Lots of good ideas in the book. Some I might not use, like having my wedding on a weekday, so many people wouldn't be able to come. Not cool. Or having afternoon tea instead of a regular dinner/dancing/drinks reception. Personally that is not for me, I love the dancing part and being with my family. So that just wouldn't work. But the tips for where to buy groomsman ties cheaper, or bridesmaids dresses and shoes was nice, flower tips and where to get the alcohol cheaper, very nice.It also includes websites to check out. Which is kind of annoying because they are not hyperlinks, but its still nice to see some examples instead of having to look yourself.I got this book for free during an Amazon.com promo.

Whether you're planning a low-budget wedding, or just trying to shave extraneous costs from your budget to avoid spending on non-essentials, you will find ideas in this easy to read little book. Depending on your design ethic and style, you will just skim over some of the ideas, but you will also find some that resonate for you. Each couple will have non-negotiable items - good wine vs. cheap grocery store wine, live music vs. a DJ, silk flowers vs. fresh, etc. There are many cost-cutting ideas that will allow you to have a unique special wedding without going deeply into debt. This won't be the only resource you'll use during wedding planning, but can certainly provide many thought starters for your big day.

The title says, "51 Ways" but it feels like Pepper crammed in about three times that amount into this handy little book! I read this when my wedding was 3 months off, and I think the thing that stood out most was what Pepper says at the start - to avoid constant comparison to other weddings. This is especially hard with the "wedding porn" on the internet, particularly with the advent of Pinterest. I found myself looking at all the amazing possibilities, and being deflated about what was possible with *my* budget. Which was tiny.Reading this book really helped bring me back down to the ground and made me realise what's most important on the day to ME, and that's going to differ for everyone. The best bit was knowing that no matter what's most important, it can still be done tastefully and to our own style and preferences without breaking the bank. One example from this book: dresses. I'm only having 2 bridesmaids, but I took the author's tip and told them each to wear their favourite dress in our colours (to match my fiance's clan tartan). That gave them endless options, doesn't make everything overly-matchy-matchy, and yet still will all tie together. And the bottom line is everyone is happy with that!Definitely will recommend this (and already have!) to anyone I know getting married. The links are great, though unfortunately as I'm in the UK, and most of them are U.S.-specific, some of the vendors and things weren't applicable to me but it was the ideas that encouraged me. But you can't go wrong with Pepper's knowledge of this area - she organised not one but THREE weddings of her own (her husband and she had a separate celebration on three different continents), so this woman definitely has the experience in budgeting with style!! I made notes throughout and highlighted lots of links to check, which are laid out in a very organised and succinct manner.Anyone planning a wedding, whether you have 2 years or 6 months, pick this book up!! You won't regret it!

I bought this as a gift for my daughter, who is planning her wedding for next Spring. I had received a free e-copy from the author, and it looked like something my daughter could benefit from, so I ordered her a physical copy and had it shipped directly to her. It arrived within 2 days, and she says it has some good ideas in it, and will save her some money; that makes BOTH of us happy! She tends to stress out about details, so hopefully this will help her in that department as well. I'll post another review after the wedding, to relate how the book was able to help her. Until then, have a good winter!

Jury still out....all my kids' weddings have gone great without this (trust an amazing restaurant to know what to do, folks!) but I am sending it on to my next future daughter in law and hopefully it will help her negotiate the outeageous costs of trying to do a wedding in a state park!!!

I've had this book stashed for quite awhile, so when my daughter got engaged last week, I was prepared! There are many great tips here that I know we will use, and many that have inspired some really fun ideas. I can't wait to share this with my daughter!

51 Ways to Save Money gave me great ideas to help plan an out-of-town wedding on a budget.I emailed Laura and she responded the same day!!!! As we get further into the planning I hopeto get more info from her. Thanks, Laura!!!

Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, by Donald L. Miller

Review

"Masters of the Air is a piece of history that accurately and comprehensively tells the story of the Eighth Air Force going mano a mano against a tough and determined foe. The incredible cost to both sides is recounted in riveting detail. It left me shaken." -- Lt. Gen. Bernard E. Trainor, USMC (Ret.) and coauthor of Cobra II: The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq"Miller's work is always extraordinary but this large volume is especially remarkable for its valuable recovery of details, like all the psychiactric ruin of the many bomber boys assigned to kill German civilians. This is a rare account of the American Eighth Air Force, and with so many readers hoodwinked by fantasies of The Good War, it deserves wide acceptance and ultimate enshrinement as a classic." -- Paul Fussell, author of The Great War and Modern Memory"When I learned that Don Miller had written a history of the air war against Germany, I knew that readers would be transported as virtual eye witnesses to this aerial battle field. His gripping reconstruction of what was happening in the planes is matched by the best account yet of what the bombings were doing to Germans on the ground. This book bears the Miller trademark: a strong narrative supported by solid history." -- Joseph E. Persico, author of Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day Eleventh Hour: Armistice Day 1918"Masters of the Air is a fresh new account of the incredible rise of the American air force from young men learning their trade on the job in combat to an irresistible force that swept the vaunted Luftwaffe from the skies. Author Donald L. Miller knits together the big events of the bombing campaign with illuminating individual human stories of the heroes who lived and died over Germany." -- Walter J. Boyne, former director, National Air and Space Museum"Over the first years of World War II, the only American casualties on European soil were flyboys shot out of the sky. Long before Normandy, America's bomber boys waged the Allies' longest WWII campaign and brought the war to Hitler. Now we are fortunate that the incomparable Donald Miller has brought the memory of these Masters of the Air back to us." -- James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers and Flyboys"Masters of the Air is masterful narrative history, the elegantly interwoven story of the men and boys who first took the war to the heart of Germany. Vivid and meticulous, judicious but not judgmental, Donald L. Miller chronicles the air war over Europe in all its heroism and horror." -- Geoffrey C. Ward, author of Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson"Donald L. Miller's Masters of the Air is a stunning achievement. The compound effect of the book's narrative vitality and attention to human detail is terrific in all the meanings of the word - terrifying, extraordinary, highly admirable. What a story it is!" -- David McCullough"Masters of the Air is a direct hit." -- Allan R. Millett, Director, Eisenhower Center for American Studies, University of New Orleans"For sixty years we have waited for a history to equal the epic saga of the Eighth Air Force's struggle with fighters, flak and weather on a battlefield moving at three miles per minute five miles above the earth's crust. Now it is here. With brilliant artistry, Don Miller paints the story from the pallet of the voices of the men who manned the planes or waited them out." -- Richard B. Frank, author of Downfall: The End of the Imperial Japanese Empire

Superb history of the Eighth Air Force and its combat operations in World War II. This book puts the Daylight Precision Bombing operation into a historical context. This theoretical, untried concept was wrong-headed in so many ways. Pre-war planners eschewed the need for a long range fighter to shepherd the bombers, believing that the heavily armed B-17 could easily defend itself. Instead the plane was easy prey for Germany's fighters. The planes were not equipped to keep their crews warm at the cold altitudes at which they operated. And the Norden bombsight, tested in the clear skies over the desert in America, was problematic over Europe, where clouds cover reigned much of the year. Tactics and objectives had to be rethought again and again. Meanwhile, airmen died by the thousands. Miller moves seamlessly from broad overview to personal stories of heroism and horror to thoughtful analysis of how the massed bomber attacks on Germany affected the outcome of the war. A fast, lively, and informative read.

This is the most amazing book you will ever read regarding the WW II European air war from the American side. There are detailed stories in this book, from both the American, British and German side that many people, I am sure, never heard of before. Service in the Eighth Air Force over Europe was a dangerous assignment that required courage, stamina, and skill that I never realized. Skill that was often exhibited by young men in their late teens and early twenties. Many men that were away from home for the first time. Most that had never even flown in an airplane, let alone fly one in combat. In the future, when I look at bombers from WW II that are still flying at air shows that I visit, I will look at them with an entirely different view than I did in the past. The romance of flying those planes has been replaced with the stark reality of the hell those flight crews went through, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.I knew some of those men intimately when I was growing up as a boy having been born after WW II. Some were my relatives and it is interesting to me that not one of those men ever told me about the horror they went through serving in the air crews over Europe during WW II. Not one mentioned anything about their experiences. I used to ask the former air crew members I met why they did not keep involved in flying after the war. Only my cousin answered me when he said that he associated flying with death and he had had enough of it. After reading this book, I realized what he was talking about.Buy and read this book. You owe it to the men that were there. Many did not come home again. The author makes this era come so alive that I had to stop reading and take a break at some of the vivid detailed scenes he captured on the page of what it was like to fly over Europe for the USAduring WW II. I liked this book so much that I bought additional copies and gave them to people I know that are interested in the subject.

