This is an incredibly eye-opening book about all that's wrong with international adoption. The main argument of the book is that western demand for children, and/or for a heroic Christian adoption experience, has a distorting effect on the number of "orphans" available for adoption in developing countries. If you build it, they will come--that is, orphanages attract desperately poor parents to drop off their kids. Highly paid adoption workers get parents to relinquish kids, without their fully understanding that adoption is permanent. What is needed is often not adoption but assistance to whole families. In other places, the problem is not so much poverty but the stigma attached to single motherhood. That's it in a tiny nutshell--there is a massive amount of information in this book, and it's not easily summarized.This is all extremely compelling. The book is very thoroughly researched and clearly written. The one thing I can't say for it is that it is balanced. We don't get stories of needed and successful adoption to balance the stories of unneeded and corrupt adoption. So basically the reader is forced to read another book. Perhaps that's OK, though. By writing a polemic, Joyce forces us to completely rethink the ethics of adoption, instead of reaching a bland "sometimes good, sometimes bad" conclusion.As for all the negative reviews--Joyce steps on a lot of toes in this book. Read it for yourself and ignore the outrage. It will change your whole outlook on international adoption if you started out (like me) thinking it must be mostly humanitarian and necessary.

As a soon-to-be foster parent and Christian I felt like this book was a must-read. Whether or not you agree with all pieces of it, I read this book as a means of seeking out truth, even if/when the truth that is found is damaging, inconvenient, and requires soul-searching. I recommend this book to anyone interested in adoption, social justice, and women's rights--whether or not you are a person of faith. The book has been a bit of a springboard for me, leading me to other adoption reform groups & adoptee groups such as Lost Daughters and Land of Gazillion Adoptees. Read it with an open mind, follow-up with your own research, and be prepared to be challenged and grow.

This book def highlights the "white savior complex" "Evangelical Christian complex" of so many well intended actions. Just the fact that so many so-called "orphans" aren't in fact orphans was enlightening. How would Americans react if citizens of other nations sought to adopt our "orphans"? With outrage and horror, no doubt. This book is highly recommended.

Given the separation of Mexican children from parents, this book about adoption as a strategy and obsession by SOME Christian churches in the recent past points the way we SHOULDN'T adopt. This is an antidote to romanticizing "saving" other people's children. Having experienced this with my own daughter's adoption program, this should be required reading for all who work in this field.

This is a through researched exploration of the Evangelical adoption movement that has taken off in the last eight years. It also exposes a lot of the corruption in the adoption industry in general. Harrowing and necessary reading.

Eye-opening and heart-breaking. I subscribed to many of the fallacies that Joyce uncovers before reading this book. I really see the process differently now, and I think adoption, especially international adoption, needs a major re-do. Seriously important book.

People considering adoption, particularly international adoption need to read this book before making a decision to move forward. It is a painful tale of Christian over-reach and individual glorification in the name of "saving" orphans who often aren't orphans at all.

Excellent book that is extremely well written and meticulously researched. One of the best books on International adoption and the Christian "orphan saving" movement that can often exploit those less powerful. highly recommended for anyone interested in human rights and child trafficking.

This is not for beginners! The book contains great information about creating audio with C BUT the code rarely works since this book was released 6+ years ago. I wish there was an updated version or at least errdata page and the header files doesn't work(portf.h)I don't think I can continue with this book as NOTHING works.

