Although it contains useful (but commonly known) information, the bullying approach just turned me off.Don't get me wrong, I cuss like a sailor and so does my husband. I worked in L.A. theatre and he was in Vietnam during the war. So foul language is not a problem. It's the arrogant, entitled Gen X approach I just can't stand. Use profanity if you want, but don't insult people with it. Yes, it's expressive;but in this case it's just used for shock value and to humiliate and guilt bait people who obviously want to relive abusive childhood or other relationship experiences. I don't. I'd slap the author if she spoke to me the way she writes.I've been a vegan for forty-seven years. I eat a marginally-decent diet of less than a thousand calories a day. I've had my diet gone over by two nutritionists, seen an Ayeurvedic doctor, had my hormones tests, my thyroid check, and been examined for diabetes. The only "reason" anyone can come up with for this first weight gain of my life (I'm sixty-six) is that I'm "getting older," and that after dancing for over fifty years, I"m orthopedically trashed and, therefore, have become sedentary.But back to the abusive nature of this book and it's popularity. I don't get it. I showed my daughter, who is a psychologist, several pages, and Angie was horrified. Angie cusses, too. But never around patients, especially someone with low self-esteem from something like weight issues. Angie said this book could drive a fragile person to suicide. And I can absolutely see how it could. Would you train a puppy by laughing at its problems and screaming "Bad! Bad! Bad!" all the time? If so, you'd have a terrified, cowering-but-well-behaved dog -- there's one next door to me.Don't pay someone for bullying you. Haven't you had enough of that in your life? I read "Mindless Eating," learned what causes us to eat, and along with all the exercise I can get my body to do, am doing much better. I bought Skinny Bitch at the insistence of a girlfriend from high school. And I'm so sorry I did.

I read this book in three days. I've tried to read a lot of health books before but they were all so boring they were difficult to read... Well not this one! The comical language and references while stating facts makes it a brilliant, interesting read. I'm starting my new "Skinny Bitch" lifestyle tomorrow and I can't wait. These authors are truly inspiring and will keep you laughing at the same time throughout the book. :-)

But the book clearly states (in 2005) why we need carbohydrates for our health. In 2005, we were middle of low-carb diet fad. This book did not follow this ridiculous fad. This book is not for weight (muscle and fat) loss. It is for healthy eating which naturally leads you to healthy body composition WITH exercise. Reading this book gives you good knowledge of healthy eating, but you should update your knowledge reading newer non-fad diet books. I also read the book, "Skinny Bitch: Ultimate Everyday Cookbook", written by one of the authors. The book not only shows great recipes, but also explains why we should choose organic over conventional and what to look for in ingredient labels.

It would have been nice if I had find this book before I became a vegan. " I may have lost a lot of weight the first year" if I have had this book. I have always believed that using negative words, such as "regret" or "problem," should be avoided. But Luntz tells us not only what words or phrases to use but why.This book should be a textbook used in a course offered in any communications curriculum.

I'll agree with the other reviewers. The book doesn't know who their audience. Every chapter read like the readers needed help running their own campaign. And the book is clearly advertising for every day use. The author used marketing tactics on unsuspecting customers. Unless you want this for political reasons, skip this book.

lt's a good book. lt certainly has a few very good points. However, l find its message to be repetitive. l have the feeling you could say in one chapter what the author conveyed in many (yes, he should've stick to some of his own rules: be brief, etc.) :-))lt will raise your awareness on the need to calculate which words to use and how to convey them.Also, l found it reads easily for the most part.

I must confess that I had never heard of Dr. Frank Luntz until I sat through his presentation at a large conference. In a word, he was excellent, even electric, as he roamed through the large audience, speaking without notes, and engaging each person along the way. His message was clear - focus more on the message you need your audience to hear - and how you can be understood, and less on oratorio, lofty rhetoric and messages that can be easily missed or misunderstood.Good message. Luntz is clearly someone who follows his own advice. And, if his subliminal message to the attendees was, "If you are enjoying this, buy my book ...", he clearly succeeded with me - I ordered it during the conference.Here is a bit of criticism. Hearing Luntz talking about identifying the appropriate words that work is more enjoyable than reading about it. But, it's not that his writing style is bad - it's just that he is so strong verbally that I think I held him to a higher standard. Actually, he imbeds humor, questions and "conversations" with the reader that make the pages flow. And, a lot of good old common sense too. Had I not seen him in action, I would not have made this observation.I know there is some question between the difference between words that communicate vs. words that manipulate. There is a definite fine line here, particularly within the political arena, of which much of this book is devoted. Still, one earlier reviewer ascribed this to the more broadly defined "words that persuade," and I think this is fair.Beyond all the stories, case studies and personal experiences involving products and products (the majority of the book), however, there is a primer in communication skill development for the reader. He tells readers which words work within their daily lives, be they needed to avoid a speeding ticket, negotiate with a spouse, or make the big presentation to the boss (followed by a forward looking request for a raise). In other words, I found that Luntz' book was much more than "words that work," it was about helping perceptive readers to become "people that work [more effectively, productively, successfully]."Let me end by asking interested readers how they might approach their next big presentation. After reading this book, they are far more likely to begin with, "Imagine a working environment in which everyone spoke so simply, so clearly, so credibly, so consistently, so aspirationally," that everyone knew what they were supposed to do, and why and when ..."Much more powerful.This book reflects the popular culture. The examples are real and current. It is brain food for people who choose to improve by thinking about and using words that people hear. Highly recommended.

