Review

"This is a much needed book — especially now."—NPR“After spending years compiling a list of 50 of the world’s worst inventions, [Offit] conducted his own sad version of March Madness to whittle it down to just a handful of finalists…all have proved to be disastrous for human health."—The Washington Post"A fascinating and sometimes shocking look at how science can sometimes lead to disaster." —Booklist"In warning the public of pseudoscientific danger, Offit urges the public to examine available data; beware of quick fixes, fads, and charismatic health gurus; and understand that every advance comes at a price." —Publishers Weekly"Another rousing, pull-no-punches piece from a physician set on educating the public about the fallibility of scientists." —Kirkus Reviews

The seven stories are about:1. Opium and opioids (“God’s Own Medicine”)2. Oleomargarine and trans fats (“The Great Margarine Mistake”)3. Nitrogen fertilizers and ammonium nitrate. (“Blood from Air”)4. Eugenics (“America’s Master Race”)5. Lobotomies (“Turning the Mind Inside Out”)6. Rachel Carson and DDT (“The Mosquito Liberation Front”)7. Linus Pauling and vitamin C; Peter Duesberg and AIDs; Luc Montagnier and the antibiotic “cure” for autism (“Nobel Prize Disease”)Additionally there is an eighth chapter entitled “Learning from the Past” which is about the MMR vaccine and autism, e-cigarettes, Bisphenol A, cancer screening, and GMOs.One of the themes in the book is the hubris of some very famous scientists who won Nobel prizes and then went on to do and/or promote some very bad science mainly because they could not admit they were wrong. But the real villain in these pages is not the science itself; it is instead the failure of people in the political arena, in the media and even in the medical and scientific journals to weigh the evidence properly thereby lending support to the bad science. Dr. Offit indicts the Environmental Protection Agency (p. 188); Time Magazine, Newsweek, the New York Times (p. 145); the Journal of the American Medical Association, the American Journal of Public Health, the New England Journal of Medicine (p. 124) and others (see page 226). Naturally these mistakes from prestigious organizations are reflective of earlier more ignorant times. Today most are much more thorough before passing judgement. However Offit warns near the end of the book that new mistakes by currently prestigious institutions will be made.Offit, who is a doctor of medicine and a professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania as well as the author of more than 160 papers in medical and scientific journals, writes in a clear and readable style that is packed with concrete detail and facts, especially historical facts, some of which are appalling and horrific. Here are some tidbits reflective of Offit’s engaging style:“Francis Galton, Charles Davenport, Harry Laughlin, Madison Grant, and Adolf Hitler all shared several features: All were, by their definition, Nordic; all believed that Nordics should procreate freely while non-Nordics should be prevented from procreating; and all were childless.” (p. 122)Today’s view of lobotomies includes the comical: the “Frontal Lobotomy” is a drink made with amaretto, Chambord and pineapple juice; a joke, “I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy” (from Tom Waits); and a T-shirt with a picture of George W. Bush and the words, “Ask me about my lobotomy.”In regard to Rachel Carson and her imagined Eden-like world before pesticides, Offit quotes William Cronin: “It is not hard to reach the conclusion that the only way human beings can hope to live naturally on earth is to follow the hunter-gatherers back into a wilderness Eden and abandon virtually everything that civilization has given us.” (p. 186)Writing about Linus Pauling and other august scientists who couldn’t bring themselves to admit they were wrong, Offit offers: “When anybody contradicted Einstein, he thought it over, and if he found he was wrong, he was delighted, because he felt he had escaped from an error.” (p. 197-198)The essence of Offit’s argument in this book is this quote from page 212: “…all scientists—no matter how accomplished or well known—should have unassailable data to support their claims, not just a compelling personality, an impressive shelf of awards, or a poetic writing style.” --Dennis Littrell, author of “Hard Science and the Unknowable”

