Very good job with the content and organization!The book is well-organized with many helpful examples. I think Doug does a good job grabbing people in the Foreword. If they don't want to continue reading after that, they probably aren't good candidates for this publication.The first one-third of the book was a review for me, since I attended Greg's class. It was still worthwhile because it establishes the key concepts that anyone playing these games -- seriously or even casually -- should understand and adopt. They are then emphasized throughout the remember of the book.The last two-thirds of the book discusses and illustrates some very helpful additions to the class material; such as, the sections on bet sizing and high/low variance. Both of these concepts appear in almost every section after they are introduced, and the examples explain very well how and when to productively vary your bet-sizing and effectively use high and low variance. This is excellent and should make a tremendous difference between the win rates of someone using these ideas and those who do not.Also, the comments on betting/not betting throughout based on your cards, opponent tendencies, and stack sizes are quite useful. Situations in which we should NOT be betting (even with the likelihood of having the best hand of the moment) will save the reader many chips in the long run.Throughout the book, fully explained examples are used to illustrate the points being made. The examples at the end of the book provide the reader with material that (IMO) should be periodically reviewed in order to stay sharp.If you decide to issue a new volume, there are a couple of additions you might consider. As Doug mentions, he had never played any form of PLO, and (IMO) it's important for the reader to understand that pot limit is a (much) bigger game than no limit. That is not intuitively obvious, since how can anything be bigger than no-limit, a game in which you can put all your chips into the pot whenever it's your turn to bet! So if you ever update the book, I think it should be stated that pot limit is a bigger game, the reason why it is true (players bet pot and repot much more often than they shove all-in in NL), and show how the pot builds very quickly, even in a 1-2 pot limit game. Since some readers will know that, I suggest it be shown in an appendix rather than the body of the text (so not to bore those who already know it). An early footnote reference to the appendix should (again IMO) satisfy everyone. If you ever update this book (or write a second one), you might consider adding a section on tournaments to discuss situations in which the strategy might differ from that used in cash games. Bet sizing will vary in a tourney, since players have large stacks early and much less playability late. When short-stacked in a NLHE tournament the player reaches a shove or fold mode. In a comparable PLO8 or BigO situation the player will, of course, pot premium hands when short; but which other hand types should be added to this group and are there some that are not recommended (e.g., when short-stacked in a NLHE tournament, high cards become much more important than low or medium suited connectors)? Also, before reaching that stage, at what point (in terms of stack size) should the player modify her strategy. Are there certain hand types that should be avoided at that point, and are there others that become more important?

I am extremely grateful that the author along with many other people took the time to compose some truly great work here. The universe put this book in my lap at just the right time. Outstanding book Greg! Thanks for the great insight into a game a truly love!

Greg Vail does an outstanding job explaining the key concepts of PLO8 & Big O with concise hand flows and breakdown of the thought process of a professional player. I found the book very enlightening and helpful.

This book is terrific for anyone transitioning to high-low poker games. The author expands on all the important concepts that you need to be successful. Examples for both 4-card and 5-card games are included.This book turned my game around and taught me the proper way to think about high-low poker.

Not to be cliche but this book is a literal game changer. If you want to actually get better and not lose money then this book will help. I bought two copies and I would pay double the price. Reading from start to finish and you will figure out what have you been doing wrong by the middle of the book. By the end of this book you should be proficient at the basic winning concepts.

My experience with Scoop! by Greg Vail is amazing; which means going from a net-looser to up-and-coming-winner in 5 card and 4-card hi-lo games at the low to medium stakes level with only a modest amount of work. The author's knowledge of these games is master-class and does an exceptional job conveying core concepts, required skills, and a global though process for poker overall. Not only has this material greatly improved my overall Big-O/PLO8 skillset but its given me new pathways to think about and improve my regular PLO and Holdem Game. Each concept is explained using detailed hand examples that are informative and will help you understand the intricacies of the specific concept. This is not necessarily a book for beginners and you will need to have a fundamental understanding of the game before you begin. That being said, it's a great book if you already know the basics of Omaha/Big O. It will take your game to a new level fairly quickly if you're willing to read and implement the information at the table. I highly recommend this book.