First and foremost this, book is a great resource for understanding how to program audio. It is area is the severely lacking in the computing world, so every little bit helps.But there are some issues.1. If you get the Kindle version you don't get the accompanying DVD data. However, if you contact MIT Press, like I did, they are pretty good at getting you a copy of the disc for free. And you must get the DVD, there is a lot of great information on it.2. The book does start out on the right foot with an introduction to C. I think this is important because I think the bulk of people interested in this book are probably Digital Audio Production guys who are Power Users but might not have done real programming. But even if you are coming from an experienced C programmer angel I don't think it hurts. However, I believe it is important that the book starts off giving an introduction to C because it sets the tone for the book, and where the book should stand out. There are no GOOD intro to audio programming books. Most books for the audio programming are usually geared toward advanced programming or signal processing, or are so watered down the as you give a non-audio interested programer the basis to get a job done. This is a problem, because sure you can fine plenty of intro to programming books that are happy to teach you some graphics programming along the way, but never for audio. It is ambitious this book tries to take this route.3. Unfortunately, the code style doesn't skill to that newbie-to-digital-audio style.First, this is an edited anthology book and it seems that every author for every section decided to do their own coding style for each section. And not just for the code itself, but also for compiling the code [the book switches from MAKE to Scons and back and never explains why]. The problem is, as should as you understand the code from one section, you end up having to relearn everything for the next because the next author has changed the code style. I don't understand why the authors didn't try to correct for this. Plus the authors don't stick to proper code conventions. A good example of each of these problem is the change between chapter 5 to 6. The code from C to C++ without any reason, but what makes it extra annoying, is that that C++ in improperly formatted ( Example: All the headers for all the classes are in 1 file. ) It is hard to tell, if it was supposed to be poorly written C code in C++ files, or a C++ program poorly organized and written to act like C without making use of classes.Second, the code style itself, doesn't stick to simple easy to read conventions. The authors get into a bad habit of using more advanced C/C++ tricks to write less code [highly abbreviated variable names, Ternary operations instead of true If/Else code blocks]. Sure it is good for them, bad for the learner when you are trying to learn everything step-by-step [ And for you 'advance programmers' who scoff at reading someone complaining about those things, remember you were a newbie once too] You should NEVER write optimized code in any form when you are trying to teach something! That is irresponsible, and disrespectful toward your students who are trying to learn.Third the end goals seem to change, as they are teaching you. You first learn how to generate a simple realtime sound with PortAudio [the ultimate goal], but then everything become about generating a wave file for output and the reader is left pondering how to generated more then one sound at a time and keep it going. When they do get to how to make a realtime plug-in, you aren't taught how to create a simple synthesizer, you just end up making a delay line. Sure a delay line is important, but it doesn't teach me, how I need to manage MIDI and generate sound continuously...Anyway, if you can deal with those 3 things then you will get a lot out of this book and don't get me wrong there in this book.However, this book really needed a few more revisions to be everything it could be. Maybe someday that will happen.

Not so much a book as it is a collection of chapters that relate to the subject of programming audio applications. There isn't really a clear direction and subjects tend to change drastically from chapter to chapter. Still, it is full of really cool algorithms and contains lots of information (with great graphics) to get you started in audio DSP. My only real complaint is the example code uses horrible style and is devoid of comments.An example where multiple variables are declared using vague names:double r, rsq, rr, costh, scal;Or sometimes they use comments but the variable names are meaningless.:a = exp(-k/T); //calc the constant ratio value

I've just reviewed Designing Audio Objects for Max/MSP and Pd and referenced this book so it's only fair I review this as well. This book is not very beginner friendly despite the learning C chapters in the beginning. If anything it's more of a refresher on C. So, that being said I highly recommend this book as a pure beginner intro C Primer Plus (5th Edition) to C very big but thorough. This book is such an essential part of my library now and such a valuable resource in the world of DSP and what goes on in the engine of your favorite DSP environments. If you are interested in how Csound or Max works under the hood or just want to start trying to contribute to open source projects yourself this is such a great place to start! My appreciation goes to all of the authors involved in this project!

As a seasoned coder new to audio processing I give this book 5 big stars. It explains through numerous coding examples and projects all of the major aspects of coding for audio. It also provides cross-platform libraries you will find essential, as well as extra chapters not included in the book via the included DVD. I was able to synthesize my own sound waves, and even write my own wav file player within a week.That said I would not recommended this book to someone who is unfamiliar with coding. The authors do try to give an introduction to c programming, however I found that the examples in this book would be very difficult for a new programmer to be able to follow, let alone compile, given that there are many libraries which must be linked etc. Personally though, I loved that upon opening the book for the first time I could flip through the pages gingerly and see tons and tons of straight c code. The theory is there, but more importantly so is it's practical application, and that's what makes this book awesome.