Pasteurization, antiseptics, gunpowder, paper, the screw, vaccines, the theory of evolution, the double-helix of DNA. "What are the most important things science has done for humanity" is a pretty common trope in popular science writing. Scientism is fun and pedagogical, despite the predictable hyperbole; we can't help but marvel at innovations and the science that has made them possible, even if we tend to ignore the failures that accrue along the way. But take that question, turn it on its head, and open the door to uneasiness, rancor and disappointment: "What are the worst things science has ever accomplished" is a thorny question to ask: it demands a type of self-awareness that rarely rises to the occasion.Paul Offit's answer to the question is somber, constructive, and close enough to provoke a little fear for what we are capable of doing to one another in the name of war, uncertainty, ideology, incompetence, ego and hope. Each of the seven fables of Pandora's Lab draws on a deep psychological feature, flaw, of human nature. The first fable shows how greed plus aversion to pain fed of each other to turn opium, that herb Sumerians called "the plant of joy", into the deadly OxyContin -a drug that draws more deaths than car accidents in the US. Offit's description of how the painkiller epidemic came to be is enraging, as it forced into alignment the worst incentives from the medical profession, pharmaceutical industry, media and regulatory agencies. The second fable adds advocacy to the mix, showing how health activism facilitated the introduction of deadly partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (trans fats) into world diet due to some well-intentioned policy that, trying to eliminate one evil, invited a worse one in. The next fable draws on the unintended consequences of new technologies, showing how synthetic fertilizers made possible the demographic explosion of world population during the XX century, but at the hefty price of environmental degradation and its inventor's dwellings into the origins of chemical warfare.Of all the fables in Pandora's Lab, perhaps because it resonates to current sentiments in developed countries towards migration, none is more gripping than the history of eugenics -an ideological virus that took hold of some of the brightest minds in biology, statistics and law, and through the zealotry of people like Madison Grant, lent the base for forced sterilization in the US and the horrors perpetrated by the Third Reich. Bad science can turn a political cause into an unfathomable weapon, or as Offit puts it: beware the zeitgeist. The next three fables show how desperation for medical treatments can lead to unspeakable things being perpetrated on the weakest among us, as shown by Walter Freeman's indiscriminate applications of transorbital lobotomy, and how the radical application of the cautionary principle on DDT hampered the fight against malaria. The last fable speaks about the dangers of authority disguised as science, retelling how brilliant scientists like Linus Pauling, Peter Duesberg and Luc Montagnier lost their way and recurred to conspiracy theories to back their theories when evidence went the other way.In the epilogue, Offit writes: "Although we hold on to the hope of a better life through science, we need to approach all scientific advances cautiously and with eyes wide open" (p. 241). All fables point to the disastrous outcomes that follow the coincidence of greed and need. The dangers of listening to the loudspeaker of ignorant activism. How political environment that sees a new technology being born matters. How our hope for easy solutions to complex problems is misguided. Why we can rid ourselves from parroquialism us-vs-the. And, worse of all, how our deference to authority can turn science into the weapon of the whimsical.Hopefully now we’ve learned the lessons.

I just finished the book "Pandora's Lab", and I loved it!I buy a lot of books, but don't read many of them right away. This book was an exception - I was engrossed in it immediately, and couldn't wait to pick it up again.I love the way the author put scientific discovery in the context of history. I'm amazed at the depth of his historical and scientific knowledge.I knew something of the history of the poppy, but the author's treatment of the opioid crisis and history was masterful, and put it all into perspective in terms of human health. Each chapter is extremely well researched, and provides numerous and rich insights into the consequences of informing massive, life-changing, and sometimes planetary level policy decisions, from arrogance, or from willfully ignored settled science. All of the stories have one or more protagonists who tragically pursue action without proof, leading to needless, tragic, and often monumental human suffering and death as a result of their hubris. In these trying times, where conspiracy theories and propaganda abound in untold quantity, this book is a breath of fresh air. I hope you read it, and then pass it on to your children to read.

#135,400 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Beautifully written and so realistically believable it was difficult to put down. Piper Lawson is an amazing writer and her series of books (Travesty) and all her characters have captivated from book 1 to book 5...gotta read.

