This is a very good reference book for the C programming language. For absolute C beginners I would also recommend used/older editions which are equally good for this purpose and less expensive (e.g. Beginning C 4th ed, Programming C 3rd by Kochan, C Primer by Pratta, and of course the ANSI C K&R). I bought this book because I was interested in the new multithreading libraries including in the C11 standard and for a better reference for C99 additions like standard ints and the complex datatypes. I was not disappointed. The examples about creating, suspending, and exiting from threads are very good, well structured, and with well-paced increased complexity. Wished that some of the examples had side-by-side comparisons between the new C11 multithread.h functions vs the POSIX pthread.h functions since pthreads are so popular, but other than that, very satisfied with this chapter. I should also mention that the last chapter contains many examples about the new Unicode extension in C11, which might be an useful resource for those coding with international datasets. Although many of the early chapters in this book are very similar to the previous 4th edition, you see a lot of preference for the new C11 thread/memory-safe I/O functions over the traditional I/O functions. There are many code examples about the new safe functions, some which unsurprisingly did not changed that much and others which changed significantly (for example, fopen_s is very different from fopen: no FILE * return). As a side note, I have *not* yet been able to compile the example using the threads.h library with the Mac gcc-4.8 fink port. I will update this review as soon as I get them running. If you are interested in portability over 32-bit and 64-bit systems, you might find very useful the section about the standard int datatypes (e.g. int32_t and int64_t), which have been available for some time. I thought that some of the examples in this book were going to cover the preprocessor macros for printing out standard int datatypes (like PRid32 and PRId64), or otherwise the developer will be required to reach back to the %ld or %lld for formatted printing. This left me a little confused.The examples in this book about the complex datatype were very good. I personally prefer using complex notation in my DSP libraries over the "struct { double re; double im; }" found in traditional code, which often evolves in many #define statements even for simple math operations. With the complex extension in C99 you can add complex numbers just as you will do for ints or doubles. It makes the code more readable and also shorter! Be careful however if using the complex.h library with legacy code, since some functions defined in this library could probably also exist in older libraries.In conclusion, I am glad I purchased this book. Great reference for just learning the language or getting familiar with the new extensions in the C11 standard.

The author does a great job of explaining components of C, then uses them in an example exercise. He then explains how the program/exercise worked. He starts off in the book with the basics and progresses along the way to material that is more difficult, but he is careful with his explanations so as not to go over your head as a beginning C programmer.

Who am I? I have messed with computers since my TRS-80 Model III back in the 80's when I was a kid. For two years, I was a computer science major in college in the early 90's. Back then, I learned BASIC, Pascal, Cobol, & Fortran. I know Pascal fairly well. Right now, I am mostly a high-end user of computers in my work. I decided to get back into the art of programming somewhat for fun & also as a way to integrate some of the at knowledge in what I do know, which is work in social services. I decided that I was going to learn C. It was available back in the 90's when I when to school and had wanted to learn about what others had told me is a powerful language. I get that C is not used as much since the advent of C++, C#, and Objective C. Eventually, I want to learn C++ & Objective C, but my old fashioned thinking had it set that I would probably do well to learn C first. I had an old copy of this book by Horton (2nd edition) and it appeared dated. Decided to spend the money and get an updated copy that I can read on my iPad. This is turning out to be a very informative book. I find it very detailed and fairly easy to read given the fact that I have some knowledge of programming already. Judging from what I read, I think that someone new to programming could probably find it useful as well as he does appear to be following what I learned as sound programming practices. Horton takes the time to explain most everything about the sample programs he uses and the various ways to accomplish the same tasks using different methods. He appears to have natural ability to simplify what is really a rather complex subject. If there was one thing I would criticize is his over-reliance on the C11 standards. I am limited to the gcc compiler, which only accomodates some of the standards. In fact, in my research, there are few compilers that actually are completely faithful to this standard. While this is not a huge issue, I did find it a bit irritating since that standard is so new and most of the major compilers are not yet there. That is the only complaint that I have about it to date. So far, i am on chapter 7 and learning about pointers, which is probably one of the most complex things in C. Horton is making it sound pretty manageable. I would recommend this book to novice programmers and for those who have some experience programming and want to learn about C.

This book is the latest edition of an earlier one purchased for professional use.

Comprehensive, and well written, in an easy to read format. I definitely would recommend this book as a first programming book.

Purchased as a gift for Giants baseball fan.

Great read even with a few pages bent

I bought this as a gift for my brother-in-law. (We don't call him Mr. MLB for nothing.) He was pleased to receive it, and is enjoying the read. A perfect find.

This book is full of anecdotes. Some are, of course, more interesting than others. Some chapters discuss the various decades that the Giants have played ball in San Francisco. Other chapters discuss the team's major stars of the past. There is information about ownership, spring training, playoff games won and lost, and infamous brawls. Having followed the Giants only since 2002, I cannot attest to the accuracy of all the events this book describes that occurred before that year. The last 3 extremely short chapters discuss the 21st century Giants and their 3 championships. These chapters must have been tacked on to the original book, which came out in 2003. I can say that I noticed some "facts" in the last two chapters that are wrong. It causes me to be suspicious about other "facts" throughout the book. I also found it odd that the authors, in discussing the Giant's game seven World Series win over Kansas City, never mentioned Jeremy Affeldt, who was the game winning pitcher in that contest. The book goes into detail about every other hitter, pitcher, reliever and opponent who was involved in any of the Giant's playoff games. Perhaps there are better Giants history books out there.

