I really love this book. It presents foods that are currently popular and and also new takes on traditional foods. The book presents techniques at four different levels, from simple to complex. However, one can dive into whatever pleases. For instance, though I am professionally trained and can prepare complex foods, level one includes a recipe for home made ricotta, which I have wanted to prepare for a long time, but haven't gotten around to. The fact that I can turn it into Lemon-Ricotta Pudding ala Chef Daniel Patterson makes it all the more fun to try. Another asset of this book is that the instructions are beautifully and understandably written, and the pictures illustrate the process well. I like the fact that the photographs present the foods and steps simply , and yet they look so good that I can't wait to prepare them. I am excited to prepare the meat ravioli, which my mother-in-law made to perfection. This is the first recipe that causes me to salivate! (She showed me her magic, which involved a pinch of this and a handful of that, but I didn't quite get it.) I am pleased to add this book to my collection and am quite sure I will learn a great deal despite years of cooking and cookbooks.

I always borrow cookbooks from the library before I purchase them because I already have an obscene number of cookbooks. I don't need any more, especially with the plethora of recipes available to us via the Internet. However, "Master Recipes: A Step-by-Step Guide" is definitely on my list of books to purchase. It has a wealth of recipes, both common and unusual. Included in the unusual recipes are beef jerky (I recently had homemade beef jerky for the first time and it was amazing), marshmallows, ricotta cheese, and caramels. I know that there are brave souls out there who make these items from scratch, but I have never had the courage to try. I like this book so much that I'm going to treat myself to a new copy from Amazon rather than a used copy from a third seller.

Looking back on the last 50 years of my life, one of best things that ever happened to me was my wife's uncle telling me to buy and read this book. That was a year before I shipped out for Vietnam.A few years after I returned, I remembered his words when we found out he had passed and I bought the book. We had two kids, paycheck to paycheck, and no savings. I read the book and it hit home; hard. Slowly, week-by-week, we started to build savings. Now, we have a good retirement, well off and secure. This book started it off.Easy to read and understand, timeless message. This book should be required reading for all school kids. It doesn't espouse greed like Think and Grow Rich. It simply teaches that you already have the ability to grow your prosperity from what you already have.READ THIS BOOK and change your life forever.

I buy this book by the case and give it to all the young people (14-25) in my neighborhood. It's an easy read and gives seven basic principles on saving and investing money. I was raised on the 10% rule and have passed it on to the next generation. It is written in parable form, so it's interesting as well as instructive. I highly recommend this book of wisdom for the youth in anyone's life.

I've read this book many times and I try to read it every year so as to refresh my memory and ensure my path. When I first read this, it was an amazing epiphany and I immediately took action. I was broke, about to lose my house, and looking for a way out of the hole I'd dug myself into. The rules within this book works well! I live in Hawaii now, in a nice suburban house, without worry of money. I am always surprised when I'm handed my next paycheck because I no longer count the days to each. Many thanks to the writer, the translator, the archeologist, and of course, the Babylonians!

I read this book years ago. As a result I listened to one piece of advice and now will have a comfortable retirement.Because I was a Christian I believed that I should tithe 10% of my income. I was tithing on my net income, not my gross. In my heart I knew that I should be tithing on my gross iincome. After reading this book, I decided that I should tithe on my gross, but in addition I should tithe (10%) to myself as well. That retirement is what got me through the crash in 2008 and has allowed me to purchase a small retirement property.

Just thought I should write this review as a warning to others. The Richest Man in Babylon is one of my favorite books. It's a great "back to the basics" look at finances. When I'm off with my finances, I dig out my copy of this book. I thought about doing a study group with some members of my church. So, I wanted to check this one out because the "Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century" part of the title led me to believe that it would be a more modern version maybe removing the thee's and thou's... kinda like an NIV vs KJV of the Bible. I WAS MISTAKEN!!!It's both taller and wider than my current beat up version but the font they used is soooo small that I couldn't bring myself to make a detailed comparison- unlike the cover and back cover which are huge in comparison. They jammed 160 pages into 88 POORLY!!! I've never sent a book back before, but this one must go back!!!So get the book, but not this version!!!