A massive complete work. This book is not just the history of the combat bombing air war over Europe in WWII but the entire history of the lead up to the war and the political, social and economic highlights of both the RAF and USAAF efforts. Most impressive is the impartial evaluation and controversy regarding the results. Of special value to this reader is the coverage of the personal aspect of war, from the bases in England to the POW camps in Europe. There is even coverage of the effect of the bombing war on the German population. There are surely equal or even better books covering each topic, however no book this reader has read since 1959 has done as complete a job. The book is correctly centered on the US 8th Air Force and its history, but a complete history of the US and RAF effort is achieved. The book is massive with over 40% devoted to notes and bibliography. An excellent read and reference guide.

As an amateur WWII historian, I found this book to be the absolute best written and most comprehensive treatment of the air war over Europe. I came across this book while visiting the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Savannah, GA, and talked to both former airmen, who were part of a veterans group visiting the museum, and researchers at the museum. They all agreed that this is the best historical account of not only the air battles and the airmen involved, but also the behind the scenes decision-making by both U.S. and the British military and political leaders. I found the differences between the U.S. focus, at least initially, on strategic targets (i.e., ball bearing, military equipment manufacturing, transportation networks, oil supply, etc.), and the British focus on demoralizing the German citizenry by bombing non-military targets (e.g, fire bombing of large cities as payback for the Nazi bombing of English civilian targets) to be both interesting and somewhat disturbing. Also, information on the aircraft used by U.S., British, and German forces was very interesting, especially the roles played by U.S. fighters, in particular the P-51 Mustang, in establishing total air superiority in the skies over Europe, which was considered the major prerequisite to the Normandy invasion and eventual Allied victory.

As my father was a right waist gunner on B-17 in 390th (Framlingham, England) and flew 17 missions-shot down on 18th and PoW for 13 months in Stalag 17B-this book is a direct recount of what he told me. Each testimony is a very accurate and parallel account of his time there also.I am presently enjoying very much for its journalistic approach and historical accuracy. If you are interested in WWII history-particularly the Air War in Europe-this is your book. To understand what these young men went through will give you a sense of pride in their generation. It is an excellent book and am looking ever forward to the upcoming miniseries and i thank the author for his dedication to this subject.

I like books on the Bible which inspire me, inform me and offer me guided instruction to realize the inspired thought of the book. "Deep Calls unto Deep" is surely a work of that description. It is a kind of hybrid of inspirational perspective on the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament, a specific guide to actualizing the inspired relationship with the Lord through the process of Bible study, worship and journaling and finally (but not least) a collection of beautiful and unique artistic renderings of the Song. This is obviously a book which the author has not just been inspired to write about, but a book which she has lived. Her personal story make it relative and seemingly accessible to myself as well. That is enormously hopeful.

A gifted author and scriptural teacher, Ms. Lokits draws from the Song of Solomon and a wealth of personal experience to show the reader the richness found in a love relationship with God. DEEP CALLS UNTO DEEP reveals the intimate communion between Jesus as the bridegroom and each of us individually as his bride. Each chapter is beautifully illustrated with watercolor paintings done by the author herself, who is also a teaching artist.

“Deep Calls Unto the Deep”, is Bible study that teaches & inspires. If you’re feeling the need to have a closer connection with God, try this book. It thoughtfully composed and easy to follow both for individual or group study. I have the hard copy and love the beautiful art inside too. You will love the journey it can take you on.

