The author is good at thoughtful phrasing and thought-provoking "snippets" of thought but is not a story teller. The pacing and character development were "off"; it was as if he was trying to "re-tell" a personal story and hurry things along too quickly. The characters flip flopped from being incredibly flawed in a believe-able way and relatable to being incredibly un-likable and lacking any dimension. substance, or backstory. And, while the divine feminine is beautiful and erotic inherently, the author's discriptions of physical intimacy were overthought and descriptive to the point of being unrealistic and seemingly scripted to make a point versus feeling authentic to the narrative. The only reason I gave it 3 starts vs. 2 was because, again the "snippets" of wisdom and observation sprinkled throughout were thought provoking. A list of quotes would've sufficed better than a forced narrative...

I purchased this book in response to a Facebook Ad that included a very nice quote from the book. I thought, Hey it's a little pricier than I like at $11 for an e-book, but that quote looked really good...The story may be good, and there may be great insights in it, however the beginning was told almost entirely in exposition. I couldn't force myself to read past the first 10% of it, so I don't know if the storytelling got any better.

I eagerly awaited the arrival of An Uncommon Bond both because I have great admiration for Jeff Brown's courageous voyage into dissolving the walls between spirituality and emotional healing and because I have always been a miner for great love and a believer that love is a gift that comes from the higher realms. To read his telling of the hero's journey through an experience of profound love that shakes the very foundations of his beingness is to grow more capable of the honesty, courage, humility, unconditionality, and presence needed to even begin to sustain a great love. He writes this story to move us all forward in our vision and capacity for experiencing God/All That is (whatever words that work for you) through the juicy, embodied experience of lovingly bringing ourselves ready to each other, healing into wholeness, vulnerable, present, creative and vibrantly alive.If you are on a path of the heart, an embodied path of spiritual illumination and emotional healing into wholeness, this book is SO for you. It will not disappoint. You will be moved in your depths, subtly or not so subtly transforming your relationship to yourself and to love. I have grown; you will grow; the ones you love will grow; and the world will grow because of this book. I don't mean to exclude you if you don't describe yourself that way, so let me broaden it to anyone who longs for a great love grounded in the everyday yet soaring beyond the mundane and diving into the liquid depths of love's gifts.Do not think that a love like this comes without pain, and oftentimes, it seems, without long periods of separation, as both the person who leaves and the person who is left do the necessary work to heal their fears and emotional wounds/shadow before they can truly ground such a powerful love in everyday life. It would be fantastic to have a telling of the tale from the Sarah's side, as we mostly peak in on her experience through male eyes of the writer and the main character.Imagine...if the world took to this book the way this country has taken to 50 Shades of Grey...what each of our experiences of the world could be! They are twinned opposites. 50 Shades of Grey exploiting the old power over paradigm, the armored warrior and the vulnerable maiden going into battle that causes pain and anguish, punctuated by a sexuality that is not heart centered and certainly not an expression of our connection to the Divine.We, who are un-armoring each in our own ways, will be warmed and soothed at the hearth-fires of this extraordinary book.

It is a juvenile read at best. The puns get annoying after the first few chapters and the book ends very predictably. I fell for the purchase after reading positive reviews on Facebook but this doesn't measure up at all.

Maybe it's because I listened to it, and didn't read it myself. I found the main character to be a bit pathetic, and he kind of went on and on and on. I would not recommend this book.

I was hoping this would be more of a realistic story. But it's a bit too cheesy for me, and hard to swallow.

The raw truth in this writing is palpable. Love in its beauty, glory, brutality and all that teaches. It is a brilliant read that will make you think more than twice about the love bonds in your life.

This writing is hard to endure. A potentially good message gets lost in the annoying word choice from the author.

I'm currently a 1L law student and have used this pocket dictionary a ton since I first got it.As a student I have access to the online edition through Nexis but I've actually found this to be easier since the search tool is not always as good as you would expect and just getting to the online version can take longer than opening up this book most of the time.I also am more of a kinetic learner and have found that the print edition helps me to retain better. Plus I just love books so it's more enjoyable to me to look it up in a book than online (and in law school every small pleasure helps).Definitely recommend it. I've found it useful and more importantly more enjoyable than an online version.UPDATE: I'm now a 3L and it's true that you don't use this dictionary as much you would expect to, especially after 1L. But I do still pull it out every so often, and seeing definitions in print form helps me to remember them.I will say though that part of me wishes I had gone with the full sized version instead of the pocket edition. It is frustrating in some upper level classes, like Property, when you go to look for a word and it isn't there.If you are concerned about the weight you carry, you will find that you will get better at carrying only what you need (or just get used to tugging around a ton of books all the time). So the pocket edition is not essential.Overall, I don't regret buying it as it's been helpful enough to warrant the 35 bucks you will spend on it. Plus Black's is the best law dictionary out there. But, if you are short on money and are trying to decide between the pocket edition and the full edition go with the full edition.