First off, this was probably the 20th book about (finance, getting rich, making $, etc) I read. For my adult life I struggled with $, debt, bills, etc.While the info contained within this book certainly is no secret, the story spoke to me in a way that nothing else had. Maybe it was the context, language, or the historical time tested theory, I'm not sure but whatever it was, it resonated.I started reading this book a few years ago in a hotel room on Christmas eve.Something about the stories, lessons, and history really spoke to me. I made a commitment and the following year saw me get out of the hamster wheel of debt that I'd been running in since I was 18.... And establish a respectable savings.Some won't appreciate the stories, some may dismiss the lessons as "common sense" (despite the fact that they aren't applying them and are broke.)Other stories, lessons, formats, may speak better to you.... That's fine.But for me,This book along with the millionaire mind are head and shoulders the two books that have made the biggest impact on me.

3 stars does not mean it is a bad book. Definitely worth a read, especially if you are interested in personal finance without the droll of a finance textbook. Three stars means that the beginning of the book was far stronger than the end, and after halfway the information started repeating a bit and the anecdotes were not as compelling as the beginning ones. However, this book was definitely unique and a quick read with lots of good information that still holds truth now.

This book should be on the summer reading list for every school. I read this when I was younger, and again recently. I read it to my 8 year old daughter. Sometimes a narrative like this is what people need to really understand things. For example, I could say "use money to acquire assets that will make more money, not liabilities or things that just depreciate." But that's just one sentence, and we might all soon forget it. When you take a set of concepts and put it into a story, it gives people a scaffold to hang their understanding on. That's what this book is. It's been around forever, and it is still highly recommended, and there is a good reason for that.As for this edition, I found it to be fine. I wanted the original text, and this met the criteria.

Mishima's love poem to an island, wrapped in a traditional story of young, forbidden love. This was my first Mishima. Like the best poets, Mishima paints vivid pictures of the natural world. The island of Uta-jima comes alive on the pages, its surrounding waters equal parts beautiful and dangerous, its beaches diverse, its ecosystem unique. The love story is familiar, especially for those of us who grew up in small communities where farming and gossip are the primary local trades. For the most part, Mishima likes his characters, even the ones who clearly are not the heroes. In fact, he may like his characters a bit too much, at least in this early stage of his career, as the heroes are somewhat overloaded with virtue. It was also odd to me, that we learn so much about the breasts of the female inhabitants of Uta-jima. But I'm fond of breasts, and you could do worse than have someone of Mishima's capabilities describe them for you.

This is an elegiac book about 1950s rural Japan and its values and harsh life, always on the edge of poverty. The plot is simplistic only on the surface but it is at its heart, an exploration of Shintoism in the daily life of simple people. Don't let the plot of boy meets girl and undergoes a few trials before he is permitted to become engaged-it is far more complex. Read it slowly and then consider each detail. It is lyrical in its descriptions of the landscape and sea.

This book is about love in its purest form, but oddly enough it doesn't hit you over the head with it: a testament to Mishima's beautiful writing and also to the deeper meaning of the story. The main characters Shinji and Hatsue are traditional in every sense and he is drawn to her at first sight, then comes a chance for them to get it on but they don't, even though everyone thinks they did, no thanks to the antagonists Chiyoko who has been westernized along with Yasuo who tries to get it on with Hatsue in a not so traditional way. Mishima was certainly disillusioned with his changing Japan and longed for a return to its traditional roots and this book shows that, as good old tradition triumphs in the end and the antagonists come to some sort of realization of the error of their ways. And like i said, this is the beauty of Mishima's writing, in that first and foremost this is a romance about two teenagers falling in love, but by the end you realize that it is so much more. Mishima was great indeed.