I give it a full five stars not so much for its absolute accuracy, but rather for its broad analysis in and of a certain historical period. The first few chapters are a rather tedious refutation of Malthusian theory of population growth, and the implicit economic theory behind it. From then on it has all it takes to be considered a classic. The basic idea of common ownership (but not necessarily right to use) to land and other natural resources is deeply rooted in most humans, and is probably a much more clear and straightforward moral ground for taxation than whatever is currently presented by liberal democracies.Add to this the enormous potential of collecting rent (i.e. the value of unimproved land, including its natural resources such as minerals or forests, and also the increased value from its location, e.g. in a city) as taxes and you have a strong foundation for state finances.Henry George explains -sometimes in rather archaic terms, using farmers and farm land as the most frequent example- why such a system would be to great benefit of virtually everyone in society. For instance: Speculation in land would be seriously dampened and useful land would hardly lay idle. His conclusion is the Single Tax. Which is perhaps why the idea died away. Still a great inspiration a century and a half after its first publication. And quite an easy read, considering the dryness of its subject.

Amazing landmark works by an esteemed author, if you know anything about Henry George I need not go on. One problem with this edition is that the footnotes don't seem to work, and trying to find which is being referenced is next to impossible. Seeing as how important footnotes are to a work like this, it does affect the reading experience.

This excellent treatise on economics is the basis for the principle of "full value land taxation" implemented by California Treasurer Ivy Baker Priest (1967-1975). It caused a hue and cry in the business community. If fully implemented nationwide, it would obviate the need for all other taxes because the greatest source of wealth is land. There is good reason why land is called REAL estate. An oversimplification is this: Manhattan Island was purchased by European settlers from native Indians in 1626 for $24. In 1996 Manhattan Island's estimated worth was $34,000,000,000. In our economy, land is commonly taxed on the basis of the purchase price, and the difference between the initial purchase price and subsequent sales price is considered to be profit. Full value land taxation, however, says that in this example, if Manhattan Island is taxed based on the purchase price of $24, then it can only be sold for $24. If the owner wishes to sell the land for its full value of $34B, then it must be taxed based on $34B.

This is NOT a review of the book, but of the 2017 paperback edition with COAL MINERS ON THE COVER.DON'T BUY THIS EDITION!It's incredibly cheaply produced. From appearances, the text was badly OCRed from another source, introducing many typos. Worse, the font is much too small and the columns are far too wide, making it very difficult to read. Looks like it was put together by some no-name "publisher" (nowhere identified in the printing; can't say I'm surprised) out to make a quick, fraudulent buck off this out-of-copyright classic.

The quality of the printing could be better done. The content is a classic understanding of early pre-socialist “Christian liberation theology”. It’s a great insight to the workings of how this developed into the 1960’s post Vatican 2 theological justice moment. Worth the read

Fantastic book. Really provides a thoughtful (not academic in the modern sense) discussion for interest rates and how they function. I'm very glad I stumbled across this book several years ago.

As a conservative I bought this book hoping to learn more about the author's opinions regarding the root cause of poverty in the late 1800s. This book is nothing more than a fancy cover over photo copies of the original text from a library. The publisher didn't even bother to create a table of contents, an index of key topics or bump up the original font size from 3 to something readable. The author's writings just rambling on and on. Once in a wild he stumbles upon a good question such as, "What is the meaning of life?", but he just keeps rambling and never tries to answer it. This book represents the unfortunate transition from a great potential to a pile of rubbish.

A must read for anyone wishing to understand where and how America confused happiness and mass consumption/ technological innovation. Too few environmentalists reference George. It seems that his 150 year old ideas are still too radical, or too honest. One of the great works of American philosophy, "poverty and progress" is a blue print for social justice. The printing is the original from 1870's. George had the plates made himself because his publishers did not want to risk the money on the printing plates if the book didn't sell. Let's get this book back in print and give Henry George his proper seat in history as an incredible intellectual with an uncommonly large heart.

We also reviewed the 5th book in the Alvin Ho series (Allergic to Babies, Burglars, etc.), which is my 6-year-old's favourite. This one (Allergic to Dead Bodies, etc.) is my personal favourite, though my kid also enjoyed it as well. What I appreciated about the book was that it treated the subject of death and aging in a sensitive -- yet hilarious -- fashion. I also very much enjoyed the way the main conflict in the book was resolved (Alvin was afraid to go to his grandfather's friend's funeral) and found the ending very moving. And, as always, we enjoy Alvin's neuroticism and quirkiness. Again, please note that there is a glossary in the back of the book that explains in a humourous way various concepts, including Chinese cultural concepts, so you should consult the glossary while you read the book. We look forward to future installments in the Alvin Ho series.