4,5 starsI received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntarily, honest review of it.Great news for the readers who have been following the ‘Travesty’ series. We finally get Kent’s story! Yes!!! Kent has been part of the ‘Travesty’ series from the very beginning. He was the easy going, fun, loyal friend throughout the series. Always there when someone needed help. I have been looking forward to reading his story for a long time now and it was definitely worth the wait because Dahlia is a great girl, perfect for Kent.I really enjoyed this friends to lovers story. I knew from previous book that I have read that the writer Piper Lawson writes sweet, easy to read (but still steamy) romance stories and this one was the same. Kent may act like a ‘playboy’ but he’s a great friend to have. Something that Dahlia can confirm. She only knows Kent for a year but in that year they became great friends. Whenever Kent comes to LA, they meet up. But this time something is changing between them and both aren’t sure if that is good thing or a bad thing. Because one thing that Kent doesn’t do, is relationships. And that’s just something that Dahlia is looking for. But once you crossed the line between friendship to lovers, it is hard to get hard to get back to just being friends. So, what happens then? The story is told in both POV’s. ‘Satisfaction’ is a novella long story. I really loved both Kent and Dahlia character. They were loyal to their friends and they matched each other in important ways. It was great seeing the other couples back from the previous books.‘Satisfaction’ is a great read.

Another fun visit with the cast of Travesty. This time, Jordan, Lex & Ava are entrusting Dahlia with an important magazine interview and photo spread. Her success ensures she will be the store manager but there is one problem, Dahlia gets ‘stage fright’ in these types of situations. How will she conquer her fears and succeed? Kent is visiting LA and hopes to make an impression at the surfing competition with his boards otherwise his business is going nowhere. Now Kent and Dahlia have had sparks but have kept each other in the friend zone. When they need each other’s help to succeed, will they realize that they should be more than friends? I love this series and enjoyed the push-pull between Dahlia and Kent as they fought their attraction but well, then finally found love. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

SatisfactionTravesty #5Piper Lawson🌟🌟🌟🌟⭐️I believe 2019 is the year of freaking awesome books. I’ve had a 100% strike rate so far and Satisfaction is no different. I loved Kent and Dahlia. Like the story, their easy going friendship turns to sexy hotness. Although the story is a novella it was a great read filled to the brim.Kent is the smart sexy business man turned blonde god surfer. His visit to LA should be simple, but running into Dahlia whom he has listed for only makes his week even more full on. As new store manager of Travesty she is thrown in the deep end when Ava, Lex and Jordan all go away she is left to be the voice of the company to a new interview. So with a pact to help each other out, they fall for that unmistakable pull that’s always been there. Working together is one thing but falling in love only makes leaving harder.Satisfaction is Another great story to the Travesty family, if you haven’t read this series get into it, Piper has created an awesome series filled with everything from friendship, love, loss Highs, lows. Each story shows off a new couple.

This is super sexy! I loved returning to this fabulous world Piper has created. She really writes great romance between her characters--and I love the strength of her female heroes and how that's never diminished by the hero. The synopsis is slightly deceptive in the sense that there isn't a whole lot of scenes regarding the "one-week deal" but I was ok with that because we get these other great scenes between Kent and Dahlia.Would I have loved a full novel? You bet! I think you'll get more out of this book if you've read the full novels in the series because you will see how this romance has been building since the start. A lot of things are assumed here (based on your knowledge of the previous books) but I think this novella serves as a special treat for fans of the series---or a great way for new fans to get excited about diving into this fantastic series!**I received an ARC/review copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.**

Book 5 in Piper Lawson’s Travesty series is a wonderful 150 page friends to lovers novella featuring Travesty’s LA Store Assistant Manager Dahlia, and Jordan’s friend (super sexy surfer dude), Kent. A lovely story with an adorably cute couple, who, on paper are complete opposites, but in reality they’re meant to be. Both secretly crushing on the other, both helping the other in their career, both unwilling to put themselves out there. I loved the story, the writing and the characters. This book is best enjoyed having read the previous Travesty books, it can however be read as a standalone. I loved it. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review.

