I think it is my duty, not so much as a German (born to non-Nazis in 1939) but as a human being, to keep reading Holocaust memoirs. I cannot read too many in a row, but I read several every year.Yes, Thomas Buergenthal was “A Lucky Child”; otherwise, he would not have lived to write this memoir. But as Ruth Klueger points out in her philosophical Holocaust memoir “Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered”, the luck of the Holocaust survivors does not diminish the dimension of the crime, and the survivors cannot be used as “credits” to be subtracted from the great “debit”.Thomas Buergenthal’s story lets you shudder at how much repeated miraculous luck was necessary for his survival. Religious people will probably replace the term “luck” with other terms. Buergenthal, however, is not religious and attributes his survival to luck.All Holocaust memoirs (i.e., those that stick to the truth and don’t mix facts with fiction) are worthwhile reading, but one cannot possibly read them all. So I try to find those memoirs that are well written and provide some more insights than others. “A Lucky Child” is certainly one of them.Each Holocaust survivor has his or her own story, the story of an individual experience. And while the dreadful living- and dying conditions in concentration camps and on death marches in all of these memoirs are quite alike, the personal experiences differ. What also differs is how the survivors and those in their surroundings deal with their ordeals.What makes this book especially interesting is that the memoir continues after the war and tells about the author’s adult life. Thomas Buergenthal was able to overcome his, quite understandable, initial hate for Germans. He became a human rights activist and a lawyer specialized on international law, dealing with prosecuting war crimes and human rights violations.I strongly recommend the reading of this book. This is the first book about the Holocaust that I have read.It will evoke more emotions than you can deal with at times.As a mother my heart turned to stone against the people that wouldcause harm to a child..Just as quickly I wanted to reach through time and snatch Thomas awayand protect him.It shook me to the very foundation I was planted on.Thank you Thomas for the courage it took for you to relive the horrors of the Holocaust.I am in awe of you and all the survivors.We are so lucky to live in America and we take for granted all the freedoms that we have here.I wish everyone would read this book.

The first 2/3 of this book was interesting, with a different take than most holocaust books I have read. It was here that the book should have ended, and gotten 4 stars from me. The last third of the book was rambling opinions on the state of the world, then a re-hash of the story itself.

I've read many books on this subject but not one like this. Mr. Buergenthal's tone is different from the beginning. He relates his experiences in such a matter of fact way that at times he seems to have distanced himself completely from the events. It's almost told as if he's telling someone else's story. In spite of this, the story is well written.

A great memoir by Thomas Buergenthal. Very easy to read and entertaining. I wanted to keep reading and not put the book down in order to find out what would happen next. The memoir definitely met my expectations (and was a bit eerie at times since I recently visited Sachsenhausen). Buergenthal's journey is an inspirational real life story about the human spirit and its strengths in difficult times, family ties, forgiveness, and beating the odds trying to make a difference in the world. Truly an example to follow. No matter what barriers are set before someone, Buergenthal demonstrates that anything can be overcome with determination, hard work, and a little bit of luck.

First let me share my disappointment that IS and I'M publishers spurned this book because Auschwitz no longer "sold". I encourage the reading this memoir and reflection of this survivor. I especially urge my Norwegian cousins, who must have enjoyed Nansen's Tommy to do so. Survival stories should always sell even when they are not as well written as this.

Such an amazing and powerful story! I am always humbled by the challenges so many faced at this time in our world's history. I am also empowered by their determination, hope, and sometimes great fortune in withstanding those challenges. This is story well-worth reading.

GREAT BOOK! Well written and very detailed without being oppressive with details. It was an “easy read” and quick to get through. Very captivating story and one of true triumph of a dark time in history. This was my vacation “beach read” and I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in stories of the holocaust and it’s surviors.

About the Author

Juan Felipe Herrera is a poet, performance artist, and activist. The son of migrant farmworkers, he was the U.S. Poet Laureate from 2015–2017. He has published more than a dozen collections of poetry and is the author-illustrator of Jabberwalking. He lives in Fresno, California.Lauren Castillo has illustrated many books for children, including Happy Like Soccer by Maribeth Boelts and Yard Sale by Eve Bunting. Lauren Castillo is also the author-illustrator of the Caldecott Honor–winning book Nana in the City. She lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Great book for my daughter's class

