I found author Carson McCloud a few years ago with his debut book, "Devlin's Ride." It is wonderful. I am so pleased to see his third novel surpass that effort."Blood on the Bighorns" is amazing. The plot is gripping, clever, heartwarming, terrifying, fast paced, and completely entertaining. Set in Wyoming in the early days of Western expansion, it is an authentic reflection of the challenges that came with settling the wilderness and the tough men and women who stepped up to carve out a life and make a home there.What makes this story exceptional is the remarkable character development. A youth approaching manhood is left an orphan with a ranch to handle alone. It is stolen from him. As Brett struggles to regain his home and his dead parents' lifelong dream, he matures right before the reader's eyes. His journey is fascinating, very authentic, and so well crafted that the reader feels pulled into the events as if they were there. The secondary characters are also quite special. No more hints from me. Discovery is so much fun. I hope this author continues to write more terrific stories. I'll be waiting. This is a marvelous story which I highly recommend. (I have never met the author nor have any connection with its publication)This is a historical adventure with a dash of clean romance. Some violence. Appropriate for teens and up.Side note: A good novel requires both craftmanship and creativity. Storytelling is art which this author can do very well. Grammar provides clarity and structure. Proofreading, which seems to be in short supply in many kindle editions, should be the easy part of building a book. So why the simple editing mistakes? Hire an A student in English. Or retired teacher. Or something. Not a deal breaker, but so unnecessarily irritating to your audience. I kept reaching for my red pen.

An old friend of his father, an IIndian, saves the young man. The young man has to regain his health for the adventure to begin. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

A young man discovers his father hanging from a tree and thinks he did it to himself. The ranch comes to him but a neighbor wants to buy it. When the young man says he won't sell life turns deadly.

Drugs, human trafficking all these horrors have ALWAYS been part of the tapestry they woven itself into America's seams. Greedy men who used their money and bullets to steal people's properties, murdering innocent people without any moral convictions. This what happened in this western when a young boy finds his Pa, hanging from a tree, thinking all these years that his father committed suicide because of the loss of his wife. This wasn't true, his father was murdered by the same men who are now taken over his father's ranch...no remorse.Love does it really matter, but it does in this western. A young Native American girl with others are kidnapped to be taken to the mines to be used as prostitutes for the miners, also there's the introduction of "opium" which was to be sold to whomever wanted and could afford it.Lisa a young Mormon girl, Allie the Betrayer and Mourning Song the Outcast, all making Brett wonder what's going on?? Lots of women and which one will Brett decide whose the one for him..In the west it takes a lot of fortitude and stamina to deal with all the trials and tribulations that rear their heads every day, second of your life..The only thing guaranteed in life is "DEATH."It's not a nice thought, but it's reality..Ride easy Brett and whomever you choose to ride with you....

First of all, I am a die-hard and long-time Pointer Sisters fan. That said, Ruth Pointer's auto-biography is completely different than most celebrity biographies. If you are looking for a book that is full of name-dropping, bad-mouthing celebrity gossip, this is NOT it. Ruth bares all in this painfully honest story of her life from childhood to present day. She writes in detail about her hard-charging life of drugs and alcohol and, happily, how she tackled those demons with decades of sobriety. Ruth is open about struggles with parenting and love while living the life of a music star. Readers will find interesting how Ruth and her sisters managed their relationships during their 40 years in the music business. Ruth has led a very complex and amazing life and her struggles and triumphs are well worth the read. Just look at that smile of hers on the cover and tell me how you don't want to know what it behind it.

What a story! I never would have imagined what Ruth wrote. Of course as a fan since their first release in 1973 and a steady student of their vocals (I learned so much from them) I knew there was more to their tight knit sisterhood than was visible. But the strength, struggles, triumphs and continued legacy are even more profound to me. Indeed "Still So Excited" (as "Only Sisters Can Do That honey") is a glorious testament to sisterly love with no boundaries and relentless dedication to each other. The unified vocals and distinct personalities bonded like a slice of heaven for the world to enjoy. It makes me sad to know some of the backstory and the lack of promotion they received from inept recording companies in their latter years. There were so many missed opportunities for major hits. Still, the group made history unmatched because there is nor was there a group like The Pointer Sisters that dared to record and sing in SO many different musical styles. Just try and name another female vocal trio or quartet that accomplished that. No ya cant but YES they can and DID!

Just finished reading the book...I was floored at the life of Mrs Ruth Pointer. I was a fan of The Pointer Sisters, even though they were before my time. Ruth was always my favorite, and after reading the book, I discovered she was Michael Jacksons' favorite as well. Her accounts of her sister June sadden me, but her spirit lives on through the music. Overall great read; Sister Ruth puts it all out there, good, bad, and the ugly.