In many books, the more the reader connects to the main character(s), the more they are likely to appreciate the book. At least that is true in my experience, but not always. Sometimes the author makes the character so real that you can sympathize even without having similar experiences. Alvin Ho is one such character. His fears and good intentions make him a very sympathetic character, even if one does not have numerous fears as does Alvin. In this fourth book especially, it is easy to relate to Alvin. Losing a loved one is difficult for anyone, adult or child. Alvin's fears make him especially susceptible to superstitions about death. Even though the book deals with death, it does so in a sensitive way without losing the trademark humor that make these books enjoyable to read. Some of the most humorous parts involve misconceptions about death and funerals that Alvin and his friends have. For example, when Alvin finds out that his GungGung's friend has died, he tells his sister, "When you die, you're dead...Then you go to heaven on the bus." Later, a friend tells him a wake (viewing) is "when you sit around and wait for the dead person to wake." This reminds of how easy it is to get wrong ideas, that is one reason for getting an education. Adults are not however, immune to 'wrong ideas,' they can be found everywhere. In addition, Alvin's situation becomes radically worse when his teacher and others at school assume the funeral Alvin is going to is his GungGung's and he doesn't correct it. This reminds me of my own tendency to make situations worse for myself without meaning to.In the end, it is Alvin's weaknesses that make him such an easy character to relate to and when he succeeds at something, however small, the reader cheers for him. This series is perfect for young readers who must face their own fears every day. Highly recommended.

These books would be good for boys and girls. My 2nd grade son and I read this entire series together. Every night we looked forward to learning what predicaments the well-meaning Alvin got himself into. Alvin is smart, sweet, creative, funny and tries to be a gentleman. Alvin is also shy, anxious, and unable to speak in public. My son says,"I like to read Alvin Ho. I think these are good books. I hope there will be more, like books #7, 8, 9 and 10! I think the next book should be 'Alvin Ho:Allergic to history, reading and other big stuff.'"

My son received the first Alvin Ho book at a book exchange at a birthday party. He absolutely loved the first book, and couldn't wait for the next. This is the fourth in the series, and while it's still Alvin Ho, this one is not as funny and quirky as the previous three. This one is about a young elementary school aged boy named Alvin Ho, and his first, indirect encounter with the death of someone he knows (his grandfather's old friend) and the mishaps and attention that come from not correcting a growing miso erection that Alvin's grandfather is the one who died. The other books are much more funny and light hearted and downright silly. Alvin's view of the world is clearly that of an innocent youngster who is woefully afraid of just about everything in life, and who relies on big brother Calvin, little sister Annibelly, and friend Flea (a girl with an eye patch and one leg longer than the other) to survive. Oh, and don't forget the Shakespearean curses he learns from his dad. I definitely recommend the Alvin Ho series, especially for boys 4-10. This one, while still pretty good, is our least favorite of the four.

really funny books. my 8 year old son has read them all and reads them more than once. even funny for parents and adults as well.

My son received the first few books in this series for his birthday and enjoys them very much. He says they are funny and seems to relate with the main character. He reads them on his own and it is a nice variation from his usual choice of sports statistics.

Son loved it. Read a chapter to him every night.

My 8yr old loves this series...great books and nice shorter chapter length bridging that tough spot between easy books and the longer stuff

