Pros:-Seems to be the most current guide for SF as of my purchase date (July 2011).-LP has always been my go-to guide for both domestic and international travel. Its recommendations may not always be the best, but I think LP is the most consistently reliable guidebook. I appreciate that LP also segments restaurants/bars/accomodations by budget/midrange/high end so you can choose yourself rather than other guidebooks typically gear the entire book toward one type of traveler (Rough Guide for budget, Dorling Kindersley for higher end).-Guide features a pull-out map which was helpful.Cons:-I did not see (and I could have missed it) any public transportation maps, such as the underground or bus system. Some underground and trolley stops were marked on the pull-out maps but there was not seperate public transport guide/maps. I used the GPS function on my smartphone for bus routes, etc.-I agree with the previoius reviewer's (J. Wong's) comment about comparing LP to Trip Advisor. I have consistently found that the top Trip Advisor choices for a city are not featured in LP.

Badly organized and uninspiring.

Added little or nothing useful to the standard publication on SF. Seems to be an attempt to put out yet another book to sell. I threw it out.

In preparing for a trip to Hungary, I examined thoroughly the choices for Budapest.My favorite guidebook series has been Lonely Planet, and the Budapest Lonely Planet is fairly helpful. Although it doesn't give as thorough a treatment on accomodations, the book gives a lot of travel hints and secret. I found its facts for the visitors to be the most helpful, and the maps (placed at the very back of the book) to be the easiest to use. The frommer book, on the other hand, put the maps close to the section of the book referring to it. The organization of LP makes it easiest to use in the field; they tend to have the best background, history and cultural information. LP was particularly good about including rules, regulations and things like closing times. ON the other hand, there are not many photos, and they don't plan as many walking tours as the frommer book does. I didn't find the written descriptions that engaging, although the cultural background seemed well done.The Frommer's Budapest book (3rd edition) gave the best information about finding and choosing accomodations, but the book has no pictures and aside from a nice subway cover on the inside cover, the maps are hard to find and not very easy to use. Frommer's gives excellent information about prices and shops and restaurants; it's almost a guide to buying things rather than a tour book. I didn't find it particularly thorough about travel information, customs, or those sorts of details. That is not entirely fair. They have a nice section in the front a kind of "best of" list for things in budapest. The nice thing about the book is that it recommends things to do if you have only one day, three days or a week. They also suggested some itineraries for walking tours. The Fodor's Budapest pocket reference is drab and not full of much information. Don't get it. The Eyewitness Travel Guide on Budapest by Tadeusz Olszanski is the most eye-catching and the least helpful. It contains lots of graphics and diagrams and maps, and not too much information. The multitude of pictures are helpful in describing architecture, geography and art. On the other hand, its information on accomodations is very limited. Don't get me wrong; it's a beautiful and interesting book; it just is not as helpful as the other three. And it is two years old. I'm not necessarily saying that this book is bad, merely that it may not help you very much on the excursion. The Budapest: A Critical Guide by Andras Torok, 4th edition is a less complete and more personal account of things to do in Budapest. The other books were like encyclopedias, but this book was just a few personal recommendations about things to do and places to stay. Also, the writing for this book seems to be better than the other books. If you already are a little familiar with Budapest, but just want to learn about new and undiscovered places, this might be an excellent book. It certainly covers most of the bases, but it just doesn't try to list a huge number of accomodations or restaurants. I ended up buying the Frommer's and a used copy of the Eyewitness travel guide.