This is one of the modern Japanese classics written by a talented author Mishima who has written many best sellers, and is about a timeless theme of love at first sight. The story takes place on a remote island called Utajima, and is love story between a young fisherman and a daughter of a wealthy man. Through his courageous acts during a dangerous storm, he gains the approval of the villagers and the wealthy man for their relationship that was kept hidden until then. Utajima (Song Island) in the story is actually Kamishima (God's Island), a small fishing island off the coast of Ise in south central Japan. As of 2016, though the island has a few accommodations for tourists, it remains pretty much the busy, fishing village it was when this story was written.

I actually was required to read this book for a summer reading project for school. I actually found this book to be enjoyable in many ways. It is a great love story that warmed and crushed my heart several times over, and it has great character development as well as very distinguishable characters. I actually found the story to be a bit drawn out at times, however, it was more than made up for with its exciting and enticing moments. I would definitely recommend this one to a casual reader, but likely not someone who is attempting to deeply analyze the books they read.

June 5, 2008I just finished reading the Sound of Waves. It's a true to life account of life in a Japanese fishing island in the mid 1950's. What would people do without all their modern conveniences, luxuries and entertainments? They would probably live like the people of Uta Jima, finding joy in a simple life close to nature and their families and neighbors. When someone needs to fix their house, all their friends come to help out. When a young couple suffers a crisis, the whole village helps work out the problem. And being close to nature, even the Gods are there to lend their behind the scenes assistance. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to experience life in rural Japan.

Written in a simple yet lovely style that is vaguely reminiscent of Hesse's Siddhartha, Mishima's tale of innocent love and virtue is stirring. Unlike his customarily dark themes, he takes us to a small fishing village on a Japanese isle and creates a legend of two hardy youths that meet and fall in love. Despite their young age, their bonds are strong and through all their trials together you can't help but fall in love with them both. This is an excellent book that I would recommend to any reader.

About the Author

Dr. Nicole Forsgren does research and strategy at Google Cloud following the acquisition of her startup DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) by Google. She is best known for her work measuring the technology process and as the lead investigator on the largest DevOps studies to date. She has been an entrepreneur, professor, sysadmin, and performance engineer. Nicole's work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals. Nicole earned her PhD in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona, and is a Research Affiliate at Clemson University and Florida International University. She lives in San Francisco, CA. Jez Humble is co-author of The DevOps Handbook, Lean Enterprise, and the Jolt Award-winning Continuous Delivery. He is currently researching how to build high performing teams at his startup, DevOps Research and Assessment, LLC, and teaching at UC Berkeley. He lives in California. When I originally posted my review, I said that I would be glad to amend or even delete it based upon my concerns being answered or their being shown to be incorrect. One of the authors, Jez Humble, took the time to respond to me. I still have some lesser concerns but I am satisfied by his response. There was peer review of the research and DORA was not formed until after the research had been submitted for review. Since I was wrong about those points, I have upgraded my rating and have revised my review which starts in the next paragraph.Note that I make no claim to be as skilled when it comes to research as is Forsgren. Hands down, she has an impressive resume and experience which makes me look like what you scrape off the bottom of your shoe in comparison. When I approach this book and the research, I am concerned regarding the use of Snowball research. However, I recognize how hard it is to conduct research in the workplace and the so-called "real world" outside the laboratory. When reading this book, my main point would be to keep in mind what the authors openly say, to their credit, that the research presented does not lead itself to predictive or causal analysis. However, it can be used to draw inferences that those implementing DevOps can find very valuable. Use this book to expand your ideas of how to improve software delivery.

This book took me from clueless to convert in three days. The authors leverage their research into a clear presentation of DevOps principles, what works, how it works and why it works. This was a great introduction to the concepts because the fact that it is based on concrete measures keeps it laser focused on the whole point - becoming, being and remaining a high performing software delivery organization. It was inspiring because it never loses sight of the fact that an organization is formed of human beings and that DevOps is about culture - and that is why - and when-- it works.

This book is essential reading for anybody who's writing software and needs to deal with management. For one thing, it finally puts to rest that old chestnut that you loose productivity if you spend time writing tests. Using real studies and actual metrics, it proves once and for all that improving code quality IMPROVES productivity. And that's just in the first chapter! I can't recommend this book too highly.

