This is a review from the standpoint of a travel guide enthusiast. If you love the NYT 36 hours then go ahead and get it but if your looking for an actual travel guide this review is for you. The title should read: "Young Hipsters Guide To Alcoholism And Pedantry." This book is a good guideline for an itinerary but nothing more. I got it for its coffee table flair really. Anyone who actually follows these itineraries must be dead for the amount of sugar, alcohol and comfort food it has you consume at the expense of seeing real sites. It's not a travel guide at all. It is exactly what it said: the NYT's list of what it's editors and writers would do on their weekends off down to the hour. So you see the type of crowd it draws and you get the sense that the only thing it recommends is itineraries for the overly touristy type or people obsessed with looking cool and fashionable rather than experiencing a city. I love DK eyewitness guides over this but the book looks great and enticing on a table or shelf and is a great read for a tipsy guest who needs some perusing time before he plans his next social move at your house. Otherwise, as a personal read to spark the traveling bug in us all, it falls flat many times making the itineraries sound boring with poor choices of photos that make you glad you have used up all your vacation days already or happy your not traveling to said place. You find this out by checking the itinerary for your own city to find how it sounds like the worst way to spend 36 hours in "_____ City." Some itineraries are great but then again, you didn't buy this book for just some itineraries; you were hoping it would have a great aid in making a short weekend entertaining at all the locations in the US instead of thinking that the best weekend that a location has to offer is candy stores, cocktails and overhyped restaurants. 2 stars for table flair, 1 star for substance and an aid in traveling.

This is fantastic and makes me so excited to travel! It is a beautiful book, well organized with pictures and colored tabs for the different regions of the states. Having lived in a few different major cities, I can say that it definitely includes the hidden gems that you wouldn't get from normal travel guides or just searching online.

I've bought multiple copies of this book after discovering it on my sister's coffee table! It is a great gift for couples, newlyweds, or anybody who loves to travel. It is my go-to for quick weekend getaways, and I also see it as sort of a "challenge" to see if we can knock everything off, and not get distracted by the less significant attractions.

The design of this book is awesome. The places are described in detail, and a good plan for the 36 hour trip to wherever you decide to go gives many options. The only problem I have with this book is that it makes me want to quit my job and travel around the nation!

I love reading this column in the Times. While realistically, you may forget to consult the book before a big trip - or some of the recs may get out of date - I still love cozying up on the couch and reading and dreaming about cities I want to visit. I think it's one of those great coffee table books (i love the whimsical illustrations too) to have around to peruse every once in a while :) And, if you remember to consult it before travel, the recommendations are usually very good.

This book is so cool! It is sorted by region, so when you’re feeling adventurous you just go to the section you want to explore. There are several cities in each area ranging from touristy places to places off the beaten path. Suggestions for food, lodging, and activities (again- some touristy and others not).

This turned out to be a much larger tome than I expected - I guess I should have paid attention to the number of pages. So, it's not a book you'll slip into your carryon - get your info out of the book ahead of time and definitely leave it home! Lots of great ideas for weekend trips and for how to squeeze in the quality experiences in a short time.

This is a great compilation of weekend trip suggestions for areas all over this great country of ours. My wife and I plan to use it extensively starting next year when we are both retired and doing several travel trips a year. In reading about the places which I am already familiar, there seems to be a mix of "tourist" sites to see along with some "off the beaten path" sites which tells me the book will be very helpful when traveling and will give us the opportunity to see some of the stuff everyone sees and other things not everyone does. I cannot wait to get on the road with the book.