This may be the only book you'll need on audio programming. It has a C primer in Chp 1, then it goes into each of the cornerstones of audio programming... faders, effects, FFT,... everything! This is one hefty book. It should keep you busy for a long time. The enclosed DVD is also very thorough. Just get this book before you buy anything else.

I am confused with the ending. Jackson promises Maggie he will always protect her. Maggie rejects his attempt at a second chance and tells him not to make promises he can't keep. Translation: she doesn't trust him to protect her. She determines he hasn't come to terms with their past since she's the end all be all in this determination. Then he doesn't talk to her for a week and she whines and pouts. Then we jump to the end where she is thinking about how she's so madly in love with him and all that. She even realizes she probably judged him too harshly in saying he never got over the past when she realizes he probably has. Probably? She's still not sure? Then without talking about her rejection and lack of trust in him, they jump to his proposal and her acceptance. Say what? I feel I missed a chapter somewhere. Where do we go from her rejecting his offer of a second chance to all of a sudden a marriage proposal with no discussion about why she rejected his offer? I loved Hannah and Alex. Gage and whatshername were so-so. This one was worse. I'm thinking that I'm not sure I want to read the 4th book. The quality of both the couple's love and the effort into the endings when they get their HEA seem to be dropping with each book.

Many plot are woven into this third book,of Cold Harbor series. A murder of a student who took a class from Maggie, is that the connection of why the killer is after her. Learning about hacking into computers, and how they can get controlled of a car, was something scary. As the Blackwell Tacktical come to protect her, they are trying to uncover the why, the answer isn’t coming. Yet, the killer is determined. Amidst the twist, is the side of grief, that Maggie and Jackson share, from five years before, a little too much, of going over and over it, I thought. This is another page turner, and will definitely kept readers reading, and looking for more in the series.

Jackson and Maggie were engaged six years earlier when the tragic accident happened. They haven’t seen each other since. Now, Maggie’s life is in danger and Jackson’s tactical team is hired to find a killer and to protect her. Can they work together on the case without agonizing over their loss? This is a great story of forgiving ourselves and to stop blaming God for our losses. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series and look forward to the fourth book!

I just started reading books by Susan Sleeman . She has become one of my favorite authors.The 3rd. book in the Cold Harbor series is a wonderful read.If you like suspense, mystery , intrigue and love put together with Christian values you won’t be disappointed.I won’t go into detail about the characters because I don’t want to give anything away.I already have book 4 waiting !

Another good book in the Cold Harbor series. Plenty of suspense and surprise as the characters find themselves facing murderers and gun dealers. Enjoyed reading about the Blackwell group working as a team moreso than in the last book. The romance was somewhat bittersweet, but ended on a positive, happy note.

Though family interruption I tried reading this book every chance I got. Ms Sleeman always have intriguing storylines. You have it all rolled into one book. I love the characters that grow from one book to the next. I can't wait to read the next book. It you haven't read any of her other books, give them a try.

I liked the heroine as a anthropologist and the hero as ex-military. Liked the multiple storylines with different victims and liked the hero and heroines' history. Loved the team members and references to God

Another suspenseful story with strong characters and strong storyline. It is filled with suspense throughout and mystery, intrigue, and faith. Forgiveness of oneself and trusting God to help with getting through the ruff times and moving on.