Although it is pure history, it's so beautifully written, so lyrical it reads like a novel. Rarely has any book about this remarkable family given me that sense of destiny, the full of the of their influence as well as the romance of England's premier ruling family. That to a large extent the Plantagenets defined England -- perhaps even created it was a unique idea for me. That their more than 200 year reign, at its peak and its depths still to a large degree defined British identity was something I'd never considered.It was wonderful to read history where the author appreciates not just the facts, but the drama, the romance, the story and the myth was a delight. The imprint left by this ruling family on Great Britain is deep, pervasive and affects every aspect of England's identity, even into the 21st century long after the family has -- technically -- disappeared. On many levels, this family can never disappear. They are part of the soil, the air, the heart of the island kingdom they ruled.From its opening words, the book grabbed me and pulled me in. It "had" me before I had finished the preface, much less the first chapter.Although I was predisposed to enjoy it, I had no idea how much I would enjoy it. This is a book that greatly and delightfully exceeded my expectations. I have read many books about the Plantagenets, both straight history and as literary "docudrama." I am very familiar with the stories of each of the monarchs, the wars, the disputes and so on. It could have been old news for me, but instead, it was like reading it for the first time. What a wonderful fresh voice the author brings to material that has been written about -- one might think -- to the point where you could reasonably question whether or not yet another tome on the subject serves any purpose.Was anything new uncovered? Not really new information, but a new way of looking at existing knowledge I had read in many other forms. Pity this book was completed before the remains of Richard III were found ... I wonder if that discovery might have altered the author's perception of this most controversial and last of the Plantagenet kings? I have often felt Richard to be unfairly maligned, but give what we know, we are each entitled to put whatever interpretation seems reasonable as an overlay to the same information.As you might expect, the book includes maps, lineage charts, all the family connections of the Plantagenets. The story covers that period from Empress Mathilda through Richard III. It stops before the ascent of the Tudors. That, as the author points out, is another book. And I want to read that one, too.This is a long book. I had no trouble with its length other than finding enough time to read the whole thing. It wasn't hard to become engrossed in each of its sections. It doesn't require any particular prior knowledge of the period, although prior knowledge would certainly not hurt any. In any case, you can hardly grow up an English-speaker and not have heard of so many of the characters that strut, gallop or crawl across the pages.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is wonderful, whether or not you are a scholar, history buff, Anglophone or Anglophile, lover of historical novels ... or innocently searching for a great read.It's available in hard cover, paperback, Kindle and audio format. I don't believe you could go wrong no matter what version you choose.

Like many other people who are thinking about getting this book, I am reading it for a history class. I would agree with many that it is a compelling read and very interesting, but it can get kind of confusing and boring if you don't know anything about this time period of these people. I'm am writing a paper on this, and I've found that by rereading the preface, I was able to piece everything together again. If you start to feel bogged down in the countless details, then reread the summary of the books parts in the preface. This will help even if you're reading it for fun, because it reminds you of what's important and why. I would definitely recommend this book, I didn't value English history much before I read this, and now I hope to read more about this time period and the ones preceding and succeeding it if I get the chance!

Growing up in Southern California during the late 50s and early 60s in a middle-class WASP environment, I, an avid reader born of two avid readers, was almost predestined to be exposed to stories of King Arthur, Robin Hood, and King Richard the Lionheart. Plus, going to a Catholic grade school, we learned of King Henry VIII, who treated several of his wives most shamefully and tore his realm from the bosom of Mother Church. Thus, by 1975, I was primed for my first visit to England. Upon my return, I stumbled upon the magnificent 4-volume set on the Plantagenet kings by Thomas Costain (THE CONQUERING FAMILY, THE MAGNIFICENT CENTURY, THE THREE EDWARDS, THE LAST PLANTAGENETS). That’s like mislabeling a photo of London’s Westminster Cathedral (Roman Catholic) as St. Paul’s Cathedral (Anglican). The two are very different in appearance and identity. (I trust one also knows the difference between Westminster CATHEDRAL and Westminster ABBEY.)The startling error in the photo section aside, if you can’t find Costain’s books, then that by Jones is a splendid narrative on the subject. Honor is due Dan for the effort and research it took to write it.