This was a fun and sassy novella.Easy, quick reading that brought back all the times I stayed at The Beach House and went surfing at Huntington Beach.Dal (Dahlia) is working in fashion in LA.Kent (is such a Clark Kent) is trying to sell his surf boards. He keeps things black and white with women. He keeps friends as friends.Oh, its going to get a bit messy and so much fun when they decide to help each other out.Really captures the SoCal vibe.Recommend.I voluntarily reviewed this book.

All of the negative reviews here are by JW's. This is a good book, and although the common sense and theological arguments as to how to go about showing the JW's that their religion is in fact a blind religion and cult, are left out...that is not what this book is for. It clearly demonstrates that the JW's cover up their lies and inconsistencies with "new light" so that you can see over time how their claims have changed with the culture. Their recognition of past mistakes, are like layers of an onion you can peel back to get to the origin of this confused and misguided cult, that this book helps people see. Thanks for putting this all together!

The author has researched her subject well and provided references. I purchased this book as a reference book and I am not interested in being preached to. She restrained herself fairly well and I do recommend this book.

Thank you for writing this book!!!! Useful as a reference for the publications mentioned within the book...

Very thorough! Loved it!

Very informative information. A great book and the price is affordable. There are numerous publication and books publish by the Watch Tower and Tracy society but the problem is getting a hold of one because they are rare and hard to find. The best thing about this book is that it have photocopies of the original document from the original Jehovah witness books in one place.