When compared to the newest, 9th edition, this 5th edition puts that one to shame! And, rightfully so! For example: I could NOT believe the definitions in 9th edition book! They are supposed to be 'legal' definitions! Definitions of words when they are used in laws and Courts, not as defined in Websters which is everyday use.Fence, for example in the 5th edition is:A hedge, structure, or partition, erected for the purpose of inclosing a piece of land, or to divide a piece of land ito distinct portions, or to separate two contiguous estates. I sought out this product because it is the last edition before the NWO began changing the dictionary. If you don't believe it, compare the definitions for the USA. The USA or US now ceases to exist legally. Now I must get a ninth edition for the new words that have since been created.This particular book is nicely padded, has a gorgeous cover, and in near perfect shape except for the damage described by seller. Seller nicely wrapped the product for shipping and it arrived within the shipping parameters. I would buy from this seller again since he gave an accurate description and knows how to wrap an item for shipping.

A lot of words, and light weight. Only suggestion: come with tabs to separate the letters. A lot of looking where a word is, but once I put on my own tabs, great book.

First of all the plastic in cover is peaking and when I finally went to use for class I note the pages aren’t in chronological order nor are the definitions defeating the purpose of a DICTIONARY! Now I have to repurchase at a bookstore or more reputable book seller 😔

How does one say he "loves" a dictionary? No such book is ever a page-turner or a "read in bed" tome. On the other hand, when (not if) I have to decode legalese that's thicker than the jungles of Borneo, I'll want this along. I got it because another guy recommended I have a copy at my side. After looking at ~100 terms at near-random, I'm glad I acquired it. I expect to need it. And the $200 price for a new volume is not affordable.

Fancy coffee table book with minimal substance. Nice paper and print quality. It is the contents that is the problem.

A very handsomely produced coffee-table book about the mastery of the Georg Jensen silversmithy. It is though basically a visual celebration and not a history in words. The large size allows selected works from seven designers to be shown with huge enlargements. They are: Jensen; Johan Rohde; Harald Nielsen; Sigvard Bernadotte; Henning Koppel; Vivianna Torun Bulow-Hube; Vernon Panton and a few others in pages near the back of the book in a chapter called Collaboration.I've been buying Jensen silver for years (as my parents did before me) and I love Koppel's work, his chapter in the book was particularly interesting to me though I thought it was a pity some of his watches aren't shown or the stunning Wave bowl.A really nice feature is the use of drawings from the Jensen archive showing various jewelery and silver ware and a photo of the real thing. Other color photos, in close-up, bring out the Jensen craftsmanship. It's worth saying that most of the photos in the book are not hard pin-sharp studio ones but what might be called artistic shots, always tastefully done and I think this makes them come alive and show of character of the work.Despite the excellence of the photography, paper and printing the book has a couple of editorial flaws. The headings and text (fortunately not too much of this) are printed in silver which makes it hard to read in the wrong light, captions are on whole page photos, usually in white but these pages frequently face pages with a photo and generous margins which would easily take the captions.The book is really a snap-shot to show you how wonderful Jensen silver looks. A comprehensive overview of jewelry can be found in Georg Jensen Jewelry (Published in Association with the Bard Graduate Centre for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture) and the only worthwhile history is Georg Jensen: Silver and Design . This was published in 2004 to celebrate a hundred years of the company, beautifully designed with excellent color photos, hard to find on the net but I think all the Jensen shops still sell copies. Avoid the really dreadful looking 1997 Schiffer book (and the reprint).

If you love the great work of sliversmith Georg Jensen, then this book is a must have. It has all the wonderful designs and work of the world famous house. The excellent details and craftsmanship is what makes the designs of Georg Jessen so irrisistable. A lot of the pieces are pieces I have never seen before.

This is a beautiful book! The book is oversized, has silver edged pages and is quite dramatic. Of course, the content is exquisite! My friend said it was the most beautiful coffee table book that she owns -- and she has many.

Virtually no substance, some nice photos, poorly edited, i.e. many pictures were split because of the page/signature layout. Ultimately I returned the book, it added nothing to my library ad wasn't beautiful enpough to be on the coffee table.

