I enjoyed this book for many reasons. Firstly I know the author and she is a kickass person. She is lady that is nearly single handedly is keeping the art of the written word alive in our little slice of Southern Louisiana. She hosts the weekly writers series in her gorgeous shop in Grand Coteau. She has made such a positive impact in our area. I am an autobiography fiend, love 'em. I like Poboy Contraband because I got to learn about Africa, New Orleans and Grand Coteau. I have known quite a few people with a positive HIV status, I thought I understood a bit of the impact but to read it from this author was very intense. Intense in the most honest way . You really take the journey with Patrice in her book. I like this book because the author is funny, I laughed out loud several times, teared up and straight up sobbed. I have only read it once, or inhaled it actually. I look forward to rereading it and finding additional meaning because she is proper lover of words. She is a remarkable writer and poet. I also love the book because the cover is gorgeous and a friend of mines artwork is featured.

Po Boy Contraband is a book that once begun is difficult to put down-as one shares the journey into the mind, heart, and life of a courageous young woman with HIV. The memoir is a series of anecdotes that serve to take the reader along with author Patrice Melnick as she searches to find her way to happiness and fulfillment. I became incensed by the doctor who pried voyeur-like into how she contracted the disease and with whom. I shared Patrice's ups and downs as she makes her way from Africa to Alaska to New Orleans and finally to Grand Coteau, LA where she carves out her own place in life and discovers enduring love, a caring man who appreciates her special qualities. This beautifully written book is at once poignant and bittersweet, sprinkled with humor. Truly this talented writer shows us all how to make lemonade out of lemons. I came away with a greater appreciation of life and love and family as will you too.

Ms. Melnick’s writing exposes her soul, allowing us into very personal corners. She does so with wit, humor, and a genuine love of life. Her relationship with music made me want to learn more, to look up artists and their songs. She inspires you to get up, close your eyes, and sway with the jazz. Let loose!As a recent transplant from New York, I really get why she landed in southern Louisiana. I love this culture and thankfully, she is able to clarify in such a way that I could never achieve.This is an important book about acceptance, graciousness, and mortality. This book is about living life.

Before having the opportunity to hear Ms. Melnick do an oral reading of excerpts from her book in August, 2012, the subject of HIV and the consequences of that medical condition had never captured my attention. Neither I nor any of my friends or relatives have been stricken with that disease--to my knowledge. The raw honesty conveyed through her written words compelled me to buy her book; to date I've read it three times.Almost as if she is writing a personal letter to me, the author weaves colorful depictions of her nauseated jeep ride to observe wild animals on savannahs of the Central African Republic in the mid-1980s, a romantic relationship in icy Alaska, her participation in the rhythmic Zydeco dance scene of New Orleans, and dynamics within her family of origin in Texas.Her self-described, literary nonfiction has affected me more as non-metrical poetry. Candid, deeply personal essays compel me to keep on reading and then to re-read after her meanings have sifted through to my consciousness. Ms. Melnick provides a model for facing life's adversities with humor and cautious optimism.

A powerful memoir of the author's journey with a daunting illness, written with gutsy authenticity, an amazing lack of self pity, and a poet's eye for description and detail. Crafted in short lively vignettes, her narrative weaves seamlessly between past and present, between pre-and post HIV diagnosis. I was immensely touched by her openness, her courage, her down to earth humor, and her wickedly observant insights in describing how she deals with the social as well as the physical implications of her disease. Some of the passages are laugh-out-loud funny. I became immersed in the vibrant rhythms, the continual feast of music, dance and rich spicy food, the sensual pleasures that make up life in southern Louisiana, her adopted home. And it is her determination to remain engaged and open to these experiences-- to forge relationships with friends, lovers, colleagues, and community-that is, for me, the crux of her journey and what makes this story so compelling. This talented writer reminds us all of the importance of living our daily lives with a heightened awareness and appreciation for our surroundings. Her memoir is a delight and a gift to the spirit--I highly recommend it.

We follow the author through stories of sorrow and thwarted connections, her lusty pursuits of sensation, beauty, and partners on the dance floor, and ultimately, to the discovery of enduring love.I read this book all the way through in one sitting, and Melnick's voice will resonate in my mind and imagination a long, long time. Highly recommended.