I've seen several reviews for other Lonely Planet Discover guides where people seemed unpleasantly surprised by what they got. Discover guides are not the classic Lonely Planet guides; they're a new series that was started a couple of years ago, and the originals are still being published as well.Lonely Planet describes the classic style as "the original; comprehensive; adventurous", while the Discover guides are "best-of; photo-packed; inspirational". In other words, the Discover guides don't have as much information as the original guides. What they do have is a lot of photographs and an attractive format that highlights don't-miss attractions. There's enough overlap in content that you probably won't want to buy both guides, and choosing between them will come down to individual preferences.One place where the Discover guide cuts back is on accommodations; there are only six pages of hotel listings, plus two pages of more general information. I was perfectly happy with this, since I had already chosen accommodations independently and didn't need a lot of hotel details taking up space in (and adding weight to) my travel guide. And the Discover guide does have a useful chart comparing the pros and cons of different neighbourhoods of San Francisco from the perspective of where to stay: whether they're close to sights, easy to access by public transportation, active or quiet at night, etc. This is more than enough for me when I'm just looking for a decent place to stay in a North American city; I expect that pretty much any hotel will turn out to be acceptable. It's only when I'm travelling farther afield to places where I might face language or cultural barriers that I worry more about every detail. I don't know whether I'd buy a Discover guide for, say, Egypt, but for San Francisco it worked for me.I've also found that I really appreciate the photo-heavy, highlights-focused approach when I'm just visiting a city for a short time. I might read a travel guide in great detail if I'm going somewhere for three weeks, but three days is a completely different matter. I want to be shown top attractions in an appealing format, and quickly; I'm not going to invest more time in reading the guidebook than I'll be spending on the trip. The Discover San Francisco guide does exactly what I want: I can quickly flip through it to get a sense of what the top sights are and decide what I actually want to see. The photos help a lot with this, and the various attractions also seem to be split up more into individual chunks, rather than listed as part of a paragraph, which again makes it friendlier for skimming rather than sitting down and reading.I've so far used this for a day trip to San Francisco with hardly any planning, and it worked out well; I was satisfied with the attractions that I saw and the limited time that I had to put into doing research beforehand. We didn't even plot out our whole day in advance, but chose a couple of major sights and then used the guidebook to hit other highlights nearby. If that's the kind of trip that you're looking for--a quick visit without a lot of advance planning--then this may be the book for you. But if you want to research every detail ahead of time, then you'll probably prefer the more thorough classic guide.Even for my purposes, this Discover guide wasn't perfect, though. For one thing, I would have liked a transit map or some other useful reference on the back inside cover, instead of just advertisements for other Lonely Planet guides. I also would have liked a reference section of maps at the back of the book, instead of just the pull-out map. There are neighbourhood maps in various sections, but I sometimes wanted an overview, and I find it awkward to deal with a fold-out map while simultaneously walking around carrying a guidebook. Finally, I would have liked the individual attractions to be indexed more precisely to the various maps. The maps have an alpha-numeric grid system around the edges, so why not make use of it by specifying the location of each attraction? I've seen this done in the Mini Rough Guide to New York, so it's not unheard of, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to have caught on.Despite these issues, though, I'm satisfied with this book overall. I certainly prefer it to the Frommer's San Francisco guide, which seems to target a more upscale (read: free with their money) audience. This Discover guide achieved its goal of providing an appealing, photo-heavy book that quickly helped me pick out the top attractions that I wanted to see.

What made this book such an impressive work is the author's ability to integrate all the factors involved from the land, to the weapons, the animals, the Comanches, the Europeans and Americans. This is an era of which I had only a glossed over understanding. While my history texts as a kid tended to stress manifest destiny and recent understandings seemed to focus on the "noble savage" the answers, as usual, reflect a blending of the various points of view. S.C. Gwynne does a masterful job of pulling it all together.

We live in Oklahoma - the middle of modern day Comanche County. My best friend growing up was the great-granddaughter of Chief Quannah Parker. She was even named after Cynthia Ann Parker. She has been my friend for over 60+ years. Therefore, I knew some of the history of the Comanche way of life, but from their side. I still cherish those memories of the stories told to me by her Grandmother (which was really her great-aunt, but called Grandmother by Comanche culture). She told of how afraid of the soldiers they were as children on the reservation near Fort Sill. I was a child hearing these stories, not really understanding... My family (white settlers) had settled in Oklahoma Territory from the Llano, Texas area before the turn of the century. They had lived thru the battles and loss of lives. Some went on to Arizona, but that's another story.EMPIRE OF THE SUMMER MOON really awakened some of those memories - but from both sides. It was a horrible time for the settlers and the Indians! I have read many books on the subject, but this was the BEST, most accurate account, from both sides. It gives true documentation of events as they happened. We have given this book to so many family members and friends. A few weeks ago, we gave it to a Comanche friend. He said he learned so much about his people from this book. We HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone wanting to know the true history of the west from both sides.

My only complaint about this book is redundancy. That said, I couldn't put this down. It invaded my thoughts and dreams. There is such a deep sadness about this chapter if American History and this book just crystallized the impossible situation.I live in the area of Texas and Oklahoma covered in the book. I have family papers used by relatives three generations ago to establish Indian connections for the purpose of personal gain. I have visited the forts and parks, missions, and roadside historical signs related to this time period. This book helped me put the pieces together.If you think one group is all bad and the other all good, you will hate this book. If you want to take a hard look at what happens when cultures clash, this book tackles the subject in a compelling and interesting way.