This is not a book that I'd normally pick up but when it was chosen for our local One Book, One Community read I thought I'd give it a try. Going into it, all I knew was that it was about a hostage situation involving a young Canadian journalist in Somalia. What I didn't expect was how riveting a book could be even though I already knew the outcome.A House in the Sky starts out showing Lindhout's childhood with her sometimes turbulent family life in Alberta, Canada. As a child she eagerly spends her meager pocket money on old National Geographic magazines and fantasizes about traveling to the far reaches of the world. At the age of 19, she earns enough money waitressing to spread her wings and make her first trip to Venezuela. There her love of travel is sparked and she continues to travel to far-off places including Pakistan, Ethiopia, Syria, Burma ... The more she travels the more dangerous some of her destination choices become, especially for a woman often traveling alone. While in Kabul, Afghanistan, and with no formal training, she decides to take up photography and journalism as a way to fund her passion for travel. In order to get bigger, more newsworthy stories she decides to go into more dangerous regions which leads her to Mogadishu, Somalia in 2008 - an area rife with danger and where most reporters choose not to venture.Accompanying her to Somalia is her former boyfriend Nigel Brennan, an experienced photographer from Australia. Shortly after arriving in Somalia they are taken hostage and, in total, they are held captive in Somalia for a staggering 460 days. During these months they are tortured - both physically and mentally, starved, beaten and worse. Many scenes aren’t for the faint of heart and knowing that this wasn’t a work of fiction caused me to be much more emotional than I had anticipated.Admittedly, some of Lindhout's decisions are naïve and impetuous and I had heard from other readers that witnessing her make these decisions frustrated them. I didn't have the same reaction. Instead, I thought she described her thought processes (and past experiences) well which enabled me to understand why she made those decisions. Still, it wasn't easy to read. I knew she'd be captured (and live through it). I knew there would, most likely, be violence and abuse and yet even though I knew generally how things would pan out for her I found myself on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book (and often hoping she'd somehow miraculously make different decisions).Lindhout endured repeated horrors, deprivation, starvation and torture - both physical and psychological. And yet what will stay with me is her compassion and forgiveness towards her young tormentors (many of whom were teens and young men) and even Nigel, her friend and fellow prisoner, who made some decisions that didn't sit well with me. Lindhout showed compassion and forgiveness far surpassing anything I think I could manage if I were put in the same situation.The fact that Lindhout survives is astounding but what is even more amazing is how, through months of pain and torture, she was able to keep her wits about her by imagining her House in the Sky - a place she could go to in her mind to get away from the horror she lived with on a daily basis. She is a testament to the power of the human mind, soul and the desire to survive.This well-written book will pull you into Lindhout’s small world and while you may not agree with some of her decisions, you will be captivated by this book. Readers will witness vulnerability, strength, compassion and the strength of the human body and spirit. They will experience the roller coaster of emotions with Lindhout - from fear, despair, anger, horror but always with a glimmer of hope. Even though she had such a devastating experience in Somalia, Lindhout has proven that we have a choice in how life's events will affect our future. She has chosen to bring something positive to the people of Somalia via her organization, Global Enrichment Foundation which provides university scholarships to Somali women.This is a book that will stay with me for a very long time. I am eager to meet Lindhout this fall when her book tour comes through my area. It will be a privilege to meet her and I hope that she realizes how much her tragedy has impacted others.I highly recommend this book and give it my rare 5 stars.

I finished this book in a couple of days, mainly because it was so hard to put down. Then I decided to wait several days before writing this review because I wanted to be fair to the author, Amanda Lindhout. I won't spend a lot of time covering the events of the 15 months Lindhout was in captivity since many reviews have done that. While I read the book, I alternated between disgust at what was happening to Lindhout and anger at her for putting herself in that position. I would love to know what credentialed journalists think of her and what she did. She fantasized about being a war reporter, took a flying short course in photography, and then immersed herself in one of the most dangerous parts of the world. For all practical purposes, Lindhout was completely unprepared for what she did. This book reminds me a lot of Cheryl Strayed's book Wild. This story has almost become a genre: people putting themselves in difficult situations with little or no preparation. All of that said, no one deserves what happened to Lindhout, and I admire her ability to mentally overcome the abuse she endured. I also admire what she did after she was rescued building a foundation rather than merely running out to the speaker's circuit to profit from her spupidity. To say this is a great story seems a bit unseemly since it is so brutally violent. This I guarantee: you will be riveted while reading Lindhout's story.

This book documents the kidnapping of Amanda Lindhout and a fellow journalist in Somalia, but the first part of the book also details the author's childhood and other travels. The background is essential to the main story because it gives the reader a sense of who the author is, her curiosity for the world, her adventurous nature and makes you relate to her and empathize with her during her kidnapping.There has been some criticism of the author and her naiveté in going to a place like Somalia, but there are two things I would like to mention that made this book incredible and different:1. At no point does the author indulge in self-pity, which considering her circumstances, is an incredible feat. She describes her kidnapping in vivid detail including the emotional and physical abuse that she suffers, but there is no under-lying attempt to gain sympathy or self-pity. She comes across as incredibly strong and that one does feel immense sympathy for the horrendous circumstances that she was in is due to the nature of what she underwent.2. The author also has incredible control over her portrayal of Somalia and its people. Somalia is a foreign country to most people, considering that it is not a tourist destination and any news coming from the country generally tends to be about violence and war. In that situation, it is very easy for unaware readers to make vast generalizations about Somalians and the country itself based on Lindhout's experience. But she makes sure to never make any generalization about the country, and goes as far as to attempt to understand the reasons behind her kidnappers' actions. After the reading the book, I got a sense that Somalia is a dangerous country due to its political circumstances but I made no other assumptions about it.Above all I really recommend this book as a story of human survival and resilience amidst the harshest of circumstances.