Growing up a fan of all music, the Sisters were and still are a class act! They know how to put on a fun and entertaining show! I own every album and have been a fan nearly all their career. Not every music group is perfect as they all go through their highs and lows. The Pointer Sisters are no exception to this rule and Ruth nicely puts it out there to share with everyone in a no-holds-barred way.Honestly written with many telling memories, she shares what it is like to be in the business and how the road was bumpy both personally and professionally. She writes of motherhood and how her failures led to surmounting issues as their popularity continued to rise and soar. She's honest about what she liked and was disappointed with when it came to their music releases. She's honest about the dysfunction within her family both personally and professionally.Being a long-time fan, I thought I knew more about The Pointer Sisters than I actually did and I appreciate Ruth's openness about the history of one of my favorite groups. Clean and sober for 30 years, too! I am very to have had the opportunity to read, "Still So Excited!" A very enjoyable read!

Ruth Pointer's "Still So Excited" is colorful, candid and compelling. I couldn't put it down. All the triumphs and tragedies of her life and times with her (Pointer) sisters are accounted for in this unflinchingly honest and poignant memoir. Pointer speaks her truth and trauma without a hint of self-pity. And it's certainly not all bad times. Pointer emphasizes the good times in both her professional and personal life. She tells her story with the same easy-going warmth and familiarity that her beautiful voice conveys in her recordings (Ruth is the lead voice on the hits "Automatic" and "Neutron Dance"). She also has a wicked sense of humor and I laughed aloud more than once in the few days it took to read this page-turner. I also really enjoy that Pointer discusses the Pointer Sisters' music in some detail. She talks about producers, musicians, recording sessions, songwriters, industry execs and the process of making the music over the course of the Pointer Sisters' long illustrious recording history. She also shares several antecdotes about her many interactions with other artists and entertainers. I highly recommend to anyone with even a casual interest in the Pointer Sisters.

This is one of THE BEST autobiographies I have ever read!! Full of wonderful inside stories about Ruth Pointer, her sisters, family and famous friends. I couldn't put this book down! Very well written with great musical knowledge & trivia, wonderful anecdotes full of humor and honesty, and stories about surviving and thriving in a tough business where the music business builds you up and then tries to tear you down. Ruth is a survivor and her story is one full of laughter, having fun in life, her faith in the almighty, sharing the good times & bad with her fans and readers, dealing with her own drug use as well as the sad downfall of her baby sister June. She doesn't hold anything back and really delivers a fascinating inside look of life as a Pointer Sister.

I grew up on the Pointer Sisters from "Yes We Can Can and much of what came from them after that. Very straightforward and a fast-moving read. Ruth definitely took us on a roller-coaster ride with a look into the music and entertainment industry as well as the highs and lows and then highs again in her own life and that of her family. I really enjoyed this book!

There’s little way to read The Blade Itself and not think of Game of Thrones. I hate to say that, but it’s true. Abercrombie’s rich fantasy world owes a lot of debt to Martin’s. After all, both series are ones in which magic is largely pushed to the background and minimized; both focus on anti-heroes (at best) and misfits; both juxtapose court intrigues and political scheming against much larger threats that could unravel the world as the characters know it. But more than anything else, there’s the sense of cynicism towards the genre that underlies both series. These are worlds in which traditional heroism barely matters, where old school honor and chivalry are a way to death – if you’re lucky.And yet, to rely too heavily on that comparison is to miss out on all the ways in which The Blade Itself absolutely soars and stands on its own two feet. Over the course of this first novel of The First Law trilogy, Abercrombie sets up a fascinating world, but more than that, he dives deeply into their psyches, giving us a sense of these broken people. Our three main characters – Logen Ninefingers, Sand dan Glokta, Jezal dan Luthar – Abercrombie brings them to rich, detailed life, letting us see their scars, their psychic baggage, their complex motivations. But more than that, rather than embracing the nihilism and selfishness of the men, Abercrombie pushes them farther than that, finding an inner core of decency. It may be small, it may be only a piece of their cruelty or motivations, but it’s there. And that alone makes The First Law stand apart from Martin’s bleak, hopeless world where nothing – and no one – good can last.More than that, though, Abercrombie brings a sometimes dry, sometimes dark, but sometimes genuinely funny sense of humor to the story, allowing his characters to be more than just another grim, broken-down soul. That’s maybe most true of Bayaz, the wizard figure around whom much of the book orbits. Bayaz is no one’s idea of a typical wizard, and that jarring inability to fit expectations pays off wonderfully again and again in the book, as Bayaz demonstrates both his ability and his willingness to use them as he sees fit. In other words, it’s all of Martin’s knack for turning the genre on its head, but done with a little more heart, a bit more humor, and every bit the imagination and talent.If there’s a knock on The Blade Itself, it’s the sense that it’s an intentionally shapeless story at times, one where the lack of predictability makes it hard to make sense of at times. Is this the story of an impending war between the nations? Are the Flatheads a sort of White Walker analog – a monstrous “other” that lurks nearby? How does Ferro and her story tie in with everything going on around Adua? It’s hard to tell until near the end of the book, and even then, it’s a bit hard to get a sense of the bigger picture and how this will come together. But given how engaging, deep, and complex the characters are, how fascinating the world is, and how deep and layered the story is, I’m okay with that. I’m on board to see how this all fits together, and to see what else Abercrombie has going