“Field Guide” is very appropriate. It is not the answer to all freelancing questions. Another reviewer put it should be called the Freelance Bible. Not quite. The book is geared towards guiding readers at certain points of their freelancing career. “I’m in this situation or point of my freelance career, let me check the field guide to see what to do.” Similar to a Boy/Girl Scout handbook—here are a bunch of knots to tie. They each have their definite purpose, but you can use different ones interchangeable based on your preference. Learn them all, but adapt as needed and to your preference.This isn’t going to teach you how to set up an LLC/S-Corp. The book doesn’t teach you how to write and read contracts. It gives you resources and teaches you how to approach those situations, but you’ll have to put in the extra time with those resources. They’re not going to magically appear from the book.I owe most of my freelance career to Joey. I use him as a resource all the time. I can say I am where I am at because of his lessons before buying this book. I am a bit biased in that sense. “So, then if you are so grateful to Joey, why just four stars?” Joey is always honest and straight with me and vice versa—This is a 4-Star book. It isn’t 100% perfect and doesn’t answer everything. I even found myself disagreeing with certain specifics, despite Joey being so influential on my career. That isn’t a bad thing. Everyone should have that reaction from any book of this caliber. All that said, this book is what every freelancer should use to start their careers. Not just motion designers. Any one.Don’t expect a Biblical experience, though. Expect to be amazed and swept away into wanting to freelance or be a better freelancer. Expect to need to put in the work to be successful at it, too.

I am not freelancing yet, but may soon :). This book does a great job of taking the fear out of the thought of freelancing AND shows one how to do it with a better chance of success. Joeys writing style is free-flowing and it feels like you are listening to a friend explain things to you. I was engaged the whole time. I had freelanced in graphic design a long time ago and wish I would have had a lot of this advice.I did notice how expensive it can get with all the little subscription cloud apps, that is recommended or talked about. It adds up. BUT, if you land jobs, the cost is not really that much of an issue and you write it off anyway. Also, I was glad to see him mention multiple times that you must have a good portfolio of work as well. Doesn't have to be award winning, but at least good.But Kudos to Joey for a valuable book to those seeking to freelance!

Most of the basics here are what you want to hear or need to hear. A quick read with a few good resources, a bit of pitching towards the SOM business and if you're lucky like I was, a completely crooked cutting off the press. The best info is the emailing approaches given. Also a good motivating refresher if needed.... the principles can be applied to those motion designers who care to expand their services too.

I picked up this book after being fired from my job. I read it cover to cover in one day. It literally walks you through every step of the process, about how to find clients, contact them, and find work as a freelance motion graphics artist. I would assume a lot of the principles would apply to other creative fields as well. Within a week, I booked my first gig at $500 per day - literally because of this book. Thank you Joey Korenman for changing my life.

This book is an absolute wealth of information. I first became familiar with Joey when I signed up to take School of Motion's Character Animation boot camp. I was so impressed with that course, that I've taken every other boot camp that SoM offers, and every time, I'm blown away by how much I learn (even though I've already been animating for 10 years). This book follows in that tradition of being an incredible resource of information. Joey is one of those rare, truly gifted and inspirational teachers. Great buy.

My girlfriend was working towards her MBA and received the following assignment. She was too look at the stock performance of a company over a period of time, compare it to news reports and formulate an explanation for the rise and fall of stock prices. In other words she was asked to predict the past. Ah, Economics. `The Black Swan' is about rare and unforeseen occurrences with massive repercussions that prompt `experts' to quickly explain their cause in order to justify their titles as `experts'. We can then all feel secure that our lives aren't controlled by the capricious winds of events beyond our control. The author unleashes an attack on statisticians, economists and others like psychiatrists, college admissions officers, and councilors who claim a high level of knowledge but predict at about the level of a layman. It took about half the book before I felt that I might be starting to understand the authors point and even after putting the book down I'm still not sure I get it.The number one target of the authors wrath is economists stating that, "the Nobel medal in economics has not been good for society or knowledge" calling the prize "a public relations coup by economists aiming to put their field on higher footing than it deserves" To that I would say "AMEN". Economists have been obsessed with placing economics among the hard sciences. The Chicago school and supply-siders are all convinced that economics can be boiled down to equations on a black board under the assumption that human actors will all operate according to predictable patterns. However the author writes, "If people make inconsistent choices and decisions, the central core of economic optimization fails. You can no longer produce a "general theory," and without one you cannot predict". This is the crux of the problem. Many of these Adam Smith, `Invisible Hand' economists have a worldview built on a faulty premise, that human's will always or even generally make reasonable or logical business decisions. The other assumption is that economics are predictable rather than dominated by Black Swan's but as the author writes, "In the last fifty years, the ten most extreme days in the financial markets represent half the returns" That's a pretty staggering pronouncement.Be forewarned that this book gets exceedingly technical in later chapters particularly when the author argues that we live in a world based on Mandelbrot's fractals rather than the Gaussian bell curve. The book is also a rallying cry for skeptics and as someone who picks up every issue of Skeptic magazine I found it quite refreshing. Skepticism is more than disbelief it's about questioning conventional wisdom and carefully deliberating the truth or falsity of a statement or idea. It's a lot easier said than done. I have to say that Mr. Taleb exhibits a bit of a mean streak throughout the book. He does not suffer fools lightly and frequently lists people by name that he disagrees with (and believe me when he disagrees he REALLY disagrees). Most of these people are probably only known in the statistical or economic circles and it seemed a tad excessive to call them out in a best selling book. The author admonishes those who engage in Ad Hominem attacks but some of his definitely skirt the edge. That aside The Black Swan is a book filled with great philosophical musings even if I'm still not sure I totally get it. I give it high marks.