I normally get all books from the library, which is where I first got this one. In the past 15 years I have actually bought to keep in my small "library" 2 books--Carl Sagan's "The Demon Haunted World," & this one. Published in 2010, it is the only book I've ever found that tells the history of American expansion into the west without a strong bias toward whites, and with phenomenal documentation (nearly a quarter of the volume is a listing of citations).The fact that for over 40 years I've lived in the middle of the area primarily concerned makes it more personal to me, as well as that one of my grandmothers was born in "Indian Territory" (as Oklahoma was called at first), & my mother told of some of her childhood memories of meeting Indians in her home town as a young girl, all add to my own interest. But the main attraction is the unbiased telling of the story, "no punches pulled." The author doesn't shy away from the details of the brutallity on both sides, so it can be disturbing at times; but it also shows the admirable aspects of both sides.There is no question that Quanah was a truly great leader, but you'll have to read the whole story to understand just how great.

One of my favorite books this year and an interesting account of an often forgotten person. I read the novel just before my trip to Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Canyon, Texas. History came alive as I relived the battles while hiking along the canyon and visiting the highly acclaimed Panhandle-Plains Museum in Canyon, Texas. Quanah Parker is an interesting, complex historical figure whose journey from feared Comanche warrior to respected politician is very well presented here.

After finishing this book, by sheer coincidence I came across Dances with Wolves as I was cruising channels. When you put the movie (about the Sioux) next to the this book - about the Comanches - you begin to realize how good it truly is and how substance it has. You might expect any story about Indians clashing with whites to leave you rooting hopelessly for the natives, but this account doesn't have that effect. The author wants you to admire the "Lords of the Plains", but he makes clear how brutal and ruthless they could be to whites and Indians alike.The Comanches were a ferocious and highly skilled band of warriors that were only defeated because of the better guns the whites had. I never imagined a tribe of 40,000 could have so thoroughly dominated such a large swath of land for hundreds of years. There was no "trail of tears" for these guys. So unflinching is the book that at times I could feel the terror I'm sure existed in the heart of every white that dared to settle near Comancheria. You're left wondering why anyone would choose to risk life and scalp - your own and your children's - to live on the barren plains of northwest Texas. That's an important question that the book leaves unanswered.If you want to learn about cowboys and Indians this book is essential. I read Blood and Thunder and this book tells a very different story. Both are excellent but if you read only about the Navajos you don't come close to getting a full picture of this, our own Hundred Years' War.

Rafe Esquith has taught at Hobart Elementary School for twenty-two years. He is the only teacher in history to receive the National Medal of Arts. I read this with my co-workers at the school I am employed at. Rafe is a SUPERSTAR teacher and I would love to do half of what he has done. I don't know how he has time for his wife and kids with all of his time being spent with his students. I wonder how the students feel when they move on to the next teacher and its nothing like 5th grade with Rafe. I did get some great ideas to try out in the classroom, but I feel he is a bit too over the top for me.

I very much enjoyed this book. In a world where it feels like teachers are blaming everything on parents, and parents feel like teachers are not motivated/doing enough, Rafe's experience is refreshing and brings us back to the basics. I got many ideas for my 4 year-old upbringing. The most valued lesson: money isn't everything (it just has be to put on the right place), but quality time is. Highly recommended reading!

I absolutely love this book! Arrived in record time, in good packaging & in great condition. This book is a must read if you are just starting out or even if you have been teaching for years. There are so many ideas to use from this book in your own classroom, I have placed post it notes all throughout the book to reference it again when school starts!

I bought this because it was a required text in one of my classes. I'm an elementary education major. This book isn't the most interesting read but is so incredibly helpful for anyone looking to become a teacher or someone who is already in the classroom. It has a lot of great new ideas and teaching strategies as well as just tips and tricks for classroom management. I know this is one of the books that I will keep as a resource once I graduate and start teaching.

Read this half-heartedly after a disheartening school year at an urban school. It was awesome. There are definitely at least 3 things that I'm planning to implement in my classroom (the microeconomy, kohlberg's 6 levels, and movies).It felt great reading a book from a teacher who truly understands. I've been to my share of ivy league colleges and such, and despite how wonderful my professors may have been when they WERE in the profession, to hear from a guy who constantly sticks to it is the best.Especially as Common Core is rolling around the corner, Rafe has a lot of practical wisdom and understanding. I was thankful to have read this over the summer.

