I picked up THE ABRACADABRA KID: A WRITER'S LIFE based on the reviews I read here. It was well-worth the few dollars I spent for the hardbound edition.The life of Sid Fleischman is told in an unpretentious and humorous style, I imagine just like his novels for kids, which, I have to shamefully admit, I've never read. He tells us about his growing up poor in Brooklyn and San Diego during the Great Depression, his love of magic, his service in the U. S. Navy during WWII, becoming a cub-journalist for a local newspaper after the war, writing screenplays, and trying to be an honest-to-goodness author of children's books. There are also many photos of his parents and two sisters, himself, his own family, as well as handbills he printed in High School Printing Shop class announcing the "See'n is Believ'n" magic shows he and a friend, Bud Ryan, performed for the public (in an effort to make some money during the lean years). They called themselves "The Ryan Brothers".Sid divides his book into 43 short chapters beginning each with a humorous excerpt from one of the many letters he has received from fans...all of them from kids. For example: "Please don't come back to my school. I hate to write letters." (p.45); "When did you start writing? When are you going to stop?" (p.98); "I'd like to be a writer, but my hand gets tired. Can you give me some advice?" (p.174). Fortunately, Sid does end his book with practical advice to anyone, child or adult, who wants to write.While the book is a stroll down memory lane, it is a trip only those who lived through the Depression and Second World War will remember taking. If you happen to be, like me, a "Baby Boomer" and nostalgic about growing up in the 50s and 60s, I recommend THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE THUNDERBOLT KID by Bill Bryson and KNOTS IN MY YO-YO STRING by Jerry Spinelli. If you want to learn the craft of writing, read THE ABRACADABRA KID.

My children go to a school where the "AR Points" they earn from reading dictate their ability to enjoy basic school time activities. Unfortunately, they're not able to acquire very many interesting books that have multiple "AR Points", so they're rarely able to amass the necessary levels of points to continually remain in the good graces of the school. However, I proactively dug around and found a tool that lets me find books that are AR compatible and the points they give. This book is on that list and it came highly recommended by a friend who reads nearly anything he can get his hands on. I ordered two books, so each will get the same review, but they both did a fantastic job because they were highly entertaining, taught a few things, and provided the needed points. Thank you!

First, let me say this: The Abracadabra Kid is not just for magicians. Although Fleischman—a Newbery Medal-winning author of children's books, screenplays, novels, instructional magic books, and a kid's bio on Harry Houdini—goes into some detail about his early days as a travelling magician, he writes about his earliest published work, his service in the United States Navy on a destroyer escort during World War II, and the origin of his career as a writer. Throughout the book, a relatively quick read because of its humorous, conversational tone, Fleischman plants little gold coins that reveal where he got many of the ideas for some of his bestselling stories—ideas that formed long before he was a professional writer. And he tops it off with valuable advice and tips for aspiring writers. Whether you're young or old, magician or non-magician, writer or reader, you'll enjoy this autobiography by a man whose life and work have entertained and inspired both children and adults for more than 70 years.

I'm an instructor with the Institute of Children's Literature so I sought out this book when I heard that the Newbery award winning writer Sid Fleishman recently passed away. Another children's writer recommended it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and have quoted some of his novel writing advice to my students. The Abracadabra Kid is entertaining -- well written of course, filled with photos of his life of magic, his family, serving in the Navy, writing, movie scripts and speaking. It's especially interesting to me since much of it is set in San Diego where we live. I wished I had heard him speak in person but reading Abracadabra Kid may have been even better -- like a personal conversation with him.

Fun autobiography with useful information for authors such as “It's the job of the hero or heroine to solve the story problem” and “The main character should be changed by the events of the story.”

Mr. Fleischman, long recognized and awarded as a childrens' author (as well as a successful writer for a variety of audiences and media) tells his own story as fascinating as any story he created from his imagination. Fleishman's true to life biography rings with his conversational style like talking with that creative neighbor over the backyard fence. The author at times seems almost amazed that somehow the writing ideas kept coming and even paid the bills for his growing family. Enjoy the life of a gifted storyteller as he shares the factors and influences that shaped him and brought him deserved fame and made his stories memorable to generations of readers.

Great autobiography of a fascinating man and writer. Recommended for kids, especially if they're interested in magic or writing.

Great book for studying the Bible and a wonderful text book. I disagree with the thought that the Holy Spirit cannot help you interpret scripture, that is found in this book. It says without everything and the way you do their methods of study, then you cannot interpret the Bible correctly. If the Holy Spirit helped them write it, can’t he help us read it?

There is a lot of good stuff here, but my primary gripe is that they deny an important hermeneutical distinction made by Luther, Calvin, and every Reformation Christian that followed in their wake for hundreds of years. What they deny is the proper distinction between Law and Gospel. They also deny that the Law can be divided into ceremonial, civil, and moral categories. This distinction was also held to by all of the Reformers. By denying these crucial distinctions, they are redifining how Protestant Christians read their Bible. The inevitable result will be substantive departures from historic, Reformation Christianity. I think that's dangerous. Where are they, and those following them, going to end up? They're essentially rethinking the Christian faith.The authors are writing from a premillinial-dispensationalist-baptist perspective, so they encourage readers to take the apocalyptic literature of Revelation literally, as much as is absolutely possible. That's interesting, when the authors take all references to baptism and the Lord's supper in the scriptures to be figurative, even when the context is historical narrative (i.e. this is my body, baptism now saves you, etc.).As a general rule, it is a good historical, literary approach to understanding the scriptures. If you are a more traditional Reformed Baptist who holds to Covenental Theology, or if you are more Classically Reformed or Lutheran, then there will be much that you find in this book that is at direct odds with your tradition and your confessional standards. If you are a "New Calvinist" baptist, and a premillenial-dispensationalist, then you'll probably be in essential agreement with the authors, as that is the perspective they are writing from.