The artwork and free-verse poetry in the book tell the story of a young boy who lived in the country and enjoyed picking flowers, tending chickens, spending time dreaming under moonlight, leaves his village of farmworkers, and later enters a school not speaking English. Through each verse he prompts the reader to 'imagine,' but doesn't tell you if you should imagine for yourself or imagine what the boy is thinking. I appreciate this open invitation to make the story your own and the prompts you can have with a child about where to take the conversation. He also starts each prose with 'If I...' which combined could be a great introduction for students to explore poetry and write their own poems.The story is biographical about the author's journey but he doesn't make it about him. He brings a reader along and allows readers to imagine their own journeys to greatness however and whatever it may be. For teachers or adults who share their book with children a little additional research would allow for a deeper conversation about Juan Felipe Herrera's immigrant journey and being named as the 51st Poet Laureate of the United States. But again this book allows that to be a secondary piece of information and allows readers to imagine their own possibilities.The artwork is charming and accompanies the text in a way that brings the story to live but doesn't overwhelm.It was a great book to read with a young elementary school child and one I think we'll read again. I will also add this to a list of books I recommend highlighting authors of color telling their own stories.

This is a departure from Goldworthy's titles that I have read in the past. His triumphs with books like "Pax Romana" and "Augustus" are dense, brilliant, and hundreds of pages long. "Hadrian's Wall" is different. First, it is less than 200 pages in length, inclusive of front and end matter. Next it has pictures and maps throughout that usually appear at the most convenient location in text.Brevity aside, Goldworthy's writing is always superb, and he does not disappoint here. The work is very accessible and readable, yet it provides great detail on the wall, the Roman Army, and Roman Britain as a whole. Moreover, there is no scholar better qualified to discuss the Roman Army than Mr. Goldworthy. The book was a quick and pleasant read that leaves one wanting to visit the wall.

I bought this book because I will be visiting Hadrian's Wall this summer and wanted more background on the topic. Goldsworthy does an excellent job providing a solid and well written history of the wall. I got all of the background information I hoped for and then some. It is not a long book but it is the perfect length for what I wanted. The author does a great job covering the major points with skill. I enjoyed it greatly and found it highly informative.

Having read a good bit about the Roman republic/empire (but not being an expert in any sense of the word), I found this physically small book to be rich in descriptive text regarding one of the Romans' most successful physical/defensive works. I particularly liked the manner in which the author couches clear distinctions between what is known and what can only be surmised from more or less fragmentary evidence.In fact, it's one of those books where one arrives at the end wishing the whole experience could be prolonged...

This is a very impressive little book, w/ fine diagrams and photos. My only complaint is that the fine photos are in black and white rather than in color. Given the spectacular views photographed, the lack of color is very, very regrettable!

I love Roman History. This is quite interesting and the author has put a little humanity into the writing. I am only half through the book but I will finish it.... I had hoped to learn a little more about the IXth legion that supposedly disappeared into the north and was never found.....

I have always been fascinated by Hadrian's Wall and have enjoyed some of Goldsworthy's works. However, I was disappointed with his latest book. In this day and age, why would the publisher choose to print all maps and photographs in black and white??? Also there is a map (for instance on page 16) that includes a legend and words that are almost too small to see, which is also a result of the small size of the book. It is hard to make out topographical landmarks that are mentioned on photographs. The history and text are great in this book, but the poor quality of photographs and maps is a huge disappointment. It is 2018, so why is everything in this book black and white?

Everything you wanted to know about Hadrian's Wall, but if you really want to know about how the Romans really lived and died at that period, read the author's novels about life in those times.

I was part of a one-week dig at South Shields and Hadrian's Wall. This book, with all its excellent detail, has enriched my experience. Now I have a well-researched over-view of the history of the entire Wall and Britain during the Roman occupation.