This is a long and comprehensive review. If you find these facts interesting, you should purchase this book. The evidence against the Watchtower, published by the Watchtower... it's all here in black and white! (please read on... you will be amazed)There are currently over 7 million reported members of the Jehovah's Witness religion, but surprisingly few of them are aware of their origins, or how much their beliefs have changed over the last 135 years. If you have ever spoken to a JW about religion, you have no doubt heard about the false teachings and pagan traditions that have pervaded all of Christendom today. As a Bible student, you would be encouraged to examine the origins of pagan celebrations like Christmas, birthdays, and Easter, along with the symbols used today, such as the cross. They are so proud of their knowledge about origins of things you might even find harmless, such as merely saying "bless you," after someone sneezes, or "good luck" to a friend. These utterances should be avoided, due to their origins and true nature... yet...Instead of being curious about the origins of their own religion, or examining the "truth," the followers are discouraged from investigating their own past. Ask a Jehovah's Witness about the palace in San Diego, once called Beth Sarim, built by Judge Rutherford. They will not look at any evidence about this great mansion, built to house the resurrected Kings of the Old Testament. They were supposed to return in 1925, but when they did not, Beth Sarim became a luxury residence for the earthly leader of the Jehovah's Witness society. Your JW friend will deny this bit of history, even though it is well-documented.One thing the Watchtower loves to do, is see itself in print. This is coming back to bite them today, in this mass information age.Their current belief is that Jesus came to begin his reign on earth in 1914, and appointed the Jehovah's Witnesses as God's exclusive channel to the world (see Watchtower, July 2013). This appointment occurred in 1919, after Christ spent 5 years "inspecting" the world, and finding the Bible Students to be fit to dispense all spiritual food until He returns (or arrives or comes) again. The Watchtower Society now has taken full control of the lives of millions, who sadly are unaware of the true nature of the organization they serve. The chapters focus on 4 main points. Each statement includes a reference to a photocopy of the actual printed publication from the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society (formerly known as Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence). Here are just a few of the claims they have made, that are listed in this very interesting book.1. A Busy Religion• people must "come to Jehovah's organization for salvation." (Watchtower 1981)• JW's are discouraged from associating with non-JW friends, participating in after school activities or sports, and furthering their education by going to college (multiple references 1962, 1983, 1986)• If a certain JW fails to follow the guidelines set up by the organization, he is then subject to "disfellowshipping" in which the individual is shunned by all his friends and relatives in the organization (Watchtower 1981)2. Historical Background(Lots of strange teachings from Russell, along with some truths that have changed over the century)• Russell studied with a splinter group of Second Adventists (proclaimers 1993)• Russell used the symbol of the sun god Ra on the cover of his books• Russell used the Masonic Knights Templar logo of the Cross and Crown on his issues of Zion's Watchtower• Russell warned them to "beware of forming a visible organization." (1895)* Russell taught that Christians are "divine beings... Gods"• Russell taught that Jesus should be worshipped and that he is not Michael the archangel (1891)• Russell approved of celebrating birthdays, Christmas, holidays, and joining the military, as long as you didn't shoot anybody (1898)• White skin is better than black skin• The shape of one's brain determines his responsiveness to God• Jehovah governs the universe from the star "Alcyone" in the Pleiades constellation3. The New World Translation of the Holy ScripturesIn 1919, Rutherford took over, and took the remaining followers and called them Jehovah's Witnesses. Being directed as God's holy channel, there should have been no more errors. In 1950, the Watchtower came out with a new translation of the bible. None of the authors or translators will take credit for this version of the Holy Scriptures. When interviewed in 1954, Governing Body member Fred Franz claimed to have checked the translation against the original Hebrew in the Old Testament. Upon further questioning, he admitted that he did not speak Hebrew. There is a transcript of this interview included in the book. There is also a section of this chapter, which compares the original Hebrew text, alongside the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. There are some places where words have been changed to support their doctrine, instead of to reflect the original text of the scriptures. They are shown in photocopies of the original documents. The Jehovah's Witnesses came out with a new translation of the New World Translation in the fall of 2013. This new Bible is currently available in English. The original 1950 version is available in many languages.4. The Watchtower Prophet• 1914: "... the battle of the great day of God Almighty, which will end in AD 1914...• 1915: "... the battle of the great day of God Almighty, which will end in AD 1915...• 1918: "... in the year 1918, when God destroys the churches wholesale and the church members by the millions...• 1925: "... 1925 shall mark the resurrection of the faithful worthies of old ... millions now living will never die• 1940's: "It would therefore appear that there is no reasonable or Scriptural injunction to bring children into the world immediately before Armageddon, where we are now• 1975: "Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world's end.Watchtower has predicted the end of the world on several dates: 1914, 1915, 1918, 195, 1940's, 1975. Does that make them a false prophet? This book contains a long section exploring this question.Jesus did warn us that in the last days, false prophet will arise and claim that He came back when He did not:"Then if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Christ,' or 'There!' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the chosen ones." - Matthew 24:23-24Jehovah's Witnesses presently believe that Jesus' presence began in 1914 and that he has been reigning invisibly in the heavens ever since. However, from 1879-1929, they proclaimed that Christ's presence began in 1874.Every quote and claim made in this book, is backed by a photocopy of the original document published by the Watchtower. There are many interesting quotes, including confessions by former leaders, that errors and even false prophecies had been made.I recommend this book to anyone interested in facts about the Watchtower. It will probably not help you in reaching any active Jehovah's Witness, however. They do not wish to see the truth about the "Truth." For help in reaching a loved one who is being controlled by this destructive religion, I recommend Steve Hassan's book: Freedom of Mind.

It's alright. Need a magnifying glass to see the copies. Could have done a little better, but I knew it before I ordered the book. It is legible.

Vary, vary sparse information. Look elsewhere for a proper treatment of this important religion.

Written in 1992 this book has aged extremely poorly. The authors rail journey consists of remarkably little rail travel as war disrupts the lines and his plans. He determines, from this experience that Southern Africa is a mess and will probably never get better. But it did. Despite the crushing burden of HIV, the tide is turning on disease, there are no wars in the region South of Congo, and as of April every country in the region except for Swaziland will have a leader with fewer than five years tenure.

