isn't traditional but that's what I loved a lot about it. I highly recommend this book for parents that have creative-mind kids or adults that want to indulge in a great adventure. I also recommend it as a reference for beginning children's book writers.

This is a great book on my son loved it and the fact that it's a graphic novel kept him very interested in it I can't wait till they come out with more very great for a child that does not enjoy reading he really enjoy this I will get more books

Very nice

This is such a cool book ! The dinosaurs were pretty easy to build and my seven year old nephew just loved how we could construct the pop ups. Gave as a Christmas present so not sure about the durability of it .