It's funny. I have started reading this book four times, and only finished it once. I couldn't tell you why I stopped those first three times. The ingredients were all there, I just wasn't hungry. Now, reading it for the fourth time, spending nearly all my free time doing so and finishing up in six days, well I just can't see why the hell I stopped in the first place.The Blade Itself is an immensely promising start to a trilogy that I have decide to read straight through without breaking for other books (something I've shied away from doing in the past year or so). The writing is sharp, the dialogue flows, the world is detailed and easily imagined, but what really sets this book apart for me is the characters. Abercrombie writes some damn good characters. Interesting and dynamic, even characters that I was sure I liked, my opinion of them could be turned completely around with one action, one thought. That makes for a fun reading experience, keeps you on your toes.As fun and fast-paced as The Blade Itself was at times, I still have the feeling that it was largely set-up for what is to come in this trilogy. I purchased Before They Are Hanged immediately upon finishing last night, and I'm excited to see where it takes me.

I'm VERY picky about the fantasy genre. I'm even more picky when it comes to books that are not stand alone.That being said, this is a really great book. The characters span a huge variety of personalities and none of them seem like stereotypical fantasy archetypes. While it takes a bit to really pick up speed, it is beautifully written and has a lot of themes you don't see very often.So that being said, I'm definitely going to continue with this trilogy. Joe Abercrombie is incredibly talented. I would definitely recommend this book if you are picky with your fantasy and are looking for something a little different.

This is actually a 3.5 stars.This book wasn't bad at all, but wasn't the best either. I'm interested in seeing where it's going due to that spectacular ending!My problems weren't grammatical, it was the actual story. Literally, for 60% of the book, you have just been introduced to tons of characters and they are just doing normal, everyday stuff.At about 50% in, I was thinking, "What in the hell is the actual STORY???"...these people are just doing things. Then the last 35% of the book, it got really good and had some brutal action.And it did end on a note, that definitely sets up immediately book 2. And I finally knew the characters and what was going on.It was interesting enough to me, to definitely want to finish the trilogy. And I believe after I get the whole story, I have a feeling that this could be, possibly, a 4-star trilogy.... don't let me down book 2!!!3.5 stars

I wasn't sure about this one by the summary blurb, but I've read over half the first book and it is quite intriguing. There's some depth to the story and characters; it isn't nearly as predictable as many stories. Yes, some of the main characters are difficult to love, but so it is in real life no? They have layers and history, as does the setting and story.Edited to add: having read all three books now, I feel quite privileged to have found these gems and enjoyed them. We got this series for our 12 year old daughter, because she loves cats. She can not keep her hands of these books! And to tell you this is our child, who disliked to read! She goes to bed, and just before I turn in, I peek into her room, only to find her reading her Warriors books with a flashlight.She loved all of the new cat characters as well as clans, introduced in this series. This is the third series we HAD to get for her, because she was bugging us, we needed to buy these for her, she was on the last pages of her last book.She also assigns the charters from the Warriors book to our family members, herself included.I hope Erin Hunter never stops writing these![...]. No, I don't get any money, but it will let me know, I am not wasting my time writing them :-)

My 11 year old granddaughter is a huge fan of the Warriors series. I've bought every collection for her and she reads them quickly. This series helped convert her from a game addict to an avid reader! She no longer brings her games when she visits, and she always has a book or two with her. I love to hear the enthusiasm in her voice when she relates the stories of the clans of cats in the Warriors series. When she isn't reading the books, she's sketching the characters. I've only read two of the books from the series, but I found them to be very creative and engaging. I fully understand why she is hooked. It has been so nice to see this change in her, and I'll gladly continue buying the books as long as Erin Hunter keeps publishing them!

My 10 year old son spent all of the money he received for his year-end straight 'A' report card to buy all of the Warriors' sets. He loves them! I, too, am reading them (52 years old and much more emotional...I cry at least once a book). He has started sharing his Warriors' books with classmates and the books are receiving high ratings from them, as well. I have recommended the Survivor series (dogs) to a classmate's mom who was having trouble getting her son to read (their 5th grade class is required to read a half hour each week day and one weekend day).These books grab your attention and keep it, to the point of not wanting to put them down. We even think of our cats differently now :-).Authors, Thank you so much for sharing your talents! We would love to see a movie or TV series, as well.All of the books sets that were ordered arrived on time (even the pre-ordered ones) and in new condition. VERY satisfied with the entire experience.