This book was not bad. It didn't wow me like I had hoped it would though. There was something a little too self-congratulatory about the narrators voice that didn't really hook me like it should have.

I read "hair's on fire" for a class I'm taking on my way to being a math teacher.Rafe concentrates on developing his students as human beings. All the subjects he teaches are geared towards developing character, and developing developing character allows a student to excel in all the subjects.I wonder if there is room to take a similar holistic approach in a high school math class?

I really like this book. Esquith challenges our educational model and provides a guide for what could be.I won't try to say that his exact methods will work in every class for every teacher. Rafe is clearly a gifted teacher and a nearly perfect leader in the classroom. Alas, not all of us are as gifted in the same ways.That said, this is a great book that points out HOW DIFFERENT our educational system could be. He has turned on its ear several HUGE assumptions in our educational system. I feel this is an inspirational book that will hopefully give educators the courage to make bold moves in their own classrooms.

Very useful--I work from home as an indie, and am on a shoe-string budget. I had problems with Windows Live Mail freezing, and not loading, and switched to gmail for my work, This book was a worthwhile investment for me, as I am now getting the best use out of a free email service that I had all along as part of creating a professional page for Google+. All my email for 3 different emaill providers arrives in my box like it should, and I and when a question arises, this book has the answer.

This book is fantastic. It was just what I needed. Agter having a university email account for over 12 years the university decided to switch to a google service. That was fine except they also decided that the emeritus staff would not be getting this service and that there would be no training classes. At first all I was able to do was send and receive emails and had no clue how to move what I had accummulated over the years. Because our service was propritary I was not able to import my files. This book saved my sanity. I was able to save everything and learn the ins and out of gmail in a very short time.

While the information is useful, the book is not laid out (graphically) in a professional manner. It appears to be a masters' thesis which has been pasted into a paperback book format. Headings are misplaced on pages, etc. Eventually, though, given enough time, you can gain significant knowledge about how to whip this puppy. Yes, you should buy it.

This was an excellent book. Having been an Outlook user for over a decade, I did not find Gmail as easy to use, because I kept trying to use it like Outlook. Once I understood how Gmail works, I am now much more comfortable with using the free email that came with my phone. I hate to admit that I had to read a book to make it work, but it did work. I will be slowly transitioning many emails and subscriptions over to Gmail and limiting my need for the paid email.

A one-day read. I made my selections from Gmail's offerings of settings, and haven't changed them substantially since. It explains the basic logic of the user interface, plus it gave enough technical detail that I was able to reset the outgoing server to enable use of my personal website's email along with Gmail - I wasn't able to find adequate guidance on that from a general internet search. Gmail really is all you need, as long as you know how to use its features.

This helped, although there's still a lot I don't understand. Still better than "Outlook not responding"

The book is very confusing to me. I want to be able to look things up in the back of the book and go to the page that explains how to perform the task I'm looking for. This book does not do that for me.

Simple in 268 pages? Images and text not helpful. No screen shots and way too much detail for a so-called simple guide and...well I won't go on. DO NOT BUY IT!

My toddler is absolutely obsessed with the "Happy" song. Did you know there's a 24-hour "Happy" music video? Neither did I, until my son randomly heard Happy on the radio and began insisting we listen to it all day, every day. Seriously, we play the 24-hour music video every waking moment of every day. I now tell time in Pharrell Hours (at the top of every hour of the music video, Pharrell is on). I've forgotten what other music sounds like. It's my son's favorite everything: song, show, color, food, animal--If you ask him what his favorite of any of these is, the answer is Happy. Always Happy. And he hasn't even seen Despicable Me 2.Anyway, if you have a toddler as obsessed with Happy as mine, this book is a must. Now we not only listen to Happy on repeat even minute of the day, we also read the book version anywhere from 10-75 times per day. The lyrics of the song are written in fun, bold letters on the pages, and there are pictures of cute kids in festive outfits. We discuss the lyrics (well of course) plus what the kids are doing and wearing. This book is also a good way to learn the lyrics of the song (although not as good as listening to the song on repeat until it's burned into your brain).

My 16 month old absolutely loves this book. You can’t help but sing the song, clap, and wiggle to the lyrics of this popular pop song. My son is especially captivated by all the kids doing things to act out the words in the book. Definitely recommend!

