Wow! This book is AMAZING! IfI could just make my review one sentence I would put- Buy this amazing book NOW! It's seriously that great!I honestly wasn't expecting to adore this book as much as I did. I didn't know much about it going into it either.I think my fascination with futuristic-space-shuttle-living started when I was a kid watching Xenon, Girl of the 21st Century on Disney Channel. And Brightly Burning made me think of that movie but more than any other, it reminded me of Wall-E.One of the things that I loved the most about this book was the romance and I'm usually not a Romance fan. I prefer books that focus more on world-building and plot, characterization. But this book had that AND a great romance! It wasn't an insta-love romance either, which I actually don't mind if done right. It was slow and sweet. I loved the mystery the story was built around as well. A lot of the time I'm able to figure out at the very least the general direction of a story but this one took me completely by surprise and I loved it! It wasn't predictable for me at all. I thought I knew what was going on but I was so wrong! And I loved trying to figure it out along the way.I loved the entire world in this one. The way everything worked. All of it. It was new and exciting. I loved the characters- Stella and Hugo are one of my new favorite ships now. I can't rave about this one enough and I highly recommend it!

I fell into this book head over heels, it swept me up and I couldn't put it down until I finished it!I loved all the book references to not only the Bronte sisters but to Jane Austen and even Harry Potter! Plus so many many others. This story makes one hope that even in the future some of these amazing stories can stand the test of time ,,, even if their pages are faded and the books are falling to pieces.So onto the story -The world building was great, even though they live on space ships which would make one think it'd be a limited world, it's not. The reader gets to explore multiple ships and even see a glimpse of why humans are orbiting earth in the first place ...The romance, it's a retelling of Jane Eyre so if you're familiar with that novel then you have a very good idea of whats's to come .... but it doesn't follow the script of Jane Eyre to a "T" so prepare yourself for some surprises!Lastly, the characters. They were fleshed out and I didn't feel like anyone was just a stand in or only 2D. Great characters and amazing growth!Happy Reading!

Already on my re-read list...This book felt like if Jane Austen wrote YA today. The writing style and voice had a sophisticated feel, but because it was first person perspective and fast paced, it kept my attention and I still really connected with the character.Often in stories set in space there's only one setting, the ship. But the author was able to explore multiple settings in this story making it feel like a real world. The way the ships ran, the jobs, the clothes, food, technology, etc. all made logical sense. The A.I. made me laugh because it's what I imagine the Amazon Echo to be like in a few years. Basically, the setting was an additional character in this story.There were only a few things I did not enjoy, but I want to be clear I still highly recommend this book. The first thing was the fake cursing. It always bugs me when stories make up fake curse words. The next thing was the romance. It felt a tiny bit instalove-ish, even though the characters did connect on a deep level that made sense and one saved the other from a life threatening event. I think because the stakes were so high in the end it felt like would this character really put everything on the line for someone she just met not too recently ago? I think the answer is she would, but while I was reading I felt myself hesitating to believe it. Lastly, everyone kept telling the MC she was bold and it felt condescending which I think the character kind of did say wtf stop calling me that, but still I was like stoppppp every time one of the character said it.Overall I think the voice, setting, plot twists, and main character all made it an amazing story. It is one that I will definitely revisit in the future. And I can't wait for this author's next book to come out (Jane Austen + The Bachelor + Space...um yes please!)

I bought this for my 14 year old son, who has been interested in aviation and aerospace since he was 4. When I gave it to him, he opened it up and immediately pronounced it, "Cool!" This is a major accomplishment for a mom of a teen, who is used to reactions ranging from apathy to disgust. Certainly, the format doesn't lend itself to a highly detailed account of aviation history, but this book is a true feast for the eyes, and should bring pleasure to aviation enthusiasts of most any age.

This is a beautiful fold out booklet with wonderful illustrations depicting an abridged history of the world of human flight. I'd love to frame it for the wall - the only problem is both sides are equally enchanting!