There have been a number of books that I've looked at and read on DevOps. Some are very technical and some are too lightweight. I think this book perfectly balanced technical aspects with using building blocks to take the reader on a journey of understanding.I highly recommend this book as a book for those who want to become more familiar with DevOps and how it will impact their organizational structure and culture. This book does not get into the technical how to and I think that is perfectly acceptable.

I picked this book up a while ago, and haven't really used it all that much. Good information, but does it work?Well, earlier this week, I got a money order drawn up for my rent. I don't use checks; landlord doesn't take cash or electronic payments; so money orders are how it gets done. It was ridiculously sticky outside: Florida, beginning of August, you do the math. So by the time I'd walked home, everything in my pockets, rent included, was sweat-soaked. I put the money order out to dry...and, naturally, promptly forgot where I'd put it.So, on the last day it was due, I talked to my landlord and said, look, I misplaced the thing, and you know that's not like me. I've looked EVERYWHERE, dangit... Just make sure it's in the box when I come in, I was told.So, after looking everywhere one more time, I said, what the heck...can the angels find it?Enter Menakel, one of the angels in this book. I was kind of nervous, truth be told, when I did the ritual. Didn't see or hear anything weird, didn't really feel much; I just got the impression that I should get some sleep after all the searching. I set my alarm for three hours, and woke up impossibly refreshed for having slept so little. Went to the kitchen to get something to drink......and just about slipped on my missing rent! It was on the floor, in plain sight! I don't know how it got there, or how I'd overlooked it while tearing the place apart for two days, but there it was!Thank you, Menakel! And thank you, Ben, for giving us this incredible work!This works! GET IT!!

There is so much to say about this book but I will make it quick, this is basically the same angels as Damon Brand books but, Damon divided the angels presented here in 3 books that cost about the same as this, if not a bit more, this guy put it all in 1 book and the method is WAYYYY simpler, I have to say I pirated this book first and promised to myself if I get results I would buy it, well, I DID get results so here I am, support your author so he can keep releasing material and trust me, this method is AS SIMPLE AS IT GETS.

I used it for a chronic sinus infection, I wasn't expecting much since health magick is hit or miss...but it worked! a chronic sinus infection cleared up for the first time in 5 months! This was huge, because I tried so many things and my stomach was getting ripped apart by the antibiotics and the infections just wear me down.

Okay, so I admit I was skeptical about this book. Thinking the author was out to make a quick buck riding on the success of the Gallery of Magick books. But I couldn't be happier that I was so wrong.My girlfriend was sick and I wasn't sure which ritual to turn to or spirit to use. For some reason I decided to try this book out and call to Archangel Raphael. Raphael came quickly when called. I felt his presence and even though I hardly ever get visions, I seemed to see his smiling face. At this moment I was confident that I was being heard and agknowledged.Needless to say, my girlfriend felt better within hours. Her pain was gone! Her appetite returned as well. Not good for my wallet but good for her stomach!I am so grateful to Mr. Woodcroft for this brilliant offering of magick. A veritable feast of spirits to work with, and a streamlined ritual process that engeniously encodes the necessary thoughts, emotions, and states of mind within the ritual to make the magick successful.For example when you chant the divine words and you agknowledge that you are being heard by the angel even before you know you are being heard, that is a key that makes this magick successful.I look foreward to working with the other spirits and archangels here. I look forward to revolutionizing my world with the power of this magick! Namaste.

About year ago I asked two angels (using the ritual from the book) to help my wife shine during her business presentation in front of higher company management. She was doing her best to prepare everything but as the day of presentation was approaching, her excitement was surging through the roof which was understandable cause that event was a major step toward her eventual promotion. So I decided to interfere (covertly) and smooth the things a little for her. I basically asked the angels to keep her calm and sharp no matter what, but angels had done it in their own divine way, simply and yet extremely effective. Just a few minutes before presentation was about to start, all members of the esteemed audience received messages on their phones about paid bonuses for that year which made them to be in perfect mood for next half an hour (happy and satisfied). Needless to say, everything went extremely well. So thank you Ben for this great book, and of course thank you angels for helping me a great deal.