Sorry, I tried, but there's only so much nonsense I can read. I somehow (barely) made it past the part where they 'discovered' a galaxy on the far side of the universe by examining an asteroid (in our Solar system), which is impossible in so many different ways I can't even count them. And don't get me started about the translator box that becomes fluent in an alien language after just a few sentences. The list goes on. Hint to future authors, if you slept through High School Science class, don't try to write an SF book. The only thing these guys have to offer is an occasional funny quip, so I gave 2 stars instead of one, but they really need to find a different genre to write in. Skip this, don't waste your time.

Ok I got a great deal on the 1st 3 Gateway books in a box set by Johnson Yantez. Man I was salivating for the next books. It has been a while since I read all these so I’m not too cool on the details. I will have to reread them all.

What is better than: - ancient technology that opens a star gate - a trip through space to an unknown destination - US Marines in space - than battle between light and darkness with a biblical flavor - finding a alien soulmate?I can’t wait to read the rest of the saga!

An okay read but the events in the story just kept getting less and less credible. Characters tend towards caricatures, no real world building or technological consistency. Need a plot twist - introduce some new, previously un-hinted-at tech out of the clue!

How many parallels can I name? You can pick out the story/ movie/ book. The Will - The Force. Frank and crew - The Guardians of the Galaxy. The Lord of Chaos - Sith Lord. More from Flash Gordon, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, any story with a hero against impossible odds. Since I really like those stories, I really liked this story.

It's a fun retelling of Star Wars, and the Green Lantern, wrapped in USMC Oohrah. A fantasy kick to read and I look forward to more!

This may be the first three books in this series.Hope that the following books in series, stay as well written.

Still reading it, but it has been an easy read. Kind of a cross between the Green Lantern and the Stargate universe. Probably more of a young adults read. Not really a hard science read. Fortunately, I enjoy both styles.

But at an engagement bash for one of her multiple stepdaughters, she finds herself questioning everything about her life: "How on earth did I get like this? How? How did I ever become this person who's not really me?" She spends the rest of the novel attempting to answer these questions--and trying to resurrect her older, extinguished self. Should she take up the research she began back in college on Robert E. Lee's motivation for joining the Confederacy? More to the point, should she take up with her college sweetheart, who's now divorced and living within easy striking range? None of these quick fixes pans out exactly as Rebecca imagines. What she emerges with is a kind of radiant resignation, best expressed by 100-year-old Poppy on his birthday: "There is no true life. Your true life is the one you end up with, whatever it may be." A tautology, perhaps, but Tyler's delicate, densely populated novel makes it stick. Yes, Poppy. There are also characters named NoNo, Biddy, and Min Foo--the sort of saccharine roll call that might send many a reader scampering in the opposite direction. In the midst of her busy life as mother, grandmother and proprietor of the family business, the Open Arms (she hosts parties in the family's old Baltimore row house), Rebecca attempts to pick up the life she was leading before she married, back when she felt grownup. She visits her hometown in Virginia, locates the boyfriend she jilted and renews her intellectual interests. But as Rebecca ponders the life-that-might-have-been, the reader learns about the life-that-was. At 20, she left college and abandoned her high school sweetheart to marry a man who already had a large family to support. A year later, she had a baby of her own; five years later, her husband died in an auto accident, and she was left to raise four daughters, tend to her aging uncle-in-law and support them all. And a difficult lot they are, seldom crediting Rebecca for holding her rangy family together. Yet like all of Tyler's characters, they are charming in their dysfunction. And much as one feels for Rebecca, much as one wants her to find love, it's difficult to imagine her leaving or upsetting the family order. Tyler (The Accidental Tourist; Breathing Lessons) has a gift for creating endearing characters, but readers should find Rebecca particularly appealing, for despite the blows she takes, she bravely keeps on trying. Tyler also has a gift genius is more like it for unfurling intricate stories effortlessly, as if by whimsy or accident. The ease of her storytelling here is breathtaking, but almost unnoticeable because, rather like Rebecca, Tyler never calls attention to what she does. Late in the novel, Rebecca observes that her younger self had wanted to believe "that there were grander motivations in history than mere family and friends, mere domestic happenstance." I read several other reviews listed here. Perhaps you have to be 53 or older to understand Rebecca's dilemma. Because I am her age, I totally got it. And I found her reunion with her almost-fiance to be a meaningful insight into her character. Tyler uses it to demonstrate how far Rebecca has come in her journey to self-hood, if there's such a term. Her family, like most families, has its share of oddballs and outliers. The foibles of the lot make them real and believable characters. There is an arc to the story, but it is subtle. It takes a little work to identify just exactly when Rebecca begins to settle into herself, and that's just fine with this reader. This story is deliberately told, skillfully interrogating the characters and how each has developed over his/her life. I was taken with Tyler's description of Zeb, and his relationship with Rebecca. Similarly, Patch and Troy; NoNo, Biddy and Min Foo. In our family, each of us has a nickname, so Tyler's use of them for her characters made them believable and accessible. Unlike most of Tyler's fans -- among which I now count myself -- I came to Tyler's writing recently and wish I'd discovered her years earlier.