The Leader's Bookshelf is a singular and valuable contribution to developing effective leaders." --Naval War College Review"The Leaders Bookshelf is therefore something of a continuation of Stavridis' (and Ancell's) quest for critical thinkers and new knowledge. But it is more so, for it provides useful signposts and direction - as much for reading the past, as understanding the present, and scoping our futures." - The NAVY Magazine of the Navy League of Australia"…A very comprehensive list of books that should move, inspire, inform and educate both existing and prospective leaders. Inspiring stuff." - Ausmarine"The Leader's Bookshelf is easy to read and offers essayistic content." --Militärgeschichtlichen Zeitschrift"The helpful hints coupled with the insights on the books makes this a useful book for any leader in any career. I recommend this book to all readers." - Army University Press"It is a deeply thoughtful and thought-provoking book, food for all minds at whatever stage of leadership or aspiration wherever the reader has reached."- Tidskrift I Sjöväsendet"For any student of leadership, this book provides an excellent starting point for in-depth reading, along with a useful framework for continued study. Highly recommended." - CHOICE connect"Admiral Jim Stavridis knows the world of leadership well, from his service as Supreme Allied Commander at NATO to his job today as Dean of The Fletcher School at Tufts. He is an inveterate reader and believes in the power of books to make us far better leaders--as do I. The Leader's Bookshelf is a terrific resource for any leader." -- GEN. STANLEY McCHRYSTAL, USA (RET.), CEO of the McChrystal Group; former Commander, NATO and U.S. Forces Afghanistan"I have known Admiral Stavridis since we entered the Naval Academy together and throughout our careers. Some years ago I met Admiral Jim Stavridis. The conversation, while short, turned to books. If I recall, it was in Stuttgart, Germany, sometime around 2010 or 2011. Because he was the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and the U.S. European Commander (EUCOM), he had to divide his time between two locations: his NATO headquarters located near Mons, Belgium and his EUCOM headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. At the time, I worked in the intelligence directorate at EUCOM when we heard he was coming by to meet the staff. It was a gray, overcast afternoon when he arrived. He promptly made his way down a long line of officers and enlisted, each of them posed to shake his hand and say a few words. I had only a few seconds to make a connection—to say something interesting or ask him a question. But this I knew: I loved books; he loved books; and while standing there, I thought of something he wrote that might prove that I, like him, believed that books are essential to our profession, if not our lives.Months prior, he had written one of his regular blog posts. In it, he said that his wife noticed that his love of books and his growing library had evolved into a “gentle madness.” That phrase—a “gentle madness”—refers to a wonderful book by author Nicholas Basbanes. Basbanes’ book—A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books — is a long, discursive work: one part discussion of historic book culture in America and Britain, the other full of profiles of quirky and dedicated book lovers and collectors. When the admiral finally reached me, I mentioned the blog post and the book. His eyes lit up and he said something about few people knowing the reference. He then told me he owned 4,000 books. Surprised, I said something about wanting a library that large. He then simply said, “You’ll get there.” The conviction in his voice floored me. I believed him. And he was right. I’m getting there (the featured image of this post is a picture of my library; today I have around 2,000 titles, give or take).Fast forward a few years and, no surprise, the admiral’s library has grown. Stavridis, in the introduction to the entertaining The Leader’s Bookshelf, says that he has in his “house today… more than four thousand books.” His wife, Laura, “has spent far too much of her life packing and unpacking them in postings all around the world.”Stavridis and his co-author, R. Manning Ancell, have written a book that is somewhat similar to Richard Puryear’s fine book—now unfortunately out of print—American Admiralship: The Moral Imperatives of Command. Puryear interviewed 150 four star admirals on a variety of topics. One of those topics was the importance of reading. And like Puryear, Stavridis and Ancell take a similar path. In The Leader’s Bookshelf, they interviewed 200 four-star generals and flag officers, and from those discussions, they determined the 50 books that “stood out most…with top military readers.”Using no particular scientific method, they rank ordered the books in descending order by the number of mentions. Thus, the first book on the list, Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels (1974), was mentioned most often. While the last on the list, How: Why HOW We Anything Means Everything by Dov Seidman, was mentioned least frequently. For each title, there is a short essay by a senior officer as to why they choose the book, followed by a quote from the book, a biography of the author, then a summary of the book by either Stavridis or Ancell, concluding with a few sentences about why the book is important for leaders today. For folks that regularly follow the reading lists that are published by the Chief of Naval Operations or the other services, there are, unfortunately, few surprises. The regularly cited titles appear: Anton Myer’s Once an Eagle, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, Clausewitz’s On War, John Keegan’s The Face of Battle, E.B. Potter’s Nimitz, and the always popular Steven Pressfield with his Gates of Fire. They all made the cut. While there is nothing wrong with the oldies but goodies, it was refreshing to see some unusual—or rather, some outliers—find a place in the top 50. Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s court makes a showing as does Norman Mclean’s A River Runs Through It. In fact, General Stan McChrystal is the senior officer that recommended Twain’s satirical novel about a man from the 19th century, Hank Morgan, traveling back in time to King Arthur’s court. The Leader’s Bookshelf, I confess, would be ho-hum if not for the additional essays that Stavridis and Ancell add to the book. It is these essays on publishing, reading lists, and building a personal library, that raise this book from mediocrity to must have. And here, Robert Ancell pulls his weight, adding a nice cherry on top with an interview with General Mattis.Mattis beats Stavridis in the book department. With some 7,000 titles on his shelves, he probably is the best read military leader—retired or active—out there. In the interview, Mattis mentions books that apply to each level of war. Of note, he recommends Lucas Phillips’ book The Greatest Raid of All. A book about a British raid that shattered the Nazi’s dry docks at Saint-Nazaire, France during World War II, preventing the Germans from using the docks for large battleships for the duration of the war. The raid resulted in no less than five Victoria Crosses. I had never heard of neither the book nor the raid. It is these little-known reading recommendations that make books like this exciting. You simply do not know what you might find.Ironically, the only criticism—or rather, observation—I have about the book is that senior officers still do not carve out enough time to read. And this in a book in which one of the early essays is about “Making Time for Reading.”In one essay, a senior officer admits that while working in the Joint Staff that he only read one book in a year. One book! While another, in her recommendation, wrote only two sentences to praise the work—and even then those two sentences were footnoted. Sigh.Nonetheless, The Leader’s Bookshelf will appeal to all types: The newbie looking for a good book to read and the bibliomaniac who may have read all 49 on the list and owns each first edition, but unaware, or didn’t realize there was just one more interesting title out there.

