This is a review of the Kindle Edition, I suspect the regular version is better. I gave it three stars to be fair to the overall book, but for the Kindle edition it's two stars.I don't question the expertise of the people writing it, but sometimes they just lack the thoroughness of writing a fool proof book, and this is a prime example of that. I'm not comfortable with this book, because it's one of those books where you create this webpage, so I feel I am going to get stuck and not be able to proceed. That type of book has to be very thorough so that you don't get lost. I prefer the books that just show you how to do this and that, and the examples get you enthusiastic about the possibilities.I only got to page 19, and I threw my white flag up. I surrender! I can't follow along with the steps! I'm doing the most simple things. All I'm trying to do is create a page that displays the time, but it is so poorly written, and graphically lacking, that I can't figure out what to do.First, he says to replace all the code with some html code, but then he says to edit the code. What is it? Edit the code or replace it? Doesn't he know that you either start from scratch and write code or you edit existing code? This made it confusing. And since he doesn't show the end result, you cant check your code against his.The very next step I'm supposed to create a method to display the time. He has this "easy way" to create the method definition in VB.NET, by double clicking an "empty place" on the form, then the empty Page_Load method will be created. Well.. instead of creating a new method, it switches to code view, and messed up my html tag.I tried again and again. Ok, no problem just look at his example code right? Nope. So you have to figure that out on your own. That's not what I bought the book for. I can't imagine doing something complicated in this.It would be nice if he included sample code so I can verify against it.At best I think they went through the motions on the easy things, and focused more on the advanced things.If you get frustrated easy, I cannot recommend the book for you. If you are the type of person that just likes to read, and learn, this might be for you, but I don't think this is ready for Kindle due to the way the text was written.

This book is a guide learning to program ASP.NET 4, but a little bit more complete than others I've seen. There are more explanations and related documentation to learn much more than the developed example.It covers at the same time Visual Basic and C#. I'm only interested in the latter, but both are covered with the same level of deepth.It is not a book focused on people learning to program, you need to provide yourself some solutions and know the basics on programming and on Web programming

HORRIBLE!!This textbook is horrible. Period. Their "Who should read this book" section says "This book is aimed at beginners"...They must have their own definition of "beginners" if second year Deans List programming students, and instructors with years of private sector experience have a hard time deciphering their patchwork instructions and examples. Every other example is an exercise in patience and googling skills to try and figure out what step they left out. If you are making a book for "beginners" then completely skipping 2, 3, or 4 steps in a "step by step" example isn't very helpful.At this very moment, 3 of the top students in our class are sitting with the instructor, 45 minutes after the end of class, trying to figure out what key step was omitted by these incompetent authors... Just as we have done, every chapter since Chapter 4...

The organization is questionable and the content doesn't seem properly focused on the right level of developer. The decision to put vb and c# in one book was a failure. I am using this for a class I am teaching only because it was available at the university digital library. I am very disappointed that I cannot use the book I had chosen which was Murach's asp.net 4 in C#.

Content is excellent, but the quality of the re-printed pages was awful. The ink used was terrible (too light)...you can barely read the pages and pages were printed incorrectly.

ProsThis is an excellent book. The authors have a gifted style for explaining the material from the elementary, to the most functional, and through to advanced levels. They make it seem simple, easy, and clear.I really like the way they use both C# and Visual Basic. That is very helpful to most programmers.The examples in this book are all straight forward and relevant. They include several examples that are used in almost every website built. Whether it’s for the enterprise or your sister’s wedding, you can go through this book and be a competent web developer.ConsThe book uses Visual Studio 2010. There have been several upgrades to the software so there are a few important topics that aren’t discussed such as bootstrap and some of the latest features but all the code in the book runs in the latest version of Visual Studio. Some of the menus look a little different but are easily understood from the descriptions in the book.ConclusionThis book is highly recommended and I hope the authors will write a new book based on the latest development technologies.Final thoughtI hate to sound stuffy but if there is a new edition the name of the book’s primary example project should be reconsidered. Dorknozzle makes it sound as though they are not serious about the work. Additionally, an online definition is really disparaging. It is good to have such a unique name so it can be easily located on the web but maybe something more practical.