A truly delightful book - it made me smile, over and over again! - written by a guy who knows about "Happy" and can share it! I admire Pharrell and I enjoyed and RECOMMEND his book - to parents, grandparents, nursery schools, kindergartens, and children's rooms in hospitals - it really will make YOU "Happy"!!

Love this! Pharrell did an excellent job with promoting "Happy" with this book. I love the personal letter at the end. We gave this as a baby shower gift among other awesome books.

We love song books but I am not so sure about this one. My toddler does pick up this book on her own and songs it too.

My daughter all the time takes the book and says me “mom, sing!”. One book it’s not only to read. You can use your imagination singing!

Best when read with the music playing in the background. Otherwise the lyrics don't make much sense. But the photos/images are great!

My 18 month old granddaughters favorite book. She walks around so big Happy. Can't beat that!!

This is an incredibly eye-opening book about all that's wrong with international adoption. The main argument of the book is that western demand for children, and/or for a heroic Christian adoption experience, has a distorting effect on the number of "orphans" available for adoption in developing countries. If you build it, they will come--that is, orphanages attract desperately poor parents to drop off their kids. Highly paid adoption workers get parents to relinquish kids, without their fully understanding that adoption is permanent. What is needed is often not adoption but assistance to whole families. In other places, the problem is not so much poverty but the stigma attached to single motherhood. That's it in a tiny nutshell--there is a massive amount of information in this book, and it's not easily summarized.This is all extremely compelling. The book is very thoroughly researched and clearly written. The one thing I can't say for it is that it is balanced. We don't get stories of needed and successful adoption to balance the stories of unneeded and corrupt adoption. So basically the reader is forced to read another book. Perhaps that's OK, though. By writing a polemic, Joyce forces us to completely rethink the ethics of adoption, instead of reaching a bland "sometimes good, sometimes bad" conclusion.As for all the negative reviews--Joyce steps on a lot of toes in this book. Read it for yourself and ignore the outrage. It will change your whole outlook on international adoption if you started out (like me) thinking it must be mostly humanitarian and necessary.

As a soon-to-be foster parent and Christian I felt like this book was a must-read. Whether or not you agree with all pieces of it, I read this book as a means of seeking out truth, even if/when the truth that is found is damaging, inconvenient, and requires soul-searching. I recommend this book to anyone interested in adoption, social justice, and women's rights--whether or not you are a person of faith. The book has been a bit of a springboard for me, leading me to other adoption reform groups & adoptee groups such as Lost Daughters and Land of Gazillion Adoptees. Read it with an open mind, follow-up with your own research, and be prepared to be challenged and grow.

This book def highlights the "white savior complex" "Evangelical Christian complex" of so many well intended actions. Just the fact that so many so-called "orphans" aren't in fact orphans was enlightening. How would Americans react if citizens of other nations sought to adopt our "orphans"? With outrage and horror, no doubt. This book is highly recommended.

Given the separation of Mexican children from parents, this book about adoption as a strategy and obsession by SOME Christian churches in the recent past points the way we SHOULDN'T adopt. This is an antidote to romanticizing "saving" other people's children. Having experienced this with my own daughter's adoption program, this should be required reading for all who work in this field.

This is a through researched exploration of the Evangelical adoption movement that has taken off in the last eight years. It also exposes a lot of the corruption in the adoption industry in general. Harrowing and necessary reading.

Eye-opening and heart-breaking. I subscribed to many of the fallacies that Joyce uncovers before reading this book. I really see the process differently now, and I think adoption, especially international adoption, needs a major re-do. Seriously important book.

People considering adoption, particularly international adoption need to read this book before making a decision to move forward. It is a painful tale of Christian over-reach and individual glorification in the name of "saving" orphans who often aren't orphans at all.

I wish there was an updated version or at least errdata page and the header files doesn't work(portf.h)I don't think I can continue with this book as NOTHING works.