I suppose the expectation is that everyone joins the praise choir and emotes over such an amazing accomplishment. Because an accomplishment it should be for someone to illustrate the entire history of flight with no more than 1-2 pages worth of text and some quickly-drawn infographic-style illustrations unfolding on a 139 cm-long strip, double-sided.Sadly, I am not impressed at all. The illustrations are not 'beautiful' and look more like something drawn in a hurry because someone was tasked with drawing something and doing it quick. The sparse text blurbs are on the interior 'cover', separated from the actual illustrations and don't tell much of a story unless you are already reasonably well informed on the history of flight, aviation and space exploration. Absent that, it's a collection of disjointed, fact-poor paragraphs that tell you, for example, that Lindbergh flew over the Atlantic in 33 hours, faced snowstorms, got tired and was cheered by enthusiastic people in Paris. I wasn't able to find an actual illustration depicting the event on the folded strip. The Space Shuttle paragraph, the last of the 'chronology' does show one, strangely appearing to take off next to an astronaut jumping up and down on the Moon. Of course, the Moon landing took place in the early 1970's and the paragraph of the Shuttle only informs the reader that the program was ended in 2011. And no Space Shuttle ever came anywhere near the Moon as it was a strictly low orbit vehicle.Anyways, at a time when anyone can easily get to thousands of illustrations and videos and thousands of pages worth of information on the topic by simply googling it, I fail to 'get' the utility of this 'book' which is not a book, including 'art' that I would be call 'average' only if I felt generous about it. Whatever this is it is not a good learning resource, has nothing original as far as the art and, as I noted above, both the written part and the visuals are sometimes inaccurate and often out of context or irrelevant.

It took me some time to fully appreciate High Times, but I think it's an interesting leoprello or concertina style book given its unique format that presents a creative and thought provoking perspective on flight and related historical events over the ages. I think of High Times as a more sophisticated picture book where the material is printed on thick stock with panels that fold and unfold like accordion pleats rather than being a bound book with regular pages. High Times has an outer jacket with four panels that open to show via illustration and short narrative a condensed history of flight from ancient to modern times- beginning with ancient Greek mythology about Icarus falling from the sky and ending with the termination of the Space Shuttle program. A separate panoramic pullout that's ten panels long (but is double sided, so actually 20 panels) corresponds in order with the events in the jacket but uses illustration only to elaborate on the jacket content.High Times isn't a comprehensive aviation history. It's a condensed version especially suited to younger readers, yet it still provides a solid overview of milestones in the technological evolution of flight. By depicting when and how humankind has used its flight technology, High Times also captures important historical events, including the Vietnam War, the World Wars, the "Candy Bomber" when the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin, the Cold War, space exploration and so much more. High Times also shows an evolution of humankind's thought about flight. An obvious example is how the one end of the time line depicts Icarus falling from the sky and shows a lack of technology but a great fascination with flight dating back to ancient times, while the other end shows in modern times the advanced capability of flying to the moon but a complacency or waning interest signified by the termination of the Space Shuttle program.The art in High Times uses geometric and basic shapes and is somewhat simplistic in color and form, but it's a bright and busy picture with lots of interesting concepts and details to pour over, and it does an excellent job transitioning between events in the time line. I appreciate it's content as it captures the reality of flight by including a broad spectrum of events, such as onlookers watching new flying machines with excitement, fighter and bomber planes used for war, plane crashes, the use of the helicopter for rescue and the passenger jet for travel, man walking on the moon and much more. Not every event is happy, but I see nothing gory and don't think this would be an authentic work if hardships or any negativity associated with flight were censored from a historical piece. I like High Times a lot and think it's a thought provoking leporello book that- especially with some adult input- provides plenty of information to stimulate and teach youngsters about flight and related historical events.Note: Although not toxic smelling, the printed material has a strong smell that reminds me of the smell of newsprint but stronger. After almost 2 weeks, it's dissipated some but hasn't disappeared.