The premise behind Miles Bredin's trip, to travel across Southern Africa by rail, was a great idea, but he never even came close to fulfilling the subtitle of the book "A Rail Journey from Angola to Mozambique". Travelling as a journalist, he doesn't seem to spend a lot of time filing reports as much as he does looking for a good place for a drink, or begging for free plane trips from aid agencies. He mentions that he had trouble receiving compensation from the paper he was supposed to be reporting for... maybe that's indicative of his reporting efforts. He actually doesn't board a train until page 130, and its in Zambia, the only country that managed to avoid any sort of civil war through the present.Granted, nobody could travel in Angola during the civil war, and the resurgence after the 1992 elections, and he does make it from Zambia, through Zimbabwe and Mozambique, but anyone could do that when the countries are peaceful. All Bredin does in this book is remark on the poverty of the people, how corrupt the governments are, and how aid agencies are almost useless, and offers no solutions himself. But there are a million better written books about Africa, and he adds little to the subject of Africa's poverty, and why its so bad, and who is ultimately to blame, except to suggest.... America! He says very little of British and French colonialism and neo-colonialism as a cause, but put lots of blame on the USA. And its particularly ironic that Bredin uses the rail system as a basis of his observations of the problems of Africa; the rail system built by the British and French colonialists (and that includes tracks in Angola, Mozambique, and Zaire, nominally under control of Portugal and Belgium) were meant first and foremost to extract resources from the colonies and send them to the colonial powers as efficiently as possible. He never mentions this fact at all.The worst thing for me about this book was the usual British journalist bias about what is in reality the relatively minor role of the US in the problems he writes of in this book. The recent cold war struggle between the USA and USSR is blamed for all of Africa's problems, but they didn't begin to use African countries as pawns until independence, and the specific problems of Angola and Mozambique started well before 1975. European Colonialism is hardly mentioned as the MAJOR cause of Africa's present problems. The USA deserves criticism for a lack of involvement in African affairs, but are hardly a primary cause of the continent's problems. European Colonialism is the number one cause for certain. The last chapter of the book contains these crazy statements (all in one paragraph!): "The Americans have become an international menace..." and "The former Soviet Union was even worse." and worst of all, he writes "Britain, France and Belgium are scarcely blameless but this is not the point. It is easy to prove that the west has harmed and continues to harm Africa but Africa has also damaged itself." So there you go, Africa is a disaster because the USA, USSR and the Africans themselves are really to blame! Don't waste your time with this book.

A Lucky Child: A Memoir of Surviving Auschwitz as a Young Boy, by Thomas Buergenthal

From Publishers Weekly

Not many children who entered Auschwitz lived to tell the tale. The American judge at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Czechoslovakia-born Buergenthal, is one of the few. A 10-year-old inmate in August 1944 at Birkenau, Buergenthal was one of the death camp's youngest prisoners. He miraculously survived, thanks, among others, to a friendly kapo who made him an errand boy. Buergenthal's authentic, moving tale reveals that his lifelong commitment to human rights sprang from the ashes of Auschwitz. 16 b&w photos, 1 map. From Booklist

You think you’ve heard it all: the roundups, deportations, transports, selections, hard labor, death camps (“That was the last time I saw my father”), crematoriums, and the rare miracle of survival. But this one is different. The clear, nonhectoring prose makes Buergenthal’s personal story––and the enduring ethical questions it prompts––the stuff of a fast, gripping read. Five years old in Czechoslovakia at the start of World War II, Buergenthal remembers being crowded into the ghetto and then, in 1944, feeling “lucky” to escape the gas chambers and get into Auschwitz, where he witnessed daily hangings and beatings, but with the help of a few adults, managed to survive. In a postwar orphanage, he learned to read and write but never received any mail, until in a heartrending climax, his mother finds him. In 1952, he immigrated to the U.S., and now, as human-rights lawyer, professor, and international judge, his childhood’s moral issues are rooted in his daily life, his tattooed number a reminder not so much of the past as of his obligation, as witness and survivor, to fight bigotry today. --Hazel Rochman

