This is my 2nd Elmo Jenkins book. Gentle, clean humor and nice characters. I liked the first one enough to read the sequel. Enjoyed the church politics. But I didn't really get invested in any of the characters and the humor is more the type that makes you smile, but not laugh. If you're looking for a pleasant book you can put down and come back to later, this one is nice. But if you're looking to be completely sucked in and swept away, or for something fall-off-your-chair funny, keep looking. Bill Bryson is funnier talking about buying equipment for walking the Appalachian trail (in his book Walk in the Woods) than the stories here about quirky church characters doing outrageous things that you would think would be funnier, but somehow are not.

Once again, I have thoroughly enjoyed another chapter in the life of Elmo Jenkins! This book is so cleverly constructed, and though it basically weaves together various situations encountered by church staff folks, the use of humorous situations, along with things that happen that are not funny but truly serious and thought provoking, the book stays relevant, fun to read, and never dull! My personal experience on a large "First Church" staff (34 years) makes me know that McMillian Moody is writing a great deal that is drawn from personal experiences.The quirky humor of the main character, the inevitable look at the 'church politics' that seem to always play havoc with a church staff of any size, accompanied by tales of the strongly supportive and optimistic mindset of some church members pitted against the extremely opinionated and generally negative mindset of some of the entrenched 'oldtimers' who avoid change at all costs - make for a combination that keeps the reader turning the pages to see what's going to happen.It is a great read! I look forward to number three in the Elmo Jenkins books!

Reverend Jenkins is back, and this time, he's a full-fledged staff member, not just the intern in the basement. Bonnie has decorated his office (with some help from others at First Church) while he's been gone, and it's a vast improvement over his closet office from his intern days. Much of the plot is similar to #1: day-to-day operations at First Church, which sounds much larger than any church I've ever attended. He and Bonnie are also planning their wedding, which ends up being performed by one of their fellow staff members out at an acoustically perfect place in the woods, with the attire theme being early 1900's.

It was a humorous book and one I enjoyed. It was not deep or philosophical which is why I gave it 3 stars. It was cute. If you have read the third book about the man with the cup of tea and enjoyed it you will also enjoy this one. He is able to actually bring some pertinent comments to what is happening in churches today. He was point on in many ways with that. I carry my Kindle in my purse so that I can read wherever I happen to be and have some free time, ie; waiting for an appt. So it was a refreshing thing to be able to pick up and read as I had time and be able to continue the strain of the plot.

Elmo goes from intern to Pastor's assistant with the charge to research moving the church from traditional to contemporary.Not an easy task. Then of course there is the mystery of who keeps putting "Fertie" in his life? A great inspirational book, that we know people like these people, and even see ourselves.My church went through some great changes a few years ago. As an old traditionalist it was hard to give up my traditions. It was awesome to see others go through the same struggles & the pure joy of coming out on the other side, or the sorrow of not accepting. Kind of like Elmo's getting married and learning the give & take of marriage. His many talks with 'Father' Ted, a retired pastor from another church who joins their staff. He is famous for his TV commercials where he dresses like a monk and is Father Ted, the spokesman for a tire company. He provides the words of wisdom for Elmo in this book

After thoroughly enjoying the first Elmo book, the second did not disappoint...at least as far as the storyline and tale-weaving. A few more editing issues were noted, including "variances" in the spelling of a couple of the recurring characters' names, and a brief appearance by Martin Scorsese in which he also fell victim to the misspelling monster. Other items of a careless nature appeared, namely missing letters, prepositional misdemeanors, and some homonym confusion.BUT the charming, true-to-life characters and interesting writing style do prevail again in Book Two in spite of these transgressions. I'll keep reading. Still, I'm holding that last star hostage in exchange for some better editing.

I was really surprised before I read this installment to see that another reviewer complained bitterly that Feng shui and the statue of an ancient fertility god had been little running threads in this novel. How very silly. The fertility statute was a gift to Elmo from an elderly and eccentric church member who spent most of her adult life in foreign mission service. She had apparently learned to, heavens to Betsy, have TOLERANCE for other people's beliefs. Sounds like an actual Christian to me, and not an indicator of someone who should be burned at the stake for setting foot in a Christian church. And for most of us (though not all) here in the western world, Feng shui is a decorating technique that encourages tranquility and did not necessarily mean that the user is calling upon ancient Chinese spirits.Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I would just like to say that I still love Elmo and his entire cast of characters. I love that each chapter is a story into itself while still tying in to the whole. I love Elmo's attitude, his humor, his genuineness, and I wish I was more like him. I recommend for sure, to anyone.