When I first explored Europe many years ago, I was astounded by the eroticism as well as the preponderance of unembarrassed male nudity in public art and sculpture. The very first time I sauntered along London's Millbank on my way to the Tate Britain Museum, I was confronted by two writhing naked men tying a poor woman to a bull, and then found myself staring up through the leaping legs of another naked man carrying a woman's head! These are the statues that decorate one entrance, The Death Of Dirce and The rescue of Andromeda, which depicts Perseus with Medusa's head. Experiencing these was awesome ( in the literal sense of the word), because not only were they haunting and erotically charged sculptures , but, as I quickly realised,  they were accepted as part of the public art dialogue of a sophisticated culture, two of hundreds of erotically charged publicly naked and semi-naked men throughout great European cities like London and ignored by thousands of commuters each day.  The Death Of Dirce is itself based upon the exquisite classical sculpture, now called The Farnese Bull, itself dating from around 220 AD, on display in Rome. A 16th century pope had acquired it when his men found it while digging around Roman ruins in search of garden decorations , and  Michelangelo evidently turned it into a fountain for the Pope's garden. The Baroque period, and the incorporation of naked, lustful, heroic male dominated classicism into religious art (thanks partly to Medici influence and money), is something that always perplexed me as a child growing up in an austere Catholicism but surrounded by this orgy of imagery. This nudity, captured in realistic painting and sculpture (the photography in its day) was scandalous when first unveiled. But it became highly sought after for church decoration. And it was copied and plagiarised around the world, eventually reaching 20th century Tasmania, where I was confused and aroused by it as a child, whilst the nuns and priests who schooled me, taught  me to be ashamed of my sinful body. It is strange today that we are socialised to feel embarrassment or repulsion at male genitalia, and the portrayal of the naked male as an object of sensuality in art film and photography is judged pejoratively as gay or homoerotic, when this is at odds with the public art which we inherited from the classical tradition, and which was resurrected by Christian Europe in the Renaissance. This was art created when our Roman and Greek predecessors, who we still revere in every other way, worshipped the full beauty of a male as one of the most important subjects of art .  Heroics explores this gap between heroic art and life, using the photo reality and mixing modern and classical references to replicate some of the drama inherent in the original art. Something of my serious political purpose may be subsumed by the resultant theatricality that has about it more of the humorous kitsch surreality of a Fellini set, dispelling any awe I felt from staring up at the very serious sensuality of the statues outside the Tate Britain. But I called the books Heroics for a reason, and I also wanted to satirise the way European men have adorned and mythologised themselves and their physical courage, in art through the centuries.

Although the quality of photography and the calibre of the models was usually good, the settings in which the models posed were too often urban gritty, industrial, graffitti covered scenes. There is nothing heroic about rust belt decay!!! I was looking more for classic beauty. Also, the props, such as hat, helmets, and greaves, looked cheesy. Freeman could use a good production designer.

Another exquisite book from Mr. Freeman. The volume is beautifully printed. The photographs are gorgeous and most are sized to the page. The models are definitely heroic. You will not regret this purchase.

Always waiting for another great book from Freeman. Since seeing his work in the magazine "blue" years ago it has been a pleasure to collect the publication of his work in all formats. Heroics has an edge with the costuming and contemporary locations for his shoots.

Like all the Paul Freeman books, this is beautiful and well-produced, The models are macho and good looking and the use of props and costumes to the nudes makes for a certain piquancy, Not pornographic but definitely erotic.

A fantastic book from this photographer, I look forward to new editions of his works as he is the best since Jim French (Colt Studios).

This book was written to be a companion to the Steven Spielberg Film, Lincoln, currently in theaters. It focuses on the sixteenth president's tumultuous final months in office. Ending slavery was his primary focus. Even if you are not able to go see the movie, you have an abundance of historical detail right in this book.Be advised this is not a comprehensive biography of President Lincoln. It puts a microscope on his struggle to weigh his personal beliefs against presidential duties concerning the slavery issue. The Emancipation Proclamation issued two years earlier only authorized Union soldiers to liberate slaves in the south. A Constitutional amendment was needed to legally end slavery forever in the United States. The book tells us about America during those tumultuous times, Congress, and the people who fought or helped Lincoln.Although intended for young adult readers, the book is well suited for adults as well. Photographs spanning Lincoln's life, speeches, a chronology, and cast of characters are included. Another nice perk is the large type size.Here is an interesting aside. When Steven Spielberg, director of the movie, interviewed historical scholars prior to writing the screenplay, he took notes using an inkwell and fountain pens in order to place himself into that historical period. I watched the movie, "Lincoln" and this book fills in the gaps from the movie. It is a really interesting read, and I really enjoyed the insights you get from the movie and book! Everyone should read this to understand why Lincoln is considered the best President ever.

Love Lincoln stories wherever they are written. This is digging in to the facts of the end of slavery. It is written for a middle school child. I will offer it to one i know when they are old enough.

I thought I knew a lot about Lincoln, but I learned so much more from this book. I wish I had it before seeing the movie.The book and the movie put emphasis on the 13th Amendment with the Emancipation Proclamation a document proclaiming what needed to happen; not an instrument that would end slavery.