I am turning a 5 acre urban forest into an urban orchard. Nothing grows there now because of the dense tree cover and resultant lack of sunlight.Permaculture and food forests are popular buzzwords, but it is annoying how much revolves around weekend seminars, which are expensive and time consuming. I prefer information from books, which can be referenced. Many books on permaculture are limited to the climate of the author, but the authors do not seem to realize this and do not make a note of it in the book's description.This book has helped me in two specific ways. I am in zone 5 USA, warm summers and freezing winters. I bought some blueberry plants in mid summer from a local store which had them on clearance sale. Using the information in the book, I was able to dig proper fertile holes and plant about 20, they all survived the heat and humidity.The second thing I am doing as a result of the book is taking down trees over the winter, preparing to plant clover and grass. The book states which clover is best to plant, though I can't find a reference source for the claim. So, I am planting red, crimson, white and yellow, along with orchard grass.Michael Phillips has also set up a website.The main thing I have learned is the one absolute requirement is sunlight, at least here, edible plants simply require at least 6 hours of light. (Perhaps some tropical plants require less.) Also, there does not appear to be any quick and easy ways to plan what to plant. Everyone seems to recommend some clover because they provide nitrogen and they are durable.This is a practical book and it is worth the cost for what I have learned so far. I hope to use it more in the future.Edit: I bought it as an electronic book and use the "search" feature to learn about specific plants or terms. I think the book works well this way and do not know if it would work well to read it all the way through. I can't imagine myself reading a book this big all the way through, as most of it would never apply to my situation.

This is an excellent book. It has lots of good advice and numerous resources in the back. He also explains how you can tailor some of these methods to your preferences or exchange some sprays for others which you feel more comfortable with. I was surprised when I read that mushrooms growing under your trees meant the ecosystem was thriving well. I had always thought that mushrooms growing were a bad sign.

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would.This is the BEST book on holistic orcharding out there. While it's accessible, Phillips isn't afraid to get down in the dirt and go for technical biological details. A huge amount of information, but this didn't leave me wondering where to begin- he takes care of that by stepping you through the timeline and process. As soon as I'd finished reading, I started over and read it again. We all have areas that are more difficult for us than others, and some chapters will require me to study them carefully before I master the detail. I know I'll be referring to it frequently, and as my knowledge and understanding builds, I'm certain that I'll continue to gain insights from it through the years to come. This book has heft and value!Apples are listed as one of the dirtiest conventionally produced crops. When I started researching how to care for fruit trees it was a tough slog. I respect organic farmers deeply, but for many the basic bias is the same as conventional ag, just using less toxic chemicals. The problem is that if it were as simple as substituting less toxic chemicals EVERYONE would be doing it - no farmer really wants that crap around his home and family. Spraying isn't only a chore, but a hated one. When you need to wear protective clothing it's hard to feel good about you're doing, instead it encourages a war zone mentality. We war against insects, we war against disease.After studying organic, permaculture and biodynamic farming for 5 years, I finally stumbled across Elaine Ingham's work on soil microbiology, and became convinced that the key is maximizing the health of the biological critters in the soil, and finding ways to support them correctly so that they can support my apple trees. But this is all pretty new, cutting edge science, and figuring out how to progress from that understanding to an actual maintenance and treatment program was beyond me. I had bits and pieces of the puzzle.I renamed my sprayer the "Lunch Wagon" and began spraying enhanced compost teas and raw milk, preferentially feeding the "good guys" to allow them to get the upper hand.This book goes way beyond that. Michael Phillips pulls all of the disciplines together in a comprehensive approach. He's a real farmer who needs results, not an academic or an acolyte limited by a biased preference for one system or the other. An organic farmer for many years, he's willing and able to pull from biodynamic and permaculture principals to promote the biological content of the soil. Best, he does it with an orchardists' wisdom and understanding. Most of the materials/articles/books I've seen are focused on row crops, and the needs of an orchard are very different.We all want to understand our trees, the essential understory and the microflora and fauna that make up the ecology of the orchard; but practical advice for dealing with real life problems is critical. Phillips supplies both the understanding and the practical steps to take to achieve results.If you're committed to farming sustainably or if you just want a few fruit trees without poisoning your kids and pets with spray residues, take time to give this a thoughtful read!

This is really interesting and provides lots of ideas. I do wish they had included plant size; that will require extra research for garden planning.

This is a great reference material for New England gardens, I find the arrangement of plant types is particularly useful. There are historical notes at the beginning of each entry which helps to understand where to place the plant on a time line, or why it has become common, or why it's fallen out of most frequent use. In the latter case, it's interesting to find species or strains of common plants that are native to New England that got crowded out of gardens in the last or previous century, particularly if you'd like to reintroduce them into your garden. Also, it is very thorough - I found every plant that I was hoping to see, plus many more that I knew nothing about. The only thing I found lacking is that some of the entries didn't have specific info about what size plants will get (as in actual measurements) or what age they will get to before replacing. I may need to check an additional resource for this. However, it doesn't detract from the value of this book. Very pleased, highly recommended.