The book itself is excellent. If you are purchasing the kindle version in order to listen to the text-to-speech option, be warned that it can be hard to follow. In my opinion, the pausing is messed up. It pauses longer at commas than periods, which is the opposite of how it should be. This makes comprehending the text difficult. Also, reading out the long lists of references is tedious and the reading of the Bible abbreviations can be confusing.

Had to get this for a class and I'm so glad I got it. It has really helped me to be able to read and understand the Bible. I've been in church since I was 3 years old and grew up in it. But was always intimidated to read and study the word of God because I felt I couldn't fully understand it. Now I'm loving studying the Bible any chance I get. I brag about this book all the time to my friends. A must read. It's also helped with the Bible studies we give. Great material and written perfectly for anyone to understand.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. This was one of the required textbooks for a seminary and I found it to be very engaging to read. The book is written so well and really gives the reader some practical strategies in how to read the Bible and how to accurately interpret what you read. It is a great resource for anyone waning to dig deeper and get the most out of your Bible study, This is a book that I will indeed hang onto and use as a resource in the future.

If you have an interest in learning more about God's Word, I believe you'd find tis book helpful. It is broken into concise chapters that aid in understanding how to get the most out of relating the Word as it was written in Biblical times to today's world, using a 5 step process that makes sense. Using this book will help you get more from the Bible, and if you apply what you learn, help to build a closer relationship with Him.

This book was required reading in seminary. I loved this book! I learned what it's means that exegesis is an act of love. I also learned how to apply the Biblical teaching that Scripture never contradicts itself. Don't look at verses outside of context, and don't assume that one verse confirms your understanding. Look at various verses, consider the historical circumstances, and the literary type. When I completed my class at seminary, I sold the book but later regretted not having it and bought another copy to use in my personal Bible study.

Awesome workbook to an awesome book. This isn't really necessary, but it's very helpful for a classroom/discipling environment. The book is great at teaching how to study the bible and equips the students to learn by practicing. The workbook contains all the same exercises as the book, but it's just more convenient than to print out materials or xerox a bunch of pages.

I have to read it and reread it. It has so much information concerning the Hebrew language. I a. A beginner so if someone else has greater depth of knowledge. They may not find it so deep. I find it fascinating.

Still working on itNot for the feint of heart

After researching and studying Kabbalah for over 20 years, I found this book to contain detailed technical translations of Jewish Mysticism so often unavailable to a beginning student of Hebrew. After studying 12 languages, actually 13 including Hebrew now, I found detailed alphabetical descriptions and related materials to be a great primer for the Hebrew language, especially in relation to Jewish Kabbalistic interpretation of its relativity to this religion. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who wants to study this language, although there are relatively little provisions for syntax, linguistic descriptions, etc. other than a detailed descriptions of letters relating to interpretations.I still recommend Gershom Sholem's translation for the beginner Kabbalah student, although one should really wait (as recommended by the sages) until at least their 35th birthday! It can get very depressing and mess with your heart, mind and soul, if you are not already prepared for the depth of Kabbalah study in general!The Bahir is very unique from previous Kabbalistic works that I have studied in the past, including the Sefer Yetzirah, the Zohar, etc. I had studied these for quite some time before indulging in the study of the Bahir, and I am very glad I did, because I would probably be very lost in some of the interpretations and relative inferences to what I had previously studied.In relation to previous studies, the Bahir is EXTREMELY detailed and technical in orientation and provides a deeper understanding of the values of Hebrew letters in relation to their "relative mystical meanings", especially in relation the the 10 Seiferot and their mystical significance.Aside from a few English typos, I found the book to be quiet professional in addressing details about interpretations of Kabbalistic mysticism. For a gentile lacking general knowledge of many aspects of the Jewish language, religion and culture, except for a few friends in Malibu that probably have never heard of this book, or if so, probably are barely aware of its contents, just as I am pretty unfamiliar with my Catholic religious heritage...(I flunked freshman religion at my Catholic high school!) I really learned more about the "Christian" old testament through studying the Jewish religion(s)and Kabbalah, as I found mysticism to be more intersting and closer to truth than mainstream "religions".Kaplan provides exceptional translations of this work, however I have nothing with which to compare this work, as this was my first Bahir experience. I found several of the other reviews here to be quite helpful and accurate in representing the significance of this work and translation, also contributing to my selection of this work by this specific author/translator. He does give a very detailed historical representation of progression of Kabbalah in general in the introduction.My primary interest in this book was the "technical interpretations" of more detailed aspects of mystical interpretation of the Sefer Yetzirah, the ten Seiferot, etc.

Kaplan does a great job of explaining the meanings in this text. Luminaries like him are rare. I first read his book on the Sefer Yetzirah and it had a profound impact on me. Since then, I have purchased the Bahir and some of Kaplan's other works.

I have a terrible memory and have struggling to internalize some of the concepts Ive been studying for the past three years. This book has definitely taken my studies and subsequently my mind to (not higher) the hidden level. Simply transformational. I'd have given 5 stars if only it had been longer.