This book is really scary and at times funny. It has a sweeping history and geography lesson of Japan that weaves nicely with the stories, and makes it even more interesting and frightful; that is, to think it all really exists. The author Thomas Bauerle, apparently a transplant from the United States, but living in Japan for a number of years, brings an unusual perspective to the well worn Ghost genres, that most Americans will appreciate even more. Because it's in another country, that strangeness adds to the overall effect. This would be a good book to accompany a College Course in Japanese Literature and/or Film. Highly recommended, especially on Kindle.

When it comes to ghosts, poltergeists, wandering spirits and the like, most people are sitting on the skeptical fence. Mr. Bauerle’s book, written from the point of view of people who have experienced supernatural beings, is alive with tales of the dead. The author’s personal experience should be enough, but he has done exhaustive research into ghost stories told by his acquaintances and students. As far as a scientific explanation of these creepy events, his take is that science is a worthy endeavor but there is a lot that is just plain inexplicable. Some of the ghosts seem to be harmless, but the malevolent hands that drowned 36 schoolgirls in Ise Bay, as recounted in “The Tragedy at Tsu City,” will surely send chills up the reader’s spine. After reading "Kanashibari," I think even the most dedicated nonbeliever will just have to jump off the skeptical fence and look over his/her shoulder from time to time.

A Haunting book (pun intended) I could not put it down. Well written and insightful.

Kanashibari is An interesting collection of Gothic tales for enthusiasts of the supernatural and for those interested in Japan and Japanese culture. If monsters and ghost stories are expressions of humanity's fears, then this collection will give readers insight into the anxieties troubling the people of Japan. Of special interest are the experiences of foreigners whose contact with the local supernatural is informed, like more routine experiences, by their being slightly separate and outside the customs and tradition of their host country. To know a country, one must know its ghosts. The prose is chillingly direct and this collection will give even the most hardened skeptic plenty to ponder over.

Great read. A fascinating look into the super natural and paranormal as told through the experiences of people who encountered these ghosts and spirits first hand. Also, a very good description of the history and cultural beliefs in Japan regarding the paranormal. I highly recommended it for anyone interested in Japan.

About the Author

Ronnie Sidney, II, MSW, is a father, therapist, author, app developer, professional speaker and entrepreneur. He received a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014. Ronnie was raised in Tappahannock, Virginia, and attended Essex County Public Schools (ECPS). While attending ECPS, he spent several years in Special Education after being diagnosed with a learning disability. The stigmatization of special education created a lack of interest in school. Nevertheless, he graduated from Essex High School in 2001, but with a 1.8 GPA. With limited options regarding four-year colleges, he decided to enroll in J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Virginia. The following year, he transferred to Old Dominion University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services in 2006. Ronnie's early academic challenges ignited a passion within him to pursue social justice and to work with the youth. He has spent over eight years in the mental health and academic counseling fields and currently works as an outpatient therapist at the Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck Community Services Board (MP-NNCSB). Ronnie is an active member of the Richmond Association of Black Social Workers (RABSW). He founded Creative Medicine: Healing Through Words, an expressive writing program for offenders. He implemented the program at the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Virginia for six months before expanding the program into an LLC. The company's mission is to improve participants' social, emotional, and physical health through therapeutic writing and dialogue. In 2015, Creative Medicine: Healing Through Words, LLC published "Nelson Beats The Odds", an inspiring graphic novel that celebrates friendship, resilience and empowerment. Nelson, the books' main character, overcomes his learning disability and ADHD diagnosis with the help of his parents and special education teacher. I really like this book. I am an adult who read it in support of the author, who grew up dealing with similar impairments as his protagonist.I appreciate the fact that the main characters are children of color, but they are relatable to all people, particularly those affected by learning disabilities. It is also encouraging to see that people like Richard Branson, one of the most successful moguls in the world, was predicted by one of his teachers to either be a total failure in life or a massive success. That is something I never would've known had I not read this book.The statistics and quotes are as impactful as the actual story. Perhaps, the author will publish longer books that may be marketed to older children (and even adults). Just as I was engrossed in the story, it was over! I love the illustrations as well. They are beautiful. I definitely recommend this book.