Was not hoping for much. The world of books on Amazon is large, and clogged with five star reviews of dreck. This one read like a long short story: you knew more or less where everything was going and it got there quickly with relatively few surprises. But unlike so many books on Amazon, the quality of quitting didn't sag after the first third, and the story didn't run out of ideas in the last third. Everything turned out amazing for everyone, who were all exceptional, which is grating, but in its defence it had honestly telegraphed that likelihood from the beginning. And the protagonists voice and the characterizations kept being warm and funny. Though not so many surprises, and a slight surfeit of twenty-something gee-whiz for this old dude, I enjoyed the enthusiasm, and the commitment to decent writing. I jumped right into the free sample of the next book, liked it and bought it, for far more than this one cost (hmm, how did that happen).

I admit that I picked this up because of the peculiar title. Turns out the characters were just as curious about this bookstore as I was—and rightly so!Set in San Francisco, Sloan does a pretty good caricature of the Bay Area startup scene, and even throws big tech players like Google into the mix—the latter actually plays a surprisingly key role here! I’ve only been living in the Bay Area for about three months now (at the time of this review), but even I had to appreciate the nods to the neighborhoods I’ve visited.Clay Jannon is a semi-fresh college grad hoping to find some footing in a post-Recession jobscape. He’s likeable and relatable—the roommate we’ve all met or had in our early twenties. He’s self-depracting and also not particularly talented. This isn’t a harsh critique of his character, by the way. In fact, he makes this admission several times throughout the novel.But what Clays is really good at is making friends with extremely gifted specialists—all of whom play a part in the larger story....and that leads me to my biggest critique.Because for every obstacle Clay faces, he also “just so happens” to have a major resource at his disposal that can solve the problem. So even though I thought the story was adorably quirky, insightful, and tender, there were a lot of plot points that wrapped up a little too neatly for me.Also, if you happen to be a professional codebreaker, this book will either pique your interest or frustrate you to no end. I am not a professional codebreaker, so I found this aspect of the book both entertaining and suspenseful.My final verdict is that Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore is a whimsical read that’s sure to please book lovers of all backgrounds—but especially if they live in California.

I picked up this book one day because it looked like something that I might enjoy. Then life occurred and it became buried in my TBR stacks and I forgot about it. It wasn't until I was researching books for my book group that I remembered it. Then it was offically chosen and it finally got its turn.I geniunely enjoyed this book. I found myself picturing the story while reading it and I longed to see this bookstore in real life. The idea of a bookstore containing unusual books that most people have never heard of is exciting to me. It definitely makes me wonder what gems may be hidden in my nearest bookstore.I am rating this book Four Stars because it drug in some spots and was predictable. I enjoyed it but I did have a few moments where I felt like I was reading an advertisement rather than a novel. The characters were likeable and relatable. The premise was fantastic and I would love to find a bookstore like the one from the story. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I will be looking into his other titles. My favorite line in this book is, "And if you think that's cool, you're over thirty." Robin Sloan has successfully written a book chock full of fun, particularly if you are a millennial with a propensity to change the world though technology and perhaps live forever drinking kale smoothies. I was a little disappointed as I searched for an underlying story, but continued reading enjoying the delightful way the romance and adventure unfolded without one. I appreciated Sloan's references to a fantasy task force, but truthfully got a little bogged down when he used pages of fantasy metaphor. But then, I'm over thirty.

Lately, I've come across some real clinkers -- so much so that I sent out an email query to solicit recommendations for something good to read. A buddy out in CA recommended this one, and I'm really glad he did.Sloan's story is tight, well-paced, and interesting. He uses language beautifully. There's humor and its more dignified cousin, wit. There are solid, vivid characters. Even minor characters are painted with enough detail to be interesting.One thing: something about the title made me think of a YA (or even younger) novel, but while the... romantic aspects of this book are very understated (and thus appropriate, I think, for a younger audience) I don't the plot or characters would be that appealing to the under eighteen set. Maybe I'm wrong about that, and in any case it's not a criticism, merely an observation. Anyway, it's a book adults will enjoy.Another thing: something about the title also implied a fantasy novel, but, while quirky, nothing in the book actually violates Reality As We Know It. Fantasy novels figure in the story to a modest degree, but this isn't a fantasy novel. You certainly don't have to be "into" fantasy to enjoy the book.One final thing: I thought I guessed the ending. Then I thought I guessed another, equally plausible ending. I was delightfully wrong both times.