Already lots of reviews on this work but I have an additional thought or two. I would have liked to have given this book a higher rating but Dr. Taleb's incessant jibes at mathematicians, economists, those working withing the financial markets, and even biologists (!!!) quickly gets VERY old. There are sections where every single page has some reference to this field or that which, in his estimation, is populated by nothing but the village idiots.I can certainly understand him taking exception with those who have, at least in the lead up to 2008, steered us onto the financial rocks, but his beating of the same drum gets quickly stale. Here I think of the maxim that at some point you have to fix the problem and not the blame. This book could have been a hundred pages shorter--perhaps a 20,000 word piece of long-form journalism.He also drifts to and fro quite a bit in his writing. While I truly enjoy his erudition and a touch of the circumlocution, this work would have been much better served if he had kept to the task at hand.There are a couple of redeeming aspects to his effort however. His admonition that it is better to prepare than it is to predict are wise words in any walk of life and here he frames them nicely.Also, in the epilogue he lists his "Ten principles for a black swan robust society." These are wonderful admonitions such as society should not socialize the losses and privatize the gains. Capitalism is about rewards and punishments not just rewards is another good point. This short section is well worth your time.I also liked his introduction to the reader of the concept of iatrogenics--making sure no lasting harm is done while trying to help.This would have worked much better in 20K words and without the snide comments regarding others and their fields of study. I think an admonishment that fits here is the "play the ball not the man."Neal Schier - June 2018

The first book that I read in the four-volume "Incerto" set by Nassim Kaleb was "Antifragile," so my reading of "The Black Swan" is out of sequence. However, I am glad that I came to it in its second edition, with footnotes addressing some of the criticisms made of it (tip: flip to the footnote as soon as you come across the symbol identifying it rather reading on to the end of the chapter where they are listed). While highly relevant to the dismal science of economics, it is far from a dismal tome. Some of the anecdotes will have you chuckling or even laughing out loud! It is a highly stimulating and entertaining book and will particularly delight those who enjoy the debunking of wrong-headed purveyors of elaborate academic theories that are not just useless but actually harmful. If this sounds like a book you might enjoy, be aware that the four-volume Incerto series is available as a set, something I found out too late to profit from the knowledge. I intend to purchase the other two volumes and recommend the set. His treatment of the devastating events known as Black Swans ought to be required reading for all who would like to avoid causing or experiencing them.

This is both an interesting book from the topic, how we tend to misinterpret and miss highly unlikely events, but also it is a statement to human resilience based on Mr. Taleb's history in emigrating from Lebanon. His views of the world are consistently positive and upbeat. BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO TAKE THE SAT CHEMISTRY SUBJECT TEST!!! I'm an AP Chemistry teacher who preps her students for the SAT subject test. I can't understand why anyone would give this only one star. You need to buy a review book from another company as well as this book if you are a student prepping for the Chemistry Subject Test and haven't taken AP Chemistry. This book contains two of the most recent actual tests given, which gives a student a much better idea of whether they know how to answer the types of questions the CollegeBoard will test. There are 4 more additional old SAT Chemistry/Achievement/II tests that have been published. Do an online search for SAT Subject Test Chemistry forms 3KAC2, 3EAC, 3PAC7, and 3YAC2. If you buy this book and can find the other 4 tests online, you will have 6 tests previously administered by the CollegeBoard for SAT Chemistry. If a student has taken AP Chemistry and also uses these practice tests, that should be enough review to get a score over 700 on the actual exam.

I bought two books and some sheet music. They were all more or less wrinkled and one book's back cover was put in the bag half folded. Amazon should be more careful when packing books. Sorry I have to rate the product two stars because they look used while I ordered new.

Those tests are actual tests administered by the College Board. Extremely helpful so you can check your knowledge after prep. The test included in the prep books are not accurate and not well written. Use the prep books to learn the stuff but then use these tests for practice.

The questions are a bit easy. Good for an early preparation