I can't tell you enough how much we love this book. When it's time for bed and I'm talking to my 2 year old about our bedtime routine he gets really excited about "choo choo" book. This book helps ease the transition to bedtime.It has wonderful pictures that we all enjoy (myself and my 11 year old daughter as well). When you look closely at the pictures there's so many fun little things added in. Like the squirrel eating out of the fridge in a tree, the mermaid putting on night cream, the sheep taking wool of another sheep to knit a blanket. It took me a few weeks or reading it nightly to really pay attention to what's in the pictures. Now we have fun pointing out the goofy things. The words are catchy and fun to read. The story is a sing songy rhyme that flows easily and is very catchy. It's not too short nor too long. Definitely a keeper. This will be a great go-to birthday gift for 1-3 year olds.

Great bedtime book for my train crazy autistic 5 year old! Very cute, high quality and well written/illustrated.

This story is beautiful, word and picture alike. I got it for my three year old for his birthday because we love to read stories before he takes a nap or goes to bed for the night. The more I read this, the more impressed I was with the detailed art, and the gentle rhythm of the story. Even I was yawning by the end. My three year old little guy really enjoyed all of the detailed art, asking question after question about what everyone is doing, where the teddy bear ended up, why the skunk and the mechanic keep getting back at each other, etc. One of my favorites to read, and he seems to enjoy having it in his rotation as well.

My kids love this book. I bought it because my son is really into trains, and they both love bedtime stories. Perfect combo! This shows the train’s passengers and others doing their bedtime routines as the train starts going, and in the middle of the book, they are going super fast and the passengers are having fun, but then they start getting sleepy and the train slows down, and by the end of the book, the passengers are asleep, the conductor is yawning, and the train creeps along into the tunnel for the night. Great story. Makes me tired too. :)

My 20 month old is pretty picky about books. We have read this one so many times in the past two days since we ordered it; it is now his favorite book, and we own A LOT of books. Once he insisted that we read this one 9 times in a sitting, every time we finished it, he would insist "Train book again!" I highly recommend this one.

About the Author

Bill Warner holds a PhD in physics and math, NC State University, 1968. He has been a university professor, businessman, and applied physicist. He was a Member of the Technical Staff in solid-state physics at the Sarnoff Princeton Laboratories in the area of integrated circuit structures. The day after 9/11 he decided to make the source texts of Islam available for the average person. Dr. Warner's training in scientific theory and mathematics shaped how he analyzed Islamic doctrine. The first step was realizing that the Islamic texts had been made deliberately difficult to read and comprehend. A program, the Trilogy Project (see below), was created to strip away the confusion in the texts. It became clear that Islam is not constructed on the same civilizational principles as the rest of the world. Author Bill Warner takes us through the life of the Prophet Mohammed in the words of the Holy books of Islam. I had only the most vague notion of any of the Islamic works besides the Koran. Warner's three versions of the Qur'an (_A Two-Hour Koran_, _An Abridged Koran_, and _A Simple Koran_) all seek to bring the chronology of the "Sira" to the Qur'an itself, a collection of Mohammed's pronouncements traditionally arranged purely by the length of the text.Warner's unique thesis, expressed in a final chapter of comments, is that Islam is primarily a political ideology rather than a religion. Warner supports this thesis by making a contrast between the few converts to Mohammed's peaceful preaching in Mecca and the coercive conversion of all of Arabia in the decade after Mohammed's turn to military tactics. Warner also underscores a repeated motif from Mohammed's life, the development of a dualistic ethical system, one requiring rectitude toward fellow Muslims but allowing many forms of deceit and violence toward non-Muslim "infidels".Compared to many critics of Islamic terrorism, Warner is restrained in his comments. Nonetheless, Warner's use of original Islamic sources raises troubling questions that cannot be brushed aside. Rather than speculating about the connection between present-day terrorists and the religion that they proclaim, this book shows the connection between religious violence and the words and deeds of the Prophet Mohammed himself.

I gave book a 5 as I liked the variety and plan on incorporating other recipes in her books to make my favorites for vegetarian and vegan recipes. I am trying to be more flexible and not use as much meat and chicken.. The flavors of dishes should be able to substitute recipes where meat or chicken primary recipe to vegan or vegetarian additives . Author added few changes from other 500 recipes so this made it more interesting..