I think it is my duty, not so much as a German (born to non-Nazis in 1939) but as a human being, to keep reading Holocaust memoirs. I cannot read too many in a row, but I read several every year.Yes, Thomas Buergenthal was “A Lucky Child”; otherwise, he would not have lived to write this memoir. But as Ruth Klueger points out in her philosophical Holocaust memoir “Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered”, the luck of the Holocaust survivors does not diminish the dimension of the crime, and the survivors cannot be used as “credits” to be subtracted from the great “debit”.Thomas Buergenthal’s story lets you shudder at how much repeated miraculous luck was necessary for his survival. Religious people will probably replace the term “luck” with other terms. Buergenthal, however, is not religious and attributes his survival to luck. All Holocaust memoirs (i.e., those that stick to the truth and don’t mix facts with fiction) are worthwhile reading, but one cannot possibly read them all. So I try to find those memoirs that are well written and provide some more insights than others. “A Lucky Child” is certainly one of them. Each Holocaust survivor has his or her own story, the story of an individual experience. And while the dreadful living- and dying conditions in concentration camps and on death marches in all of these memoirs are quite alike, the personal experiences differ. What also differs is how the survivors and those in their surroundings deal with their ordeals. What makes this book especially interesting is that the memoir continues after the war and tells about the author’s adult life. Thomas Buergenthal was able to overcome his, quite understandable, initial hate for Germans. He became a human rights activist and a lawyer specialized on international law, dealing with prosecuting war crimes and human rights violations.I strongly recommend the reading of this book. It should, along with some other Holocaust memoirs, be mandatory reading in schools all over the world.Other highly recommendable Holocaust memoirs are:Elie Wiesel’s “Night”Primo Levi’s “Survival in Auschwitz” (orig. title: “If This is a Man”) and its sequel “The Reawakening”—See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Ruth Klueger’s “Still Alive: A Girlhood Remembered”See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Peter Kubicek’s “Memories of Evil”See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...andTema Merback’s “In the Face of Evil”, based on her mother’s Holocaust survivalSee my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...One should also not miss “The Complete Maus”, by Art Spiegelman

This is the first book about the Holocaust that I have read.It will evoke more emotions than you can deal with at times. As a mother my heart turned to stone against the people that wouldcause harm to a child..Just as quickly I wanted to reach through time and snatch Thomas awayand protect him.It shook me to the very foundation I was planted on.Thank you Thomas for the courage it took for you to relive the horrors of the Holocaust.I am in awe of you and all the survivors. We are so lucky to live in America and we take for granted all the freedoms that we have here.I wish everyone would read this book.

The first 2/3 of this book was interesting, with a different take than most holocaust books I have read. It was here that the book should have ended, and gotten 4 stars from me. The last third of the book was rambling opinions on the state of the world, then a re-hash of the story itself.

I've read many books on this subject but not one like this. Mr. Buergenthal's tone is different from the beginning. He relates his experiences in such a matter of fact way that at times he seems to have distanced himself completely from the events. It's almost told as if he's telling someone else's story. In spite of this, the story is well written.

A great memoir by Thomas Buergenthal. Very easy to read and entertaining. I wanted to keep reading and not put the book down in order to find out what would happen next. The memoir definitely met my expectations (and was a bit eerie at times since I recently visited Sachsenhausen). Buergenthal's journey is an inspirational real life story about the human spirit and its strengths in difficult times, family ties, forgiveness, and beating the odds trying to make a difference in the world. Truly an example to follow. No matter what barriers are set before someone, Buergenthal demonstrates that anything can be overcome with determination, hard work, and a little bit of luck.

First let me share my disappointment that IS and I'M publishers spurned this book because Auschwitz no longer "sold". I encourage the reading this memoir and reflection of this survivor. I especially urge my Norwegian cousins, who must have enjoyed Nansen's Tommy to do so. Survival stories should always sell even when they are not as well written as this.

Such an amazing and powerful story! I am always humbled by the challenges so many faced at this time in our world's history. I am also empowered by their determination, hope, and sometimes great fortune in withstanding those challenges. This is story well-worth reading.

GREAT BOOK! Well written and very detailed without being oppressive with details. It was an “easy read” and quick to get through. Very captivating story and one of true triumph of a dark time in history. This was my vacation “beach read” and I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in stories of the holocaust and it’s surviors.