First and foremost this, book is a great resource for understanding how to program audio. It is area is the severely lacking in the computing world, so every little bit helps.But there are some issues.1. If you get the Kindle version you don't get the accompanying DVD data. However, if you contact MIT Press, like I did, they are pretty good at getting you a copy of the disc for free. And you must get the DVD, there is a lot of great information on it.2. The book does start out on the right foot with an introduction to C. I think this is important because I think the bulk of people interested in this book are probably Digital Audio Production guys who are Power Users but might not have done real programming. But even if you are coming from an experienced C programmer angel I don't think it hurts. However, I believe it is important that the book starts off giving an introduction to C because it sets the tone for the book, and where the book should stand out. There are no GOOD intro to audio programming books. Most books for the audio programming are usually geared toward advanced programming or signal processing, or are so watered down the as you give a non-audio interested programer the basis to get a job done. This is a problem, because sure you can fine plenty of intro to programming books that are happy to teach you some graphics programming along the way, but never for audio. It is ambitious this book tries to take this route.3. Unfortunately, the code style doesn't skill to that newbie-to-digital-audio style.First, this is an edited anthology book and it seems that every author for every section decided to do their own coding style for each section. And not just for the code itself, but also for compiling the code [the book switches from MAKE to Scons and back and never explains why]. The problem is, as should as you understand the code from one section, you end up having to relearn everything for the next because the next author has changed the code style. I don't understand why the authors didn't try to correct for this. Plus the authors don't stick to proper code conventions. A good example of each of these problem is the change between chapter 5 to 6. The code from C to C++ without any reason, but what makes it extra annoying, is that that C++ in improperly formatted ( Example: All the headers for all the classes are in 1 file. ) It is hard to tell, if it was supposed to be poorly written C code in C++ files, or a C++ program poorly organized and written to act like C without making use of classes.Second, the code style itself, doesn't stick to simple easy to read conventions. The authors get into a bad habit of using more advanced C/C++ tricks to write less code [highly abbreviated variable names, Ternary operations instead of true If/Else code blocks]. Sure it is good for them, bad for the learner when you are trying to learn everything step-by-step [ And for you 'advance programmers' who scoff at reading someone complaining about those things, remember you were a newbie once too] You should NEVER write optimized code in any form when you are trying to teach something! That is irresponsible, and disrespectful toward your students who are trying to learn.Third the end goals seem to change, as they are teaching you. You first learn how to generate a simple realtime sound with PortAudio [the ultimate goal], but then everything become about generating a wave file for output and the reader is left pondering how to generated more then one sound at a time and keep it going. When they do get to how to make a realtime plug-in, you aren't taught how to create a simple synthesizer, you just end up making a delay line. Sure a delay line is important, but it doesn't teach me, how I need to manage MIDI and generate sound continuously...Anyway, if you can deal with those 3 things then you will get a lot out of this book and don't get me wrong there in this book.However, this book really needed a few more revisions to be everything it could be. Maybe someday that will happen.

Not so much a book as it is a collection of chapters that relate to the subject of programming audio applications. There isn't really a clear direction and subjects tend to change drastically from chapter to chapter. Still, it is full of really cool algorithms and contains lots of information (with great graphics) to get you started in audio DSP. My only real complaint is the example code uses horrible style and is devoid of comments.An example where multiple variables are declared using vague names:double r, rsq, rr, costh, scal;Or sometimes they use comments but the variable names are meaningless.:a = exp(-k/T); //calc the constant ratio value

I've just reviewed Designing Audio Objects for Max/MSP and Pd and referenced this book so it's only fair I review this as well. This book is not very beginner friendly despite the learning C chapters in the beginning. If anything it's more of a refresher on C. So, that being said I highly recommend this book as a pure beginner intro C Primer Plus (5th Edition) to C very big but thorough. This book is such an essential part of my library now and such a valuable resource in the world of DSP and what goes on in the engine of your favorite DSP environments. If you are interested in how Csound or Max works under the hood or just want to start trying to contribute to open source projects yourself this is such a great place to start! My appreciation goes to all of the authors involved in this project!

As a seasoned coder new to audio processing I give this book 5 big stars. It explains through numerous coding examples and projects all of the major aspects of coding for audio. It also provides cross-platform libraries you will find essential, as well as extra chapters not included in the book via the included DVD. I was able to synthesize my own sound waves, and even write my own wav file player within a week.That said I would not recommended this book to someone who is unfamiliar with coding. The authors do try to give an introduction to c programming, however I found that the examples in this book would be very difficult for a new programmer to be able to follow, let alone compile, given that there are many libraries which must be linked etc. Personally though, I loved that upon opening the book for the first time I could flip through the pages gingerly and see tons and tons of straight c code. The theory is there, but more importantly so is it's practical application, and that's what makes this book awesome.

This may be the only book you'll need on audio programming. It has a C primer in Chp 1, then it goes into each of the cornerstones of audio programming... faders, effects, FFT,... everything! This is one hefty book. It should keep you busy for a long time. The enclosed DVD is also very thorough. Just get this book before you buy anything else.
