"Dakota Dusk" by Lauraine Snelling, is another good book by a wonderful author.I enjoyed this novel very much. I suppose the theme is much like other “prairie novelsâ€, as I call them, but Ms. Snelling always spins yarns about very interesting people. She has brought her characters to life in this novel as well.The main characters, Jude Weinlander and Rebekka Stenesrude are very believable persons from that era of history. Jude was a rounder and drunkard until a tragedy forced him to see himself as the person he was and changed him to a good man, although his past memories keep him from any personal relationships.Rebekka is a school teacher in Willowford, Dakota territory. In this time of history, school teachers boarded with their students’ families, taking turns with each family. In this case the older son of the family Rebekka is staying with at the time tries to assault her. She flees to Mrs. Sampson’s boarding house seeking help. Mrs. Sampson takes her in and the story continues.The novel by Ms. Snelling takes a few twists but her writing is interesting without being mushy and provocative. Lauraine Snelling is one of my favorite authors. The Dakota series continues with the theme of the Norwegian community in North Dakota, but is set later. The character development is excellent, and following them through the four books was a joy. The theme of how central faith was to those of the late 19th and early 20th centuries is well developed. Wholesome and edifying, this series, like the Red River books, has far more substance than many of the Amish books available today. I recommend the series. A good value, and books I will read again in a few years.
Well written and I like that each book can be read individually without missing too much.Despite what some have written wondering about Jude & his 1st wife - I feel it was explained very well in the previous book. I understood very clearly that he was not a very nice man and treated his wife so badly that no matter what - she feel belittled and unloved.And I look forward to reading the next book.
What I say about most Lauraine Snelling books. Great!With few exceptions (and there ARE a few) I enjoy her books more than I can express.She doesn't major on the romance - but we get very engrossed in the story. The work ethicof the people she writes about, and the goodness of her characters (who are mostly Norwegian)is great ..... and make me wish I could know these folks. They work, they love, and they lenda hand to their neighbors. When I finish most LS books, I feel really refreshed - and want to readthem again and again. Terrific story.
I had read the series several years ago, and was so excited to see it as an ebook. I have the entire series now, and will read it over and over again. The characters are based on fact, the story is so true, and what they go through is astounding. Being the first to immigrate north of Grand Forks, ND, they encountered so many wonderful things-some good some bad-but realistic. The faith based dialogue and values make it a fantastic book for teens and adults. Their faith in God is what pulled them through. A PERSON HAS TO READ IT TO APPRECIATE IT.
this is a follow up in Jude's live. love to drink, gamble and a lazy life. Envy an jealousy rule his life. Careless one day, he lost what little he had. he left full of regret and turn his back because he was not worthy of a brother and family and friends. In the land far away he learn that God has plans for him, and even thru troubles He can raising him up and make all things new. The devil reminds him of his past, but at the end he reminds the devil of the future he has now.
There was a good message about forgiveness but there were too many things left hanging or not explained. The part about Adolph and Rebekkah felt contrived so there would be some suspense. There was really no resolution; it just ended. The relationship between Jude and his first wife was not explained well.I couldn't connect with the characters at all. They were flat with too little background. I won't be reading the rest of the series.
As with all of Lauraine Snellings books I enjoyed this series very much - I am slowly but surely winding my way thru all of her stories and then lending them to my daughter. Both of us have enjoyed her style of writing and story telling very much. She has joined my group of author's that I "look for and seek their books to read." Thanks Lauraine for many hours of good enjoyable stories.