It never fails to amaze me how easily people misread what they're told or what they hear or read. Why? People don't really listen. People are thinking their private thoughts. They are thinking what they'll say next. They're not listening to you. So they're hearing sound bites.The communicator who uses small words and short sentences and the right words will be able to get these folks to take the action they want them to take.If you communicate to convince others, you should read this book. It's not the best written book I've read. It's not the best book on this topic. It's not a great book. And there are errors. Errors in wording and errors in fact.For example, the author says that people do not buy things from long gone decades. They prefer items of today. Well, that's not really true. There is a large market in fountain pens from the twenties, thirties and into the sixties. I know. I collect them. The market for Parker 51 pens from the forties is keen. So I don't buy that statement.But the book is a decent read. It will help anyone who needs words and needs to persuade people.

I've run most of the trails on Mt.Tam and this book is a great way to learn more about the things I see or maybe miss. I would give this book 5 stars but I would love to see an updated version with color photos and maps. This book is a must-have for people who love Mt.Tam.

Lots of information packed into this book. Not flashy, but very thoughtfully put together. It would be hard to find it all from other sources. Some trails have been closed since publication, but basically it's still 98% right.

Mount Tamalpais (Mt. Tam for short) dominates the skyline of the North Bay, across the Golden Gate from San Francisco. Its mountainsides are covered with trails, on the north in the Marin Water District with its string of lakes, and on the south with Muir Woods and the north end of the Marin Headlands. It is an exceptional recreational opportunity for hikers, runners, and bikers. This guide shows the way."Mt Tam" documents the many trails around the mountain, which circle the mountain's girth and go up and down its sides. The guide describes 37 different trails, plus some hikes that combine trails. Each trail entry describes the route and condition, and provides a graphic representation of the route. The appendices offer some additional nice to know facts about the geology, human and natural history of the mountain. This particular edition is a little dated, but the trails seem not to have changed that much over the years. Recommended.

This little book, small enough to put in your daypack for any of the hikes it covers, has 37 maps and trail descriptions for the Mt. Tam area. I discovered delightful areas I hadn't explored previously. Maps are interesting "3D" shaded relief maps with the trails superimposed. There are descriptions of notable flora and fauna, including peak viewing months. Good info on elevation changes, ratings for hiking vs. running, and % of shade on each trail. I'm going to give this 5 stars, not because it is perfect, but because it's good for someone who just wants some words, phrases, sentences that they can use around family members. It's a good supplementary book for someone who is a beginner in arabic.I actually recommend this book as a starter to the book The 101 Most Used Verbs in Spoken Arabic: Jordan & Palestine (Third Edition), and you can also use Levantine Colloquial Arabic Vocabulary to fully build your vocabulary (that book is Lebanese vocab but it's similar enough to Jordanian).

Good book very interesting! I used to live in Syria and traveled to Jordan occasionally, I liked the content of this book

This volume goes a long way in bringing Jung's work in to a philosophical and psychological context that is useful to practitioners in the field and scholars. By introducing the lens phenomenological inquiry Brooke is able to take Jung's often mystical and work and bring its insights back to the world. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of Jung, but this volume helps address some of the difficulties that arise from attempting to apply his work.

I had the good fortune of studying under the author and the author of the foreword. Brooke clearly shows the common ground between the qualitative methodology of existential phenomenology and Jung's methodology, both giving primacy to lived experience over allegiance to conceptual formulations. In exploring this common ground, Brooke gives an invaluable means for refining and continuing Jung's work, honoring the psyche.

Avoid this 2009 edition. It has numerous typographical errors, to the point of being almost unintelligible at times. The original 1991 edition has been updated but me, the author, and republished by Routledge as a Classic Edition in 2015. Please purchase that copy. It is also less than half the price that I see asked for a used copy of this awful edition. I would like to give the Routledge edition 5 stars. :) Roger Brooke, Ph.D., author.