I personally enjoyed this book. I am a mom of a special needs child and as a parent I know that sometimes even kids with special needs or thst require special ed still need to be pushed. They are no different from other kids. They have dreams and goals and they should be pushed towards their greatness. I love the fact that although he went thru school years in special education he decided not to settle with being below average in life and that drove him to be the success he is today. It's good to know that while I'm still process with my son who is 4 that in the end he has unlimited possiblities.

The illustrations are awesome! Presenting the story in the format it's in will make it less intimidating for children who struggle with reading. Having worked with so many students with these issues and concerns, I think the story lends itself to empathy, motivation, and determination. This is a must read for parents and/ or educators.

This book is a great start and introduces some sensitive and ignored topics in the African American community and education. My only hope is that this book opens a dialogue and brings awareness to the over-placement of young men of color in special education. I would have liked to see more detail about students struggles in the classroom and descriptions of techniques to self regulate behavior but I understand this is a YA comic geared towards children. Thank you for not being afraid to start this conversation.

As a licensed clinical social worker ... over the years I've spent time with various individuals (clients and otherwise) who have difficulty considering even the possibility that they can "beat the odds" - I see this true story helping someone to consider the possibility, and then finding motivation, and then drawing on their supports to follow through. This book is nicely balanced and accessible ...

If only there were more parents and more teachers and more just every day people who would plant seeds of positivity into the lives of young people. Just see what can happen with positive support!

I am a Special Education teacher myself. I love the story and the format as well as the cited quotes at the bottom of the pages. It has a great message and a great story of diverse representation.

It is an inspiring story of overcoming special education stigmas. However, it is a fictional story as it does not accurately depict how a student truly becomes eligible for special education. The illustrations are beautiful. This story offers hope to many students in special education who may feel that special education is the final stop when it is not. The story demonstrates one young mans triumph and resiliency.

I always enjoy a story well-told that features characters who are flawed like we humans are. The writer presents a main character who is struggling with complications in his life, as well as the ordinary and the mundane. I was rooting for Evan while at the same time I was frustrated by some of his actions, but these imperfect actions drive the plot. One of my favorite authors is Patricia Highsmith and this author’s style is a bit reminiscent of Highsmith.

An edgy thriller with something to say. A transsexual protagonist in this genrebreaks new ground and could easily be the next Girl with Tattoos. Taut, professional,could be more detailed and a bit longer. Well worthwhile.

The twists are hard to figure out. I love that! A great read for a rainy day! Hard to put down.

Book was slow. Characters a little strange . Skimmed the reading because the story dragged on and on. I think the plot needed help.

As a lover of science fiction and fantasy, I am quite willing to suspend disbelief in the interest of a good story. However, this book pushed me beyond my threshold. There were just too many completely unbelievable events. I wrote them down as I read. I counted twelve instances in all.For example, I don't believe a mother who raised a child could fail to recognize him if they sat face to face in a room for two hours talking, no matter how much the child had changed. The essential self is still there and a mother more than anyone would recognize her child.The protagonist also does a lot of really stupid things, yet he doesn't seem to be a foolish person. I didn't buy it. For example, he is under suspicion for a serious crime and told by the police not to leave the area. He promptly does that, and also misses an important hearing that is critical to his continued employment.He betrays the trust of his boss, which causes very serious consequences for the boss, yet there is no problem between them in the end and he keeps his job. This leaked information was concerning an open police investigation and there are no consequences there either. I just don't think that would happen.I don't ask much from a mystery thriller except entertainment, and I did enjoy reading this for the most part. Towards the end, though, there were just too many of those implausible events and I started losing interest.Note: I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I really liked this book. I've been looking for Book 2 but haven't found it yet. Is there more books in this series?

The story was slow moving. A good read but not a page turner. It feels really unfinished hope there's a sequel.