This is a great book. Easy to use and to understand. Nice size to keep in my car or carry in a backpack when on a hike.

Gave me lots of ideas for my yard and garden, and also, almost by accident, taught me things I really should have known. I never gave a thought to some common garden plants (lily of the valley stands out) being native or non-native. Instructive and eye-opening!

This book is excellent for the less experienced gardener but a bit too basic for one who is familiar with garden and (some) woodland plants.

Great books if you want to choose native plants for your landscaping. This book is helpful for beginners up to master gardeners.

Lots of good ideas in the book. Some I might not use, like having my wedding on a weekday, so many people wouldn't be able to come. Not cool. Or having afternoon tea instead of a regular dinner/dancing/drinks reception. Personally that is not for me, I love the dancing part and being with my family. So that just wouldn't work.But the tips for where to buy groomsman ties cheaper, or bridesmaids dresses and shoes was nice, flower tips and where to get the alcohol cheaper, very nice.It also includes websites to check out. Which is kind of annoying because they are not hyperlinks, but its still nice to see some examples instead of having to look yourself.I got this book for free during an Amazon.com promo.

Whether you're planning a low-budget wedding, or just trying to shave extraneous costs from your budget to avoid spending on non-essentials, you will find ideas in this easy to read little book. Depending on your design ethic and style, you will just skim over some of the ideas, but you will also find some that resonate for you. Each couple will have non-negotiable items - good wine vs. cheap grocery store wine, live music vs. a DJ, silk flowers vs. fresh, etc. There are many cost-cutting ideas that will allow you to have a unique special wedding without going deeply into debt. This won't be the only resource you'll use during wedding planning, but can certainly provide many thought starters for your big day.

The title says, "51 Ways" but it feels like Pepper crammed in about three times that amount into this handy little book! I read this when my wedding was 3 months off, and I think the thing that stood out most was what Pepper says at the start - to avoid constant comparison to other weddings. This is especially hard with the "wedding porn" on the internet, particularly with the advent of Pinterest. I found myself looking at all the amazing possibilities, and being deflated about what was possible with *my* budget. Which was tiny.Reading this book really helped bring me back down to the ground and made me realise what's most important on the day to ME, and that's going to differ for everyone. The best bit was knowing that no matter what's most important, it can still be done tastefully and to our own style and preferences without breaking the bank. One example from this book: dresses. I'm only having 2 bridesmaids, but I took the author's tip and told them each to wear their favourite dress in our colours (to match my fiance's clan tartan). That gave them endless options, doesn't make everything overly-matchy-matchy, and yet still will all tie together. And the bottom line is everyone is happy with that!Definitely will recommend this (and already have!) to anyone I know getting married. The links are great, though unfortunately as I'm in the UK, and most of them are U.S.-specific, some of the vendors and things weren't applicable to me but it was the ideas that encouraged me. But you can't go wrong with Pepper's knowledge of this area - she organised not one but THREE weddings of her own (her husband and she had a separate celebration on three different continents), so this woman definitely has the experience in budgeting with style!! I made notes throughout and highlighted lots of links to check, which are laid out in a very organised and succinct manner.Anyone planning a wedding, whether you have 2 years or 6 months, pick this book up!! You won't regret it!

I bought this as a gift for my daughter, who is planning her wedding for next Spring. I had received a free e-copy from the author, and it looked like something my daughter could benefit from, so I ordered her a physical copy and had it shipped directly to her. It arrived within 2 days, and she says it has some good ideas in it, and will save her some money; that makes BOTH of us happy! Jury still out....all my kids' weddings have gone great without this (trust an amazing restaurant to know what to do, folks!) but I am sending it on to my next future daughter in law and hopefully it will help her negotiate the outeageous costs of trying to do a wedding in a state park!!!

I've had this book stashed for quite awhile, so when my daughter got engaged last week, I was prepared! There are many great tips here that I know we will use, and many that have inspired some really fun ideas. I can't wait to share this with my daughter!