I bought this book for my daughter she really likes it. It is an easy read.Came in a week. Highly recomended.

First, if you're a musician or singer, amateur or performer, stop here and order this book. You'll be amazed at how it enhances your approach to your art, no matter how accomplished you already are. But if you need convincing anyway, here's what I thought.Pedro de Alcantara is a cellist and teacher of the Alexander Technique, a method of achieving conscious control of the mind and body to regain the kind of natural coordination that many of us probably had only as kids. It's widely practiced particularly by actors, athletes, people wanting to overcome pain - and by musicians to help achieve a level of full, resonant and injury free playing. De Alcantara is also an original thinker and writer on all this (plus children's books!).I'm an adult violin student (with a life-long background in other instruments) taking Alexander Technique lessons to improve my approach to playing. My teacher gave me de Alcantara's previous book, Indirect Procedures, to help me developing my performance capabilities. Having benefitted greatly from that book's combination of the philosophical and the practical, I pre-ordered Integrated Practice and devoured it when it came.Integrated Practice is an application - and extension - of F.M. Alexander's thinking into the most fundamental notions of rhythm in practicing and performing music. The first section (half the book) is about reaching your own understanding of the internal rhythmic structure of the piece and communicating that to an audience. De Alcantara anchors the discussion in how humans relate to pulse, beat and rhythm in movement, language and poetry, and brings it into focus as the foundation for playing music. The second section explains key Alexander concepts and applies them to musical practice and performance. The third section develops the connection between the resonance of your instrument and rhythm.You do not sit down and read this book - you engage it. There's a level of energy emanating from the page that demands that you get up and do what de Alcantara requires of you to internalize rhythmic feeling, or organize your body better for playing your instrument or try out the practice routines he describes. He (and the Oxford University Press) provide a web site with over 100 video and audio clips demonstrating concepts and techniques described in the book. I'm constantly getting up to go to a certain clip, walk around in certain rhythm or try something out on my violin, inspired by the detailed thought he's put into making new patterns of playing music accessible and the clarity with which he presents it.On page 11, for example, he says, "Rhythm is coordination, and coordination is personality; ergo, rhythm is personality....[and, later]...Your musicianly duty is to think, breathe, and live rhythm all day long, developing your mastery of rhythm in speech, locomotion, song and dance, and in your every last gesture.... To start your work on rhythm, I propose that you walk in seven different ways."Then, drawing text and music from Shakespeare, Greek prosody, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, spoken English, haiku, Pound, Whitman, Shoenberg and others, he explains his view that rhythm is fundamental to existence and teaches how to become attuned to it (supported by video illustrations).In later sections, he goes on to improvisation, harmonics and other elements of becoming attuned to a piece of music at the most fundamental level, making the connection between the most abstract notions and putting them into practice.I kept feeling, "Wait, how is it that for $30 I get access to this kind of detailed tutorial based on all this original thought - and that, if I'm willing to do the work, will improve my playing right away?"Integrated Practice is the second in a series de Alcantara is calling "The Integrated Musician." I'd never heard the term before and many people may find it hard to grasp at first. But he has a way of discussing concepts at their most fundamental human level while anchoring them in the practical physical demands of making meaningful music. So a musician should just suspend disbelief with the confidence that you'll end up understanding what an "integrated musician" is.Anyone who wants to make music better tomorrow than yesterday will want this book.

Context: I'm a full time piano teacher and musician, so I DO think about practicing and how to make music, and I have dozens or hundreds of books on that topic....I've JUST started this book, but the crystal clear communication style and beautiful organization ... wow... I already know this is one of "those" books where I feel like the author is right there with me, telling me things I really need to know, with 100% credibility and authority and insight. I also feel like HE understands his points very well (with plenty of real world experience), so he is not speculating or guessing or wondering out loud....One way I know it's that kind of book is I find myself pencilling in a check mark or a star or an exclamation mark on almost every paragraph. It's a VERY WELL ORGANIZED book with superb presentation (including a thorough companion website with videos for many or most of the chapters). I have a great feeling about getting deep into this book. I certainly don't feel this way about every book! This is one of "those" treasures. Many thanks!

Every musician should read this. Pedro guides us through our daily practice in a ver fun and effective way. I highly recommend it to everyone.

I've been unable to get into this book. Feels like a doctoral thesis rather than a practical read. There may be value in there, I just couldn't stick with it.

Works very well. Would be nice to have installation instructions included.