I cannot recommend this book enough.Amazon users are no doubt aware of the proliferation of books about leadership. What makes the Leader’s Bookshelf different is it provides a rich how-to guide for using books to your advantage and developing nuanced leadership skills. On its surface, the Leader’s Bookshelf appears just to be a book about great books. But it is far more than just a mere listicle in hard binding. Each book overview includes quotes from one of its four-star recommenders, providing a window into their thought processes, and a brief synopsis of the book’s main lessons for the time-starved.Many reviewers, and even the book’s authors, remark on the inclusion of books which are not part of the traditional leadership canon, including Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and Isaac Asimov’s wonderful Foundation series. Finding these hidden gems is another great value of this book because it doesn’t shy away from finding value in unlikely places. The diversity of fiction and non-fiction titles on the list provides variety to the reader, a much-needed quality for those tired of trawling through the rote talking points of conventional leadership books.Beyond the books themselves, the Leader’s Bookshelf provides advice on curating your own library, writing, publishing, and managing your intellectual development in the rigor of our busy lives. These bits of wisdom remind the reader that writing, reflection, and thought leadership are just as important as successfully managing daily work activities.Five stars for utility, originality, and good writing.

Jim Staviridis’ gift to bookavores everywhere, The Leader’s Bookshelf is a difficult one on which to provide notes because it is so packed with great and essential material. What Stavridis and former Navy PAO R. Ancell have done is put together a Top 50 reading list for military leaders--they accomplished this feat by surveying hundreds of senior military leaders. The final list, though, only took into account the inputs of the more than 200 4-star officers surveyed. The authors then compiled the most frequently cited titles and ranked them by frequency of citation.I’ve only read about 12 of the 50 which lean a little too heavily toward the Civil War (5 of the 50, not including three on Lincoln). Each of the 50 books includes a prelude on its importance written by one of the surveyed 4 star officers. The distribution of preludes by service follows:6 Air Force16 Navy9 Marine Corps18 Army1 Coast GuardHe also devotes a chapter to an unofficial survey of junior officers and provides a short summaries of the titles that are most often listed. One of the strengths of this book is that it provides a framework to analyze future books. The author’s systematic approach to reading provides a useful framework for anyone desiring to better digest and use what they read.As a FAO, I enjoyed Staviridis’ analyses that repeatedly noted the need for regional expertise (across the spectrum of history and literature) to better inform national strategic decision-making.Key Quotes:“To be a good soldier you must love the army.