I kept waiting for this book to go somewhere. I skipped a lot of it, trying to figure out if it was going to get better. It had very little narrative arc. The endless mundane dialogue was tedious. The names of the characters were contrived. It was as if the author was trying too hard to make too many of the names weird and unusual. I found it hard to feel drawn in by the main character. The set up is that she's "discovered" she's become someone other than who she intended to be. But she only dabbles lightly in trying to go back to a former self by meeting up with a past boyfriend. Nothing comes of that and any "epiphany" she might have is muted and lackluster. She ends up back in the same place she's in at the beginning and the reader is left with no particular take-away. The book lacked forward momentum. It had a bogged down feeling the whole way through. Overall a pointless annoying book that I am sorry I wasted any time on.

This is my first Anne Tyler book and I was very disappointed. I kept waiting and waiting for a plot to develop but it never did. The characters were poorly defined. When I read a novel I like to get a mental picture of the characters but these characters just seemed like one big blob with nothing that made them stand out from the rest. I couldn't come to care about any of them. I was so bored I couldn't read this book for more than 15 minutes before I had to move on to something more interesting.

I've bought this book in both hard copy and Kindle. One of my very favorite books ever. Simply love Rebecca...I think every woman who has ever been taken for granted as the under-appreciated family nurturer will see some of themselves in her story. Anne Tyler's language is just beautiful. I laugh each time I read about the poor boy grabbed by the floozy for a dance at the wedding, wearing "the shocked, frozen expression of a hijacking victim." This book thrilled me almost 10 years ago in hard copy, and the Kindle version was even better. Bravo!

I first read 'Back When We Were Grownups' by Anne Tyler about ten years ago - and loved it. Since that time, I have been unerringly attracted to crime fiction. However, I recently executed a brief detour and bought three general fiction novels as well. 'Back When we Were Grownups' - in my opinion, Anne Tyler's best work - is the only one of these that I have re-read, again and again.It's such a warm, generous and welcoming book just like the main character herself - Rebecca. Stepmother/mother to four girls and step-grandmother/grandmother to their offspring, Rebecca takes us through her days as a party-giver, whether celebrating with the clients who hire space in her home, The Open Arms, or as she coaxes and cajoles her family through engagements, weddings, picnics or the 100th birthday party of Poppy, her deceased husband's Uncle, who she inherited along with the house.Now in her early fifties, though widowed decades earlier, Rebecca wonders if maybe she lost herself and became somebody else along the way. She re-acquaints herself with Will Allenby, the man she was set to marry before she suddenly met and married Joe Davitch, founder of The Open Arms. Maybe if she'd married Will Allenby, they would have had a more academic life in 'a comfortably shabby flat in some faculty widow's house just off campus' - her 'real life' is how she starts to think of this dream, as opposed to her 'fake real life, with its tumult of of drop-in relatives and party guests and repairmen'. She finally learns how much each life means to her.Rebecca is a wonderful character - sensitive, observant, cheerful, wistful, kind, funny - but maybe not the greatest dresser! Anne Tyler is a beautiful writer whose details of daily life and the thoughts and feelings they invoke are so accurately expressed, that the story becomes your 'real life', your escape, and very satisfying so, for just a little while.