My daughter bought this when she was reading Eclipse from The Power of Three, so it took her about a month and a half to get to these books. When she finally got to the problem, it was too late to return the set. On the cover of The Last Hope, on the bottom front is a 1 inch tear. It's a great series and always keeps her interested, but that one tear was her only problem (it was there when they wrapped it in plastic.) If she could give 4 1/2 stars, she would.

My 11 year old daughter is in love with all things Warriors! I am so thankful for this series because it has really gotten her into reading! I love them because they are real stories with happiness, romance, jealousy, politics, as well as sadness. She laughs and she cries. Oh and she already loves CATS so this was purrfect for her!

My son is OBSESSED with these books. He will read a book a day, sometimes more and begs me to buy the next set. Going from being a child I had to force to read for 30 min a day (or read to him) to this is absolutely amazing!As a parent, I like that the books are easy reading, and have elementary level plots. I know my son has been in tears a few times when characters were killed off, but none of the scenes are overly dramatic or violent. Just a sensitive kiddo.We will be buying this series until we have acquired them all.

My daughter loves, loves, loves this series. Read 30+ books in the Warriors series from the library over the past several years & my daughter continues to love them so much she wanted to own them. So we now own all 4 series plus all the special editions. It's fantasy. It's relationships. It's drama. It's humor. It's love. It's loss. It's cruelty. It's kindness. It's basic real life but with cats. So it's not only entertaining, it's educational.

My daughter wasn't the fondest of reading but she liked animals. I figured this would maybe jog her interest and I was relieved to find out that I was right. She couldn't put these down once she got started. It relieved me as a parent because I believe literacy is so important. About the Author

Fal Allen started brewing professionally in 1988 for Redhook Brewery in Seattle, Wash. In 1990, he moved to Pike Place Brewery where he was the head brewer for eight years. In 1999, he was awarded the Brewers Association's Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation and Achievement in Craft Brewing. He took over as the general manager at Anderson Valley Brewing Company in Northern California in 2000. Starting in 2005 he did a five year stint as brewmaster for Archipelago Brewing (a division of Asia Pacific Breweries) in Singapore, before returning to Anderson Valley as Brewmaster in 2010. Allen's writing credits include Gose, co-authoring Barley Wine, a four-part series on Microbiology and lab work in Brewing Techniques and more than 40 articles in American Brewer, The New Brewer, Zymurgy, MBAA Technical Quarterly, Celebrator, Malt Advocate, and other publications. Amazon book. Read it the day it got to me

Well written and informative

It's rife with explanatory figures and pictures that serve to clarify points and/or instruct would-be brewers; the history (what Allen could accumulate, from what I gather) is lovingly presented on the front end of the book and points out the unique and peculiar path that the Gose has taken to its current iteration.There's a ton of (presumably invaluable aggregated) information on how to go about creating a Gose (along with numerous recipes), and you're littered with suggestions if you wish to take slight divergences on getting your final product (e.g. how/when to sour the beer), which may be backed up by Allen with scientific data, stories regarding trial and error, or a bit of both.It'll even tell you how to pour one, and what kind of glass to use.Food history is an awesome subgenre, and this book is a deserving addition to the collection. I was already a fan of the Gose, so this makes me a lot of things---appreciative, wowed, and, most importantly, thirsty.Many thanks to NetGalley and Brewers Publications for the advance copy.

I worked with the author, Fal, and I can tell you the man knows his stuff. His knowledge comes shining through to you on the pages of his new book. Fal is the brewer for Anderson Valley Brewing Company and, with Fal's help, they brought the Gose style back into fashion. If you want to learn everything about Gose, then this is the book for you, coming straight from the horses mouth.

I got a copy of this book from NetGalley. I decided to read this book because I'm trying to learn a lot about beer and alcohol because I find it interesting. Sadly I did not enjoy this book.The one thing I did find interesting about this book is all the different beer terminology and the basics of how they are made. I didn't really know more about them before reading the book. But that's about all that I found interesting. The writing style was super dry and boring, I couldn't keep my mind on the story and found myself skimming a lot. Gose had a lot of historical information, and if the book had been shorter I think it could have been more interesting. In the end I gave the book 1 star on Goodreads.Â

The author paid special tribute to a distinguished class of beer while tracing it back to its birthplace. The subject of this book, Gose, the beer of legend, goes way back into the foothills of Germany some 1,000 years ago, fittingly, in a town called Goslar. Dated sources indicated that the process of brewing beer then was not as refined as it is today. That comes as no surprise. Oh, how those poor Germans must have suffered.The subsequent history of Gose from its very beginnings to present day were clearly defined. This well-written book came with many illustrations and made for an interesting read.
